In-game content behind paywalls/ Exclusivity on limited time events/mounts/etc

I'm thinking especially about the Garo and Yokai events here - Garo even more than Yokai: PvP was never really popular, despite some nice rewards being locked behind it. When Garo was first announced with the addition of "This is going away at somepoint" we suddenly had acceptable PvP-queues for a couple of months, because people wanted to make sure not to miss out. I know its anedotacial, but quite a few of my friends and FC-mates who arent into PvP tried their hands on it during that time - and they wouldnt have wouldnt it been content that was bound to go away.

I think whats best for the playerbase is a mix of rewards that are always available - and rewards that are only there for a limited amount of time, since those later rewards give people a push in a certain direction, to try content they normally wouldnt or to add some motivation to do this content right now. Often to the benefit of other people - you need players for queues, for FATEs. By making certain things limited time only, you concentrate the intrest of players into that timeframe, making sure the content actually gets played. I'm having the Halloween and Valentines Day duties in mind right now: They're only available for a couple of weeks each year, so everyone intrested in them focusses on them in this time frame. If it were more spread out, queues would be much, much slower.

First let me thank you for a valid point you are making without attacking me making some assumption about lack of control, economic feasibility, or entitlement. Instead, you are bringing a positive to timed events vs trying to make an assumption about me. It's refreshing and much appreciated.

I feel like this is a fair argument. I would say that limited time events may bring more people in that might not have done it but, like myself, it also keeps people away. The Garo event lasted over a year if I remember correctly, it was a long-ass time. Also, the yokai watch event has been brought back several times because people didn't get to participate. This is the 3rd yokai watch event... Why double standards on these things and not other things. I mean I don't care if events come back at all that isn't my point. I just don't think the exclusive bragging rights of the 100 weigh more than the number of potential players that might want to do the content for these rewards and be able to obtain rewards from past seasons. While my posts bring up more than time-events, it clear if you read people signatures on these forums and been apart of this community for a while people have wanted the PVP mounts. Like, you have to have skill and determination to get these mounts even if they weren't locked behind a specific time you wouldn't be guaranteed to get them. If the top 100 wanted to keep it exclusive they could just make sure they are in the top 100 again and again. I would say the same skill and determination are needed for something like clearing an ultimate trail or something else that is considered high end. People can do those years later and get the same titles. Why aren't ultimates time-gated. The producer has said several times, go take a break and play other games but then turns around and says hey you weren't here then so you miss out.

Ultimates aren't time gated because they aren't meant to be seasonal. Same with collab events. There isnt a double standard they are two separate things.

Seasonal events and challenges are meant to have players play throughout the year and reward players for doing so at that time. Pvp rewards and titles are different because they aren't as constant but I think the reason those change is because if you keep the reward the same, the pool of players who are into that kind of challenge diminishes over time. So instead of top 100 players, you have an endless list of players who would eventually achieve just based on lack of interest of the people who actually like to do said activity as the rewards offer no benefit to them. Then you have to throw in the idea that those titles or items would lose their exclusivity, which would take away player agency as the previous post said.

Yeah Yoshida says go take a break but it's not like he's saying go take a break while there is content you specifically want to accomplish. He's saying, say you're a raider and you are done with the tier, go take a break until the next tier. Of course if you like houses that's a whole different thing that goes against that.

Right but just cause you keep the rewards from prior season in the pool, doesn't mean you can't make new rewards and does that mean you are for making new titles for the new firmament season.

If you keep it in the pool it diminishes the exclusivity which is what people like about it. Not everything should be accessible to everyone. Doesn't matter how few people get the benefit, having exclusive rewards is a good thing for any game that has multi-player content as it creates competition and a sense of player agency in doing said content, and then gives that sense of achievement when you get that reward. There is plenty of content where everyone can get the rewards, for the handful of exclusive content, it's cool that some people can show off. It's honestly kind of like the legacy rewards. Like hey, thanks for doing (some thing) at (a given time), here's a reward only you can get forever. Hell, when they gave the white ravens as a nostalgia token during the rising event, people flipped. And that wasn't even meant to be about making the item available to everyone, it was just a cool thing to promote the history of the game.

And I'm pretty sure in the live letter they said there will be new titles for the firmament. Either completely different or marked by a different number, I forget which.

Oh boy, sounds like OP is finally having a meltdown.

Dunno, not sure many people really care all that much... Fans eat up the merch despite the prices, the bonus emotes, minions, songs, etc. spur ooohs and aaahs for a while but for the most part these kinds of exclusive stuff end up being pretty forgettable. As for in game exculsive stuff, feel like they nailed the rewards fairly well, ishgard thing, titles are pretty much the lowest importance with "collectables" pretty bland, now if they made those titles a different color or flashy then yeah you'd definitely see an uproar. Pvp exclusives arent too jarring either, seen folks with the mount or armor met with wows and congrats rather than awws or bummers, but yeah if they tossed some like an exclusive sephrioth outfit then yeah you'll see an avalanche of complaints. I just feel its not really that important to bash you're head against...

They don't get away with anything, they put it up people buy the items, if you want to point blame, player base willing to spend the money for the items.
It's why the store exist, if nobody bought anything it would mean SE would have to re-think the store.

Which will never happen, I mean I know the type of people, on psn I'll be playing some random game online someone would be like I would pay for a sub fee to have so and so or this and that and that's the type of people who will spend the money.

It would be like if SE said well we were thinking of putting zack's and Tifa and Rikku hairstyles in the store but it would cost us money to develop, how much you wanna bet people would be like oh how much do you need I am willing to pay whatever price to get them on the store and people will it's like the crowdfunding or gofund me people actually do that stuff but others wouldn't they believe everything should be gotten by hard work and dedication rightfully so but there is always gonna be someone different.
