Is it just me, or does this game try so hard to immerse you in the world that there's too much to keep track of? Time in this game is measured by bells.. How long is a bell? is it a minute? and hour? a day!? Distance in this game is measured in Yalms, how long is a yalm in relative terms? A quick search on the wiki defines a yalm as 3 fulms.. What the hell is a "fulm"!? The lore is a bit over-complicated if you ask me, I can barely read the sign posts in the game, or even the name of the map I'm on because the Erozean handwriting is so insane it makes words hardly legible. All that aside, I love the game and I know this is but a small speed bump on the greater scheme of things, but sometimes less is more.

That wiki article is right. FFXIV is using the old nautical timing system where the ship's bell would mark the hour. The game also uses onze, ponze, and tonze for ounce, pound and ton.
