Both of those examples you gave are literally examples of plot holes.
Plot hole definition: an inconsistency in the narrative or character development of a book, film, television show, etc.

Both of the examples i gave were indeed inconsistencies. We did it with the power of azem yes, aka a memory crystal of an ancient
being. That’s far different from what Graha is. The problem with the Graha thing is the fact they specifically mention it numerous times in the story and even show us what happens when he’s far away for too long. It’s an inconsistency based on what we were shown. As for the “Graha wouldn’t go out that easy” comment, you seem to forget the man was literally shot and imprisoned by Emet. He wouldn’t have a choice in dying if Emet wanted it, he’s an unsundered.You seem to just be grasping at straws.

With XIV I don't think the issue is the interruptions - I've never caught up to current content, and I've seen many issues with how the game tells it's story.
The issue being that XIV pretty much always tells. The amount of dialogue that serves little purpose and you will never remember is ASTOUNDING. There are so many plot points that there's no way I can keep track of what's going on.

Gee I wonder how Tataru's Summoner training is going, since Square made it a mandatory quest in the MSQ and then abruptly forgot about it for 3 whole expansions....

So much of the MSQ, especially in ARR, could be relegated to side quests, but I digress. It's not *bad* content, it just gets excessive.

I would say ARR is the problem... buuut you did say that HW just felt like 'more of the same' to you. So that tells me that ARR clearly isn't your issue.. no, sounds more to me like FFXIV's story, the manner of storytelling, just isn't for you. Which is fine.

Only issue I somewhat have with your take is that you automatically label FFXIV's story as 'bad' just because it isn't to your taste, like.. you honestly think thousands upon thousands are just blowing smoke when they say things like HW and ShB are amazing?

funnily enough, i rewatched spirits within 3 years ago and actually quite enjoyed it. not movie of the year quality, but not nearly as bad as i remembered it. its main problem isn't that its a bad movie, it's problem is that its just not what people expect thinking of final fantasy. imagine you would go watch a new avengers movie and after entering the theater you realize you now have to sit through a 3 hour hystorical retelling of life in feudal japan during the warring states period. it may be a perfectly fine movie, good even, but you would still feel ripped off because its not avengers even if oda nobunaga decided to dress up as captain america in the final 5 minutes.


on topic though, best wishes to the op, hope you find something that makes you happy. one point of advice though. you don't need to like the story, if you love other things its perfectly fine to just power through once and than do other stuff you actually find fun.

that aside though, the problem with skipping story during arr is that the story builds up over time, people talk about retcons and all but really, while the definition of that is somewhat wonky a lot of time its actually pretty reasonable stuff that comes up later was just unclear (at least to us) early on and actually does make thematic sense. for example people speculated on the nature of primals since arr came out, lots of people coming really close to the truth with just the information we had, yet the moment we learned more and new things about primals people started screaming "retcon" like square just rewrote world war 2 documents.

all in all no, i don't think the story in ff14 is the best thing ever written, i do however believe that one simply misses a lot of the finer details by skipping up to shadowbringers. if the way the story is presented however just doesn't catch you, or its just not your kind of story than thats perfectly fine, sad for you as you miss out on joy to be had elsewhere but otherwise just fine. i mean i love lord of the rings and hate game of thrones, doesn't mean either one is objectively bad.

Problem with a retcon of their own lore is the old story is right there, they could rewrite that as well to keep it in line.

sure but a lot of what people call "retcon" on here really boils down to "we believed to know better but we didn't" and if you define retcon like that than actual real world history had more than one retcon.

mind you when you think "retcon" in ff14 you may think of very different things than i do and its hard to discuss something like this without entering heavy spoiler territory so i'll leave it at that. still though, a lot (not saying everything) that people call retcon on here makes perfect sense in lore. Realising that the earth revolves around the sun and not the other way around did not "retcon" the god apollo dragging the sun along the firmament on his chariot.
