No idea never parsed this method or even used it to know. I actually would never use the double flare UI3 trick, not before the patch and not after. I won't help give SE another reason to break the UI 3 ticks. I'm against using it but that is just my opinion. We all know SE think of this as a glitch/bug, so no thanks don't want to ever see another UI 3 "fix" or flare nerf just because of something SE does not like.

You have to be careful with transpose/flare and low MS. You might find yourself stuck in astral fire 3 after your transpose failed because you were mashing it during your flare cast. heh

Has happened to me multiple times. I just wish they'd standardize the freaking MP regen system for, at the very least, BLMs. Having to wait 2-3 seconds after I enter umbral ice 3 and sometimes having no wait time at all really screws with you.

At times I wish to hammer this simple solution home until it sticks...

Undo the UI3 change.
Give Flare a 5-10s recast.
Make Swiftcast reset the cooldown of all BLM damaging abilities.
Separate the mana regen and cast time reduction effects into 2 parts. Mana regen ticks as before the fix. But the cast time reduction is a single stack buff that refreshes when UI3 refreshes, and is lost when a Fire element spell is "successfully cast".

Now, you cant double flare from UI3, you cant double flare from UI1, you can still double flare from swiftcast... so down from every 12 sec to once a minute.

Also, you can fast-cast 1 Fire spell going out of UI3. If you fail to cast it, tough luck, cast another B1 and try again.

BUT... Mana ticks will work like before. We can still save the fluidity of the Pre-2.1 BLM rotation!

After Transpose, you wait until the first mana tick and cast Fire 3. This takes about about 3.5s (since you're in UI1 not UI3), which means that you'll get a second tick during casting. You should then have enough mana to cast two Fire 2 and then Flare.

With your Spell Speed of 505, Fire 3 should still take 3.27s to cast. I'm going by the Spell Speed data in The Ultimate Black Mage Resources with Damage Calculator. When in UI1, you don't lose the UI buff until the Fire 3 hits (unlike how they "fixed" UI3).

Even if you have to wait a half-second or so in order to get that second mana tick, it's still worth it. It will still give higher DPS than a B3-F3-F2 rotation, even if your Spell Speed is fast enough to save one mana tick.

The extra Fire 2 gives a very minor DPS increase to the rotation. Whether you use it or not, the average DPS is almost the same. You can freely switch between them depending on whether or not stuff is going to die soon. It's basically about timing.

SE didn't have a problem with doing flare twice. They had a problem with the spell speed from umbral going onto 2 fire casts instead of only one. People were using this trick to do 2 flares faster than hard casts. It had nothing to do with the ability to cast flare twice in a row.

Yes. From my experience, if you're already in AF3 when you cast Flare, then you can safely Transpose immediately without a problem. However, if you're in UI3 when you cast Flare and immediately Transpose, you'll be stuck in AF3.

Personally, I do it because it's slightly more DPS. As O-Deka-K posted, it's 58.8N PPS vs 58.5N PPS. In turn 4, where you're using it on 6 enemies at a time that's 352.8 PPS vs 351 PPS. When translated to actual DPS... It's still just as insigificant. I just like to know I'm squeezing out that little bit extra, though I do leave out the Fire II if the Flare will be enough damage for the kill.

That said, the Flare -> Flare rotation will actually beat out the Flare -> Fire II -> Flare rotation in the event that you're doing AOE for an entire minute; being 3 seconds shorter adds up. I don't know any current content that you should be doing an AOE rotation on that would live that long, though.

It's a bit wasteful to start out like that. Starting with Fire III -> Fire II -> Fire II -> Fire II -> Flare will give you higher DPS. It's only good as an opener, though, as the downtime required to have MP to repeat it brings the DPS down below doing a no Blizzard rotation. For Turn 4 I always do this:

Fire III -> Fire II -> Fire II -> Fire II -> Flare -> Transpose -> Flare -> Fire II -> Flare -> Transpose -> Flare -> Flare

I'll use Swiftcast on an AF3 Flare when it's off cooldown. Depending on how other DPS is doing, I'll add in Convert/Ether as needed. I try to save Convert/item cooldown for more damage on Dreadnought if I can.

