I recall in FFXI their enmity system had this effect. Basically if a DPS stole hate, they might get hit once or twice, and lose it once taking a certain amount of damage.
They also has Volatile and Cumulative enmity.
I get the impression that this game doesn't have a feature where taking damage lowers threat, but I don't know if that's absolute.

what you saw from FFXI was probably DPS not doing actions, thus losing enmity from enmity decay plus tank trying to pull hate back with abilities. -

If DPS continue to smash face of mob, they will keep hate. If DPS stop smash for 3-5 secs while tank try to take hate back, happy times. If not, like most of the time, the DRG usually ends up tanking that mob, then it's a death race and the DPS blames the tank.

Taking damage does not lower enmity.
You can test this yourself by using the skill 'Provoke" on an enemy and having a friend "Provoke" as well. Provoke only generates 1 point of enmity and can easily be lost by simply having another party member buff themselves.
The only way to 'lose' enmity is to die... where you restart to 0 (and hence your only hope of regaining the enmity back is the skill "provoke").
There is however... some weird WS mechanic on certain monsters. Let's say you use provoke on an enemy that's performing an instant weaponskill with no timer (such as a simple cleave attack). Even though your highest on the enmity list during their WS initiation time, their previous target is already marked to receive the attack. Once this attack is done, only then will the enemy come back to you. It's somewhat annoying when this happens and the only way to stop this is to interrupt the enemy via stun/silence. -

Like I said, pretty sure that didn't exist.... though that would make things a tad more interesting if it did. I assumed if it did exist, it was such a small adjustment that it rarely came to be an issue.

Many abilities were able to spike V. enmity very high quickly, but not many could really spike C. enmity outside of certain debuffs or cure cheating. I don't remember the specifics behind damage <> enmity, but it was rather inefficient compared to debuffs and cure cheating when it came to end-game level events (I really loved tanking as RDM/NIN, haha).Quote:

There are specific fight mechanics that drop your enmity to 0 (good example is Mog EX; the tank moogles will both drop enmity on their current target after one of the combo attacks; some mechanics like this drop enmity on all targets to 0 whereas others will just drop it from specific targets, like current or top 2), and there are some abilities for other class/jobs that drop enmity (Shroud of Saints for CNJ/WHM and Elusive Jump for DRG both cut current enmity in half).Quote:
