Paladin - Novus to Nexus

So for the Nexus chain, if anyone can answer this, do I need to have fully finished Novus'ing BOTH Curtana and Holy Shield before I can start the Nexus quest?

Yeah, you do.

The quest was red when I went to novus my shield (did my sword first), and became gold immediately after equiping the shield.

Yes, and an important reminder is that you can get lights on Sword and Shield at the same time.

Yep. Happened every time so far with both equipped.

I recently complete my Sword and need to get Alexandrite for my shield. Does anyone know if I can just have the Novus Sword equipped to farm Alexandrite from Fates?

Novus works for Fate alex. But it's a 1% drop rate. You are much better off doing hunts or even dungeons.
