This is so helpful in visualising what steps to take for the colors! Thank you! I'm going to try and replicate the steps to get Rolanberry Red once my plants come up.

Hm interesting.
I got too friends that got cork brown and then fed their birds berries. The first person fed it only once for 1 feather msg, while the other person fed it for 3 feather msg. Yet both got the same result, which is coral pink. It seems the number of feather msg doesn't matter, and only the first proc counts...
If I'm right in how this works, you went from ~25/36/28 to ~14/35/61 because the Valfruit hit only the blue color, raising it a fair bit. You probably went from something like 20/35/30 to 20/35/60. You need to lower the blue again, but you also need to raise that red. The pineapple, if you're lucky, will hit primarily the red color, giving you something like 50/35/60. If it hits green, or both, you could wind up with 50/65/60 or 20/65/60 or anything inbetween. You could wind up with: Shadow Blue (++red +green), Woad Blue (+red, +green), Morbol Green (just +green), or Grape Purple (just +red). Other colors are possible too, I guess, but I don't know how much a single fruit can raise/lower colors.
EDIT: The problem, as I said elsewhere, is that Soot Black is only the fourth-darkest color in the game. It's just the most balanced dark color. There's a red (Kobold Brown), green (Deepwood Green), and blue (Ink Blue) darker than it. Going from one of them to black is risky and random.
I would maybe try adding a few pineapples to reduce blue values.
I recently just got my experimental bird from Blood Red > Dalamud Red, but I had started the process with only Apples, and then 3 berries with 1 new feather message got me to Dalamud.
And from other information I've seen, there is another red color (Rolanberry Red) between Dalamud Red and Regal Purple that you can get if you were to use berries on Dalamud Red, or apples on Regal Purple.
Hey guys, been monitoring these threads for awhile, but I think I've reached the point where I need some advice, especially when regarding the value system. Like many others I'm trying to achieve Soot Black, here's all of my data since the start.
I'm gonna post it in three parts due to post limits.

15 apple
Dalamud Red
(I start to take notice of feather alert here)

<no color> No change? Possible glitch? Possibly arrived a tad bit early but no movie occurred and there was no timer. Chocobo wasn't on display either as another fc member stored it's own so it switched out of the preview. My last fruit also may have given no feather change notice and I had just forgotten, but I don't believe that to be the case.
Stable: Fair
5 apple
2 pears
Feather alert
11 pears
2 apple
1 pear
1 apple
Deepwood Green
Soon after the next part, I discovered someone had achieved Soot Black by giving their Deepwood Green Chocobo a Valfruit, so a good chunk of fruit were thus wasted
Despite removing the chocobo and stopping the change in color, are the values of each fruit removed as well?
REMOVED

2 pears
Feather alert
1 apple (feather alert disappears!?)
1 apple (still no alert)
3 apple (no alert)