I've been thinking about this. I have been doing exactly that until now, but I don't think it's right anymore.

Edit: I'm wrong. More Fire 2's is better.

I did previously say that adding more Fire 2's give you more PPS (potency per second) for 3 or more targets. That was true for every rotation that I could find or think of. However, the opener doesn't really count as a rotation, because you can't repeat it (there's no mana regeneration at all).

Since you're effectively removing the entire Umbral phase, the PPS for this opener is much higher than any normal rotation. In this case, adding more Fire 2's will actually lower the PPS:

AoE Openers, if you start from no UI/AF buff:
Flare: (260N) / 4.0 = 65N PPS
F3-Flare: (468N + 220) / 7.5 = 62.4N + 29.3 PPS <-- Best!
F3-F2-Flare: (648N + 220) / 10.5 = 61.7N + 21.0 PPS
F3-F2-F2-Flare: (828N + 220) / 13.5 = 61.3N + 16.3 PPS
F3-F2-F2-F2-Flare: (1008N + 220) / 16.5 = 61.1N + 13.3 PPS <-- Best!

Edit: The last opener is best because it is longer while still having higher PPS than the regular rotation.

Just starting with Flare may look like the best opener, but it isn't. It only catches up in PPS for 12 targets or more. However, if you're already in AF3 at the start of the fight (and have over 4s left on it), then opening with Flare would be the highest damage.

As always, Swiftcast Flare will increase this, but I generally don't open with it. Gotta give the tank a little breathing space.

It's important to consider the amount of time over which you're getting that higher PPS, though; getting higher PPS for a lesser amount of time may result in overall less potency dealt.

65N PPS for 4s, then 58.5N PPS

I heard Yoshi talks about it with both my ears in the live letter. He literally said casting flare twice using UI ticks is a bug.

SE had a problem with both casting fast Fire after switching to Astral III and also casting double flare using UI ticks. They tried to fix both but only managed to fix the fast fire cast.

Yes, you're right. I realized that what I said didn't quite add up. If the opening does more PPS than the regular rotation (in all cases), then you would want to keep it going for as long as possible.

I think it will come about the same in the end if you do the math damage wise. The major gain from Mega Int would be the massive crit if it happens & the time saved from having to hard cast two flares. In most cases you will have one flare crit. I'm crit build and I rarely crit on both flares, let alone 3 flares. So yeah, IMO Mega Int is the superior option but that does not make 3 flares any less effective.

I just hit 50 and I'm getting my BLM armour which means I'm getting flare too. How and when in the rotation is it used? Want to get it down before I start the last fight

Flare is typically not used in a single-target rotation except under very certain circumstances. The single target and AoE rotations that you should be using are listed in my OP of this thread. Flare will be used almost exclusively in your AoE rotation. Take a look at my OP and let me know if you have any questions.

If you're not swiftcasting flares or squeezing in flare+proc bombs with your last 300 MP in ST rotation, you're doing it wrong.

One person says Flare is AoE only unless it's very certain circumstances. Another says I'm doing it wrong if I don't use Flare in single target rotation. I'm still just as confused lol

Flare is kinda a subjective thing. Personally in ST rotation I just stick to Fire III > Fire spam, unless I messed it up and find myself low on MP the prolly I'll throw in the Flare.

Normally, Flare is for AoE rotation only. However that does not mean you should not use it when the opportunity present itself. Example, T5 fast conflag, when the targeted person is a healer & you have Fire III proc plus low mana go ahead and flare both Twin and the conflag after you use Fire 3 proc.

