So about those armor pieces that take up multiple slots...

you know, the ones that have your head always facing where your torso is?

Im pretty sure that rhe design is based of historically similar designs where the helmet was fixed to the breastplate.

some historical armor was like that OP. for instance jousting armor occasionally had a fixed helm, and many helmets have their neckguard built into the helm itself. while historical armor was never that bulky, the amount of metal strapped to you generally hinders movement a lot. theirs a reason why 'half-swording' (using your off-hand to guide the blade into the slits of a suit of armor by grabbing the blade at it's midpoint) and using the blade of the sword as a grip for a make-shift crossguard hammer became a thing.