Any advice for my next move for Soot Black?
Sounds like your 2 stages behind me.
8th stage Finished.
Started as Rolanberry Red, Fed 1 Berries and received "New Feathers" message, end result.... Regal Purple. ugh.
My Old Post has been updated with this. I will be starting next stage immediately. Going to continue with Berries, see if I hit this loop other people have. Hope I get something different than the loop since I'm coming from the maxed red side.
Hey, guys, is this useful? https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing Spent some time doing it today while I was a bit bored...
I got Snow White after feeding just 15 Plums
Been trying to figure out a pattern myself, so far, not much.
Downloaded a copy, but I noticed you are using "old" color codes, so I am going to change my copy to the codes I have updated posted in my research post.
Once I am done with that I will play with yours and see if the numbers make any sense.
Question:
Can you explain your "theory" behind this spreadsheet? Or it is just a calculator?
Ah, sorry, wasn't aware the colour codes had changed. :o I just copy/pasted the numbers from someone else's sheet.
EDIT: If anyone knows how I can allow people to use the drop down menus WITHOUT allowing them to change the colour of them, or remove the drop down menus altogether, I'd appreciate it. xD
8th Stage Started.
Took 9 Berries to get a new feathers message. Hopefully I avoided the loop. I'm think I'll get Grape or Currant Purple.
Think I saw another person going up the Apple route. If anyone else goes nothing but Apples, please go to Pears after you cap Apples at Blood Red. I went Berries after and it seems Angelusdemonus might be a couple stages behind me on the same route. Which is fine, it needs confirming; but we don't need 3 people doing it unless you're going for a color along the way. Apples to max then Pears still need to be mapped out.
I know someone in the other "Thread" where people still go by fruit counts (><.. /sigh) landed on Wine Red and it looks nice. I want someone to find a legit way to it. I think Rust Red and maybe Wine Red will be pears after apples.
Old post with my Apple>Berries route.
Saw a post yesterday and forgot to copy it, someone went from blood red into deeper red using 70+ apples.
This does agree with the trend I am seeing from apples, as you go deeper into the color scale, the more apple it requires. Currently I have stopped at blood red (30+ apples) and I do not have the supply to keep doing this route if the next jump is 70+ apples.
On the side note, am going to color my chocobo to Royal Blue, with our "new feather" approach, but using the fruit combo from the old spreadsheet and try to discover the path, if it exists.
That's good to know; glad someone was more crazy than me. Do you know which color they hit? Getting tired of purple real fast; but I still want to go Berries for 1 more stage and then start Pears. After that I may go and try to replicate the 70+apples since I have free reign over a garden.
Well, that's when I would have kept using pears even after going back to Sunset Orange. But that's just me. With AttacKat's info now, mapping apples > pears moved lower on my list of things to do. I want to confirm that high Red color and I still want to find Wine Red. I feel like it may be pears after Dalamud Red or off this high red color w/e it is.
Geh. Just thought about it. Since there is a high red color that means my results after Blood Red may be skewed since i fed 40+ apples in an attempt to hit the next red tier, gave up, and then started the Berries.
Current Color: Royal blue (34/42/96)
I'm trying to get soot black. So far I've been feeding a lot of berries and some pears/apples and got royal blue.
I fed 25 berries, 7 pears and 7 apples now but still didn't get a message that the feathers will change. Is this because the R/G values can't decrease any further? Or am I missing something?
I'm thinking about feeding pineapples to decrease blue and increasing red/green to get them around the same level and then decrease all three values equally.
So what would be the process to bring from desert yellow to soot black
just randomly fed all 3 darkening fruits/berries and ended up with pumpkin orange.
Pumpkin Orange > 6 pears with 6 feather messages > Coeurl Yellow.
Coeurl Yellow > 7 doman plums with 5 giving feather message > Apple Green.
We have no definite route to Soot Black yet. In the other thread (that's pure chaos compared to this one), they're basically just feeding all deepening fruits to hit one of the darker colors and then feeding single fruits hoping to land on Black. Some of us on this thread are more organized and are trying to map out a way. But, its' slow going because we're NOT throwing all kinds of random fruits at our chocobos in a single 6 hour period.
I gotcha; it's good to know at least. I just planted 2 Grade3Shroud Apples earlier so I'll probably have enough to try it with the 36 I already have. But if you end up doing it, I'll go try to find Wine Red after my foray into purples and maybe black in a couple days.
PROVIDING RESOURCES - Diabolos
I haven't noticed many people from Diabolos posting here, but I'm willing to give out some free Grade 3 Shroud Soils to anyone doing this research. I don't have a huge stockpile, but I try to hit that node every hour I'm online, so I can get some. Tips appreciated but not expected. =)
Message Oliver Beelzie in game or let me know here.
Stipulations: Be reasonable. I'm not going to give you a full stack of 99 soils for free! xD
Literally just a calculator. :) Saves people trying to look up colour codes and does it for you, and figures the difference. Just there to save time, really! It's based on the general theory of RGB standard being used and leaves the figuring out of exactly how much of each fruit to the individual, given that there seems to be a fair amount of RNG involved.
I've followed along with the apple testing done in this thread and experienced the same results. Fed nothing but apples until I got to blood red (stopped feeding apples each time I got the new feather message). I then fed berries until I received the new feather message and now I have dalamud red. My end goal is wine red, but it doesn't seem like anyone has achieved this color with accurate testing.
I think if anyone is able to translate this page
http://jp.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodest...995.1375390680
more accurately than google translate we might be able to figure it out. It looks like the guy went from rolanberry red to wine red. Has anyone tried feeding pears to a rolanberry red choco?
I have also found out that the fruit seeds when planted with different adjacent plants will also occasionally cross bread into Gysahl Green seeds - 3 times now I have gotten a cross breed of 12 seeds each with my shroud soil.
and while you get 36 fruit with grade 3 shroud topsoil on the dye fruits, the han lemons only give 2 :(
Good Job. I glad we got some work confirmed. :) I personally continued on with Berries from Rolanberry. If I had to take an educated guess, following the same route I did, Wine Red would probably be pears started from Dalamud Red. Or, Wine Red would be branched off of this high lvl Red that hasn't been confirmed yet. From the map/planner, if you start pears from Rolanberry it seems you can get Grape Purple. I'm not saying it's not possible from Rolanberry, but I feel like it's too much of a Violet color. As far as I know, no one in this thread has done pears off of a red from the same route yet. So you are welcome to try.
edit: More theorizing.. pears for a step or two off of Dalamud/Rolanberry. Then maybe try apples again to hit Wine.
With the unknown RNG at work, it's really just guesswork till someone finds it.
Does anyone know how to get to Iris Purple from Colibri Pink?
