It depends on what you're looking for in an mmo. Those who play mmos don't just play them for pvp. Some play for story. Some play because they like to grind. Some play because they like the social aspects of the game. Some games have more of some aspects and less (or none) of others. The ones they have more of tell what kind of players they're trying to draw in. If you're looking for a fight with other players, don't stop here. Please, keep walking. lol SE is NOT going to focus heavily on pvp even if they put it into the game. This game caters to a different kind of player. And how well it caters to that kind of player will determine it's success.

How seriously do other mmos take pvp? Are separate fan sites/groups(a la fighting game communities) made because of it?

My son plays SWTOR and plays PVP pretty much exclusively. He is also 16. :p

If we look back at FFXI as a reference its been shown that Pvp has never really taken off in an online FF game. Both Brenner and Ballista never really took off and because in FF the jobs have clearly defined roles i think balancing those roles would be nigh on impossible for pvp content. If Se can pull it off though and attract new players good, but its one area of FF that doesnt interest me.
