Well, given the way classes => jobs work in FFXIV, it's more likely that the devs are in a position where they have no choice but to build the job around their melee weapon and make it interact with both sides of the job.
If you want an example, the link in my sig takes us to a post by Ramsey in the design thread, where he suggested Elemental Brands (this is assuming RDM is parented by the Fencer class), which can be used in conjunction with RDM's ability Magic Sword. Other examples include stuff like Runic. Or the combo system in the case of RDM involving weapon skills and magic spells (offensive & defensive). That's kind of what I mean with magic and melee complimenting each other.
The funny thing is that Dark Knights in XI also suffered from RDM's same problem, because the devs didn't sit there and say "so BLM has the standard version of Fire. How would RDM and DRK use fire magic?" and instead just copy/pasted Fire on DRK and RDM. Hence DRK's laughably pathetic selection of elemental magic.
I don't think SE would "Miss" the chance to bring DRK back.
Im not really invested in what jobs are chosen to be in the game. I dont really have a favorite or anything.
If I was going to hope Yoshi saw one of my comments and took it to heart it would be this; Please decide on either classes or jobs and remove the superfluous "difference". Just my opinion.
If it was just jobs or classes (id want them to go with the interesting classes dynamic, just without the ridiculous names like THM, PUG and MRD, if they wanted to be different could have been something like Wizard, Boxer and i dunno... just things that sounds pleasant and dont make my head hurt) Anyways, if it was just classes, they could choose any/all of the interesting jobs that have existed in their video games, or make up new ones, as long as they had a clear vision of what that class/job would do.
