Most of us played Final Fantasy XI and other SE titles, and I think that experience informs a lot of our suggestions. I think SE needs to stop looking at FFXI, however, and decide what would be the most fun - first and foremost - before just resorting to what's tried and true.

SE hasn't had more than 500k subs in years. That number is shrinking rapidly (2 server merges in 1 year).
They should keep certain aspects to make it a FF MMO (flexibility to change jobs, great world, story, and art direction, chocobos, airships, world in danger, etc.).
They should learn from what they've done and what everyone else has done, and produce a game that will appeal to a wide audience.
Especially since most of the better FF games are older, and almost no one holds FF13 in the same regard as FF6, FF7, etc. -

The game is a final fantasy game if it goes away from that and just does mainstream mmo.. they should take the final fantasy off it.
With that the game should be made for FF fans first with the general mmo playerbase as the 2nd target. Not saying they shouldn't try to get both at the same time though. -

Many of the above are features which Final Fantasy XI is a stranger to. Keeping FF blinders on will not help make this an amazing game, but taking them off can still keep it a Final Fantasy game, and also an amazing MMO. -