This is a very specific example and there is a reason to it. The logic behind it is that 3 DD players are damaging Conflag with you, you are also low on mana and can't spam Fire I/III but you can flare both Twin and conflag for no less than 1.2k or 1.9k if crit followed by Fire III proc which comes to grand total of 2.2k~-3.6k~. Conflag is only 10k-11k HP so you did your portion this way plus hit Twin for 1.2k at least. Nevertheless, having low mana for Conflag is bad practice, you should always aim to have enough mana before conflag without going easy on Twin just so you can save mana for Conflag. It is an art I believe and with experience it becomes natural.

Another specific example is T1. After the snakes split and your group is no longer feeding them. Ask for Foe, pop RS + Mega INT and do your normal Fire I rotation followed by double flare, if you do this correctly within 15 seconds, double flares alone can do 3.1k~-5k~ damage on a single snake.

What is everyone's thoughts on when to use swift cast in our standard rotation? I have seen some blm cast it to get blizzard 3 out faster to get back into fire. I have seen some use it for fire 1 during fire phase. Lastly, I have seen people use it to flare at the end of fire rotation (transpose seems like it would lower dd dunno).

I don't think that is needed or even possible. I used to have moments in certain fights that I would advice others to use Swiftcast but I was wrong. Each group PF/DF or static is different. The strats are different and even in the same exact fight with the same players won't always be the same. The best way to use it is based on your own judgement & experience. You will improve at it naturally, so long you are trying to time it you should be able to experience the wrong moment and the correct one for each situation. Even when you absolutely believe you got it right, someone else here on the forums will disagree. Does not mean either of you is wrong, but matter of perspective.

So yeah, all depends on what is happening on your screen and what is about to happen.

My 2 cents anyway :).

Its fantastic when used with a thunder proc at the end of your rotation. Swiftcast>flare>transpose>proc>fire3 and back at full or 90% mana with Astral 3 up, almost no GCD losses. You can use it without the proc if you know you won't need for a double flare inside your next raging strikes, but with a thunder proc is when it sees its highest gains. A Fire3 proc works decently as well, but if you see a late tick coming occasionally you have to add a scathe or blizzard after transposing to ensure you regen full mana before fire3 casts, since you transpose about a second later using a fire3 proc after a flare.

Pop mega int after two fire1 casts after raging strikes goes up, you end up with the 15 second int buff perfectly covering your double flare at the tail end of raging strikes (assuming you fire1 until RS/Int pot drops to 5-6 seconds). Otherwise it falls off moments too early. This is how you should go through all your RS rotations, imo, so long as your Int pot is off CD.

I agree, sounds about right even though I have not tested it (sub ran out -_-, will renew before raid time). Just to confirm, if you start casting the second Flare while Mega INT have 1 second left, does Flare still get affected by Mega INT? I forgot honestly if the affect happens at the start of the cast or at the end of it. Also I think if SS is high enough you can get away with using Mega INT earlier. I don't recall not being able to catch the second flare with mega INT, but again Human memory is unreliable.

If i dont use swiftcast for flare, been trying out:

from Astral fire III > Blizzard III > SC > Thunder II/III > Scathe > Fire III

you get an extra scathe in, and depending what ur mana is might get thunder III.

The latter, pop your mega int inside RS. Bonus points if you get a proc on your first fire1, since you won't lose any GCD time using your mega int pot after the proc usage. Downside is you also lose the mega int bonus being applied to said proc, its debatable if this is worth losing in order to avoid the .2 second GCD waste from using mega int pot outside of a GCD.

Its at the end of it. The trick to it is starting your first hard cast flare with about 5-6 seconds left on raging strikes/mega int pot. Starting later than that usually means not being able to SC, Convert, and Flare again before buffs run off. So you would squeeze as many fire1s/procs in as you can til your buffs are about to end, and time the double flares to both hit just before the buffs end. It is essentially the highest possible DPS utilizing your burst CDs. Reason you wait until two fire1 casts is you should wind up with mega int being the exact same duration remaining as raging strikes, meaning you can time your final hit to land in the last second of your buffs and still be fully buffed. Assuming you get at least one fire3 proc during your standard 5x fire1 rotation, you won't run out of mana early doing this. If you somehow start rotation at lower mana and wind up with 300 mana at 8-10 seconds on your buffs, you can hardcast your flare, convert, and squeeze a fire1 in before swiftcasting next flare, with an added bonus of another chance at a proc.

