Lag and Connectivity Issues

Hi,

I've been playing ARR for about 3 weeks now and haven't experienced any lag (my connection is wired and strong), until last week around the same time as the patch and DDOS attacks. I'm now suffering with bad lag which makes it extremely difficult to play the game. There is often a 5-10 second delay on simple actions, such as talking to NPC's etc.

Also I'm playing on PS3.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I have found this to be the case ever since the new software update for the ps3 it self the last hour i have been disconnected about 7 times after a strech of lag. Before the software update i only had a bit of lag with the new patch.

I just started having issues last night and they have continued well into today. I'm dropping packets on 1-3 of Squares servers at any given time. Someone's having an issue in their backbone servers. I've even tried using a VPN to reroute my connection, but I still drop on the same servers (although they are different IPs). I suggest sending in a support ticket after following these steps to identify the trouble servers http://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/commen..._from_latency/. I sent my ticket in and haven't heard a thing from them. Maybe if we get enough voices calling out, we'll get a confirmation that there is a problem and they are looking into it.

Edit: Your PS3 will still go through the same servers that a computer would simply because you're using that connection. Testing the above steps on a computer will provide the answers to the problem servers, causing the lag on your PS3.

Just a minor correction to the reddit post--please don't blindly test against the IP listed at the arrstatus page for your sever.

Look closely at the list. You will see multiple servers listing the same IP address. Each world has a bank of IP's it uses, and apparently some of them overlap. There's a pretty good chance you are using a different IP than the one listed there. I am now using .30, was using .25 back before they revamped their networks...and Midgard lists as .28 (some are using that IP, but not all of us).

It is best if you pull the IP your client actually uses while logged fully into the game. This can be done by various ways. If on PC, you can open a DOS prompt and run Netstat, or you can run resmon from the run/search box and expand the network/tcp sections to see what IP is being used by ffxiv. For consoles, if you are using a router you may have a page in the router's admin pages that displays current connections. You will be looking for one starting with 199 for the Canadian servers while you are logged fully into the game.

Alternatively, you can test against the lobby servers themselves. There are 3 URL's registered for them:

neolobby02.ffxiv.com (199.91.189.74)
neolobby04.ffxiv.com (199.91.189.93)
neolobby06.ffxiv.com (199.91.189.106)

Note they aren't using the friendlier Aether, Primal, or Chaos names... but those are the registered DNS names for their IP's. If you check your connections while on the Character Select screen, you should see you are using one of those 3 if using the servers in Canada (The JP lobbies use odd numbers in their names, and start with 124).

Just a heads up from a quick look at my ISP's network, things are sort of "tits-up" for TWC users in the Southeast (as well as several other areas). Getting ping spikes of up to +200 over the norm in the Carolinas and Georgia while still in TWC's network segments (some even intermittently timed out when pinged directly--that's periodic delayed responses of over 2 seconds, a sign of high congestion). Otherwise, the cogentco routing out of Atlanta that ultimately hits Albany before going into Montreal is pretty stable. It's the more localized TWC segments that are flaking out for me at the moment.

It can also be obtained from the Networks tab of Resource Monitor (Task manager > Performance tab)

Okay thanks for the advice, I'll try what you've suggested and see if it helps. I'll post my results on here.
