Triple Triad Plus Rule

The Plus Rule makes sense to me, and I've seen various online explanations that fit with how I understand it. But in play against King Elmer, it seems to be rather erratic.

Example 1 -

The Dodo card is in the bottom right-hand corner, the Godbert Manderville card is directly above it, and the Cactuar card is played in the center of the board (i.e. to the immediate left of the Manderville card). These are the only cards on the board. The total of the cards on the left side of the Manderville card is 9. And the total of the cards on the bottom side of the Manderville card is 9. The Plus rule doesn't kick in.

Example 2 -

The three cards involved this time are the Manderville card in the center, the Garuda card in the center right spot, and the Bahamut card in the bottom right corner. The total for the Manderville and Garuda cards is 13. And the total for the Garuda and Bahamut card is 10. The Plus rule *does* kick in this time.

According to my understanding of the rule, it should have applied in example 1, but did not. And it shouldn't have applied in example 2, but did. What am I misunderstanding?

When you place the card down, that card must be touching any two sides of any OTHER cards that add up to the same number. It won't count on any other card. In your first example, you did not flip any cards because you placed down the Cactuar... Not only was the Cactuar only touching one card when you placed it down, but the other side that added to 9 was on Godbert, not the Cactuar. If, for example, you were the one to place down Godbert in that same exact scenario (with the Dodo and the Cactuar already on the board), you WOULD get the flip.

However... having 'setups' like this isn't completely useless. Once the plus rule kicks into effect, the 'combo' effect will take into account the cards that are already on the board, which is why you can get multiple flips after that first plus rule takes effect. Thus, you COULD trigger a flip with that Godbert later in the 'game'.

Also, the cap on a card is 10... no matter what. A = 10, btw, in case you were wondering. You can also confirm this via the ascension rule. So, even though one side technically adds to 10 and the other adds to 13, they both actually add to 10... thus, you get the flip...

I've been playing King Elmer here and since the Gold Saucer opened up, still haven't gotten Bahamut. I get so annoyed after around 3 sessions.. it's like seriously?

You got me startled here. I agree on the ascension rule and 10 being the max (which is sad btw ^^), but for the Plus rule are you 100% positive amounting to 10 to both sides will get the flip ?

I cannot try right now but I will have a check test, maybe I played Plus matches wrong from the start xD

Total number beyond 10 still counts for the plus rule. Ascension is a different beast.

The card you place must be the one generating the two equal sum sides on two of its sides. It doesn't count if you place a third card down that creates a sum on one side that matches on a sum on the side of a second card. In your first example you placed the cactuar down which doesn't trigger the plus rule because it only generates a sum on one of its sides. Had the cactuar and dodo been present and you placed the Godbert card that would have triggered the plus rule.

Example 2 I think the sums cap at 10. At least that's what's happens in my games.

The max for a given side of a card is 10, but the Plus rule is adding two such cards. Place an A next to another A and the Plus rule will see the 20. If they maxed the sum at the same level as the individual pieces, then then you could nearly always manage a 10 (or higher) to match any other 10 (or higher). The plus rule would kick in almost every time there are two cards next to the one you play.
