Story is king! That is what I always hear from my teachers when it comes to creative work. A good story lets the aspects that are smaller, like lore, be bad and forgiven by the audience. A bad story won't.
A good example of this is Bozja. Most people can agree that the Bozjan story was a mess of ideas with little narrative coherence. Important bits were hidden under logs that you had to go out of your way to find. It shifted focus between characters and their importance, an example being the blades which were supposed to be the big elite unit with whom you would work to win this war, but later were treated as plot devices for Misija to begin her villain arc and in the end, they got enthralled by the Queen and turned into monsters.
If this was the only story they did I guess it would have turned out better, working together with these soldiers that are almost as strong as you and become your comrades in arms. Having each quest be a mission with them, learn more about why and who are they fighting for and get a better grasp on them. Doing that only to lose them to an Eikon's influence, a thing you yourself are immune. Up until that point you have fought alongside them, that you completely forgot their weakness to the Primals, only to have an instant realisation of just how much danger they are in, unable to save them, you see your friends be turned into beasts that you have to put down, their being corrupted and twisted that they aren't even recognisable anymore. Their names would have meant something and those fights would have been more heavier for our WOL. Not to say that we would also have a much bigger reason to want to take Misija and the imperials down for what they did, and the plot would move nicely into wanting to find a cure so no one has to share your late comrade's fate.
But that is what could have been, instead, we spend little time with them, learn next to nothing from the story and then are supposed to feel anything while they are being enthralled. The story shifts focus from what's important to the bunny with a sugar rush and the Au'Ra crushing on Cid.
By doing this SE accentuated the bad story as an incomplete mess that in the end was a misconception by some fake/lazy scholars. But you know what we could have done? ASK THE HROTHGAR FROM THE RESISTANCE! The easiest way to dump lore on a person is by having 2 characters talk. Using my idea from above, our WOL could have talked to one of the blades who might have been a scholar who learned about the old days and would have told us more about it.
Lore is easy, the easiest thing ever. If you would allow me a food metaphor: The story is the cupcake, the characters are the icing and the lore is the Sprinkles. They can add some flavour but if the story is not good then neither the characters nor the lore would save it.
I wrote the answer to this in another thread.
Felt more appropriate there. Since it pertains to Hrothgar AND Viera lore and how it's handled.
So. Yeah. Here's hoping better content with and for Hrothgals.
Being in 2023 and having the fan fest approaching. The one in June is the closest. Do you think we might see them then or would we have to wait for 8.0?
Since it is rather weird that they went into total silence about the subject of female Hrothgar after the live letter from January 2022.
They already confirmed them, so saying nothing about their progress is rather strange since we all know that they are coming.
They did say that they have settled on 2 designs for them so if that is the case, why not show it? Why not show 1 of the designs as concept art? This will help people visualise them better as well as temper our expectations.
I can understand that a concept art of them would not be as impactful as a trailer, but then they could just add a masked NPC that would represent them, kind of how Yugiri was added. This way we would at least get a grasp of their height and body.
Or if I could have a small indulgence. Then make the male Hrothgar the centre of the next Valentione. And put the female Hrothgar on the art banner for the event with their face concealed. The whole thing might be around helping the Male Hrothgar ask the female Hrothgar on a date, him messing up a lot until he is genuine and asks her outright. But to keep the "OwO, No spoilers" around the female Hrothgar, every time the WOL would be around she would have "Just left" or "I couldn't find her" and even when we see her, from the place we are spying, somehow a random object would be placed in such a fashion that we would conveniently not see her. I think that might be a funny and cute scenario.
And would give us our first Male Hrothgar NPC for an event. Come on SE, the bun boys have 2 and they have been released for only 1 year while Male Hrothgar have none!
I'm fairly certain they're reserving Hrothgals for a fanfest, the question being which one - the US one, because they're the loudest audience, or the JP one for being the most modest.
On one hand, male Hroths were revealed in the latter because they knew how much of a riot the western playerbase would've made at showing burly catmen instead of bunny boys, but this time there's no such controversy so Hrothgals, the "new race," should be front and center to generate hype....