Here, have a video. This is without selene spell speed buff, which in 8 man content you should be waiting on for RS cycles anyways. It makes a big difference, int pot will sync up almost perfectly with RS, while without its about a second longer.

I personally swiftcast flare on cd at the end of fire i spam. Priority towards lining it up with rs and int pot for single target or aoe segments,
although i use HQ mega-ether potions to flare for aoe instead of int pots

I use Swiftcast for Fire I casts after I've used a Firestarter or Thundercloud proc since I'm stuck in a GCD. I may also use it for double Flare.

I use Convert for derp moments just as others have mentioned.

Swiftcast has many uses since it's cooldown is not that long. I mainly use it for a quick Flare (Garuda HM feathers for example) or for a double Flare (one normal flare followed by one quick flare). But I also use it for Thunder sometimes because this dot spell takes AGES lol. Or to gain a Fire 3 stack real quick when there is no free spell thanks to proc available.

Convert is 10% for derps, 10 % for game problems (you use Transform, waste the GCD and ZERO mana comes back) and 80% to enable me to use Fire 3 for a longer time.

So I've seen this pop up more and more and after some research I still can't find a definite answer. Some people have been saying that if you ignore topping off your mana from Umbral Ice during your rotation, that it's an actual DPS increase. So if you are doing the standard Fire I ---> Blizzard III ---> Thunder II ---> Fire III and get burned on RNG so that you have to use a filler to top of your mana, that it would be better to ignore getting full mana and just continue your rotation regardless.

So, to sum it up. If you get burned on RNG and have to wait an extra 2 seconds to have get your mana topped which rotation should you use...

A. Fire III ---> Fire I ---> Blizzard III ---> Thunder II ---> Blizzard I ---> Fire III

B. Fire III ---> Fire I ---> Blizzard III ---> Thunder II ---> Fire III

Rotation A will guarantee you getting full mana while Rotation B will allow you non-stop casting and less time spent out of Astral Fire III with only 2.5K Mana.

I did some testing, and it works 100% if I press it as fast as I can naturally react to a mana tick all the way up to what feels like halfway to the next mana tick. I keep a healthy stock of mega ethers hotbar'd, and this has made me very confident for pulling off pentaflares.

Fire 3 > Raging Strikes > Flare > convert > Flare > Mega Int Pot > Swiftcast > Flare > Transpose during GCD > wait for mana tick > double Flare macro gets it done.

Edit: You're probably gonna want to add in some Quelling Strikes as well. :p

Also, this all fits within a transpose cool down almost perfectly, so it effectively syncs itself up to the server ticks after the first rotation just like Transpose > Fire 3 > Fire 2 > Flare. So if you wanted an easy 2 button steady stream of flares, this will do it.

I see f3>RS>flare>convert>flare (out of mana when this flare goes off ) > MIP > swiftcast > Flare. I'm not seeing how you get that third flare...and I missing something ?

I can't be the only one who loath using combo macro as a BLM and think it is a very bad practice. Targeting and mouse over are cool but combos....no just no :(.

I use no macros at all on my BLM aside from occasionally using an Apocatastasis macro if we are running someone through Twin with somewhat low health. I find the use of macros in PvE to be terrible practice and I don't just feel this way about FFXIV macros - I felt the same way in WoW, Rift and the other MMOs I've played.

Should never rely on macros in this game as a DPS.

Yeah I said mega intelligence potion and I meant mega ether. My bad. As for using macros, wasn't aware of the negativity surrounding them. I just barely learned how they work and was having fun.

It's not really negativity. You can do just fine with them. But as a DPS, you should seek to maximize said DPS. Macros will not allow you to do so unfortunately.
