Can Excalibur/Aegis be obtained separately?

There is no paladin to ask about this on my server and paladin relic is a special case. I've completed my summoner's Apocalypse and I can't really compare it to paladin relic because summoner book is -ONE- item while paladin has -TWO-. I've forgotten to soulglaze my shield which is now at 0/2000 Light, while the sword has 1400/2000 Light.

If there's a guide that clearly states that Excalibur and Aegis can be obtained separately without having to do the Final Zodiac quest twice, I'd appreciate the link for it. I'd like to upgrade my sword when it hits 2000 points and then continue farming Light for the shield, and upgrade later. Otherwise, I don't want to make the mistake of using up the quest items for just the sword.

They have to be upgraded together. The option to upgrade them is upgrade Curtana and Holy Shield, rather than upgrading separately like in previous steps.

There are separate options to enhance Curtana and Holy Shield, just like for soulglazing, so obviously you can upgrade them separately. If Zodiac Glass is removed when you upgrade Curtana, get another one from Drake.

Edit: I'm sure if they were supposed to be enhanced together, they would be soulglazed together too.

The Gladiator above says otherwise. The Nexus versions can be upgraded separately, but I was asking about the latest quests to upgrade (Excalibur and Aegis, not Curtana and Holy Shield).

The first reply is correct. Cannot change the nexus into zodiac without having both sword and shield.

Well, since next stage is Nexus I kinda assumed you meant that by upgrade, my mistake.

At the end of each stage, you have to have both Curtana and Holy Shield upgraded in order to get the next stage, although you can raise them separately for Animus (books are split between them), Novus (53/22 materia split), and Nexus (2000 light to raise both together, but 4000 total if you DON'T raise them together at all). The last stage (for now) doesn't seem to even require that you have your Nexus equipped to get any of the items, and you already have to at least have both at full light just to get Nexus and get to that point.

How could you even make that assumption when the thread title explicitly mentions Excalibur and Aegis? o.O

@OP - yeah you have to upgrade both at the same time from what I remember.

Happens most of the time lately it seems >.< There must be some Eye-Brain connection failure happening...

Only if it's your first relic. If it isn't your first you can upgrade the to different stages separately. Someone in my FC has a Holy Shield Novus and just got their Curtana Animus after getting the Holy Shield Novus.

The only points you need to have both at the same stage is the upgrade to Atma and the Zodiac upgrade.