On the other hand, Hrothgars, as a race, have been treated like the unwanted child so I wouldn't be surprised if they're presented as little more than a footnote in the character graphic updates panel
The more time I spend speculating WHEN the reveal will be, the worse the wait becomes.
Personally I say just wait, it will happen when it happens.
I think they will be shown at US fanfest. Considering they usually save the job reveals for EU/JP. But who knows with how everything has been latley. like Zan is stating it will happen when it does but we do have official confirmation they are coming just a matter of when.
You have my support!
AND my AXE!
NA always gets the barest bones of announcements since we go first ;-;
if I had to guess
NA -> xpac name, raid titlecard, 24 man raid titlecard, concept art for locals, tshirt hint for new job #1
EU -> hrothgals, 2 locales revealed, job #1 reveal, tshirt hint for new job #2
JP -> full trailer, full locales preview, 2nd job reveal
I had to rewatch the Shadowbringers trailer and Holy Moly. Makes me wonder when they release the female Hrothgars if they will be in the trailer or just billed as a stand in. Makes me sad. Hopefully they turn out well, cause I am on the fence for trading in the scales if they do.
Man, for being the one who wanted a playable beast race added to the game, Yoshi (and the dev team overall) really treats Hrothgar as an afterthought. :/
I hope you're right. But, judging from their track record with how they treat Hrothgar, I still harbor a healthy amount of skepticism. I'm still relatively hopeful that female Hrothgar will make the situation better for the race overall, but we will have to wait and see.
That pun made me giggle, by the way.
Yoshi-P has mentioned in the past that the trailers are made many months before they're done with the idea on where the expansion is fully going. That's why pretty much every expansion has contained events that have not happened in the game, they're proofs of concept, in a sense.
Ok, great...
...aaaaaaaaaaaand that was just Shadowbringers alone. They've since had plenty of chances since, haven't they?
Because that's what I'm getting at: Viera have had a presence, Obese Miqo'te have had some too, even Male Roegadyn have some with the 1.0 trailer. And yet Hrothgar haven't even had a mention.
I'll also argue that they had both races done, and that the opening sequence could have also included a Hrothgar in 3D rendering as a way to reveal the race. The final trailer is always presented along the final few bits of relevant information. They could have found a way to introduce one somewhere, but they didn't. "They hadn't introduced Hrothgar yet", that's... literally no excuse :T plus, they had already accidentally leaked the race with the FR translation and even hinted at it with Yoshida's shirt the event before. People knew there was something "catty" going on. And it's perfectly fine to display something strange and leonine on the trailer as the reveal, and then elaborate further down on the panel.
It's been almost 2 years since male viera dropped with not a peep about femgars. As much as I want them to be added I personally believe they won't.
It's been two lunar years :^)
When did they announce that? Initially the plan was no hats period, then staff worked on the initial backlog of compatible things, now we get things that fall into same compatible checkboxes as the initial wave (ie. hats that completely obscure hair + the continued glasses/circlets/headbands/etc). I don't recall them saying they'd give us hats.
Sorry but this isn't correct. As already pointed out the female Hrothgars were announced right after the reveal of male Viera. We were told essentially "they're coming, you'll get them once they are done". Obviously this leaves the door open for them to arrive literally at any time. Could be 6.5, could be 7.0, they'll arrive when they arrive.
Since then we also received an update in February of 2022. It was revealed that the art team had made a variety of concept artwork and this had been narrowed down to two choices. Unless I've missed something we haven't gotten any updates since then nor seen any of this artwork, which is obviously disappointing, but we do know they've been working on them.
Around the same time as this little progress update we also found out about the planned update to graphics that will be around 7.0 and as much as I hate the idea of waiting until the next expansion it would make the most sense when you consider work load for female Hrothgar to be delayed until this update. That way the team doesn't have to spend time on the graphics for female Hrothgar only to right away turn around and make an updated version.
That's generally how progression works yes. When moving towads something it doesn't matter how much or how little progress is made, you're almost to the destination. So in 15 months it will almost be 24 months. In 14 months 2 weeks and 17 days it will almost be 24 months. Hence the use of the term "almost".
