Mogstation and New Content

It's also pretty limited when it comes to vanity stuff - old holiday stuff you can rebuy in-game anyway if you were there when they happened, some other region promotional items that get brought in sans a promotion, a few npc outfits/looks, and even armor sets that are already in the game (and can be dyed I think) just done in unique colors as level 1 vanity items.

I think there has been one time where, when looking for a glamour set, I thought a mogshop option was what I was looking for.

And there's the argument that always shows up in these threads.

So should everything in a theme park be free seeing as you had to pay to get in? How about at a local pool, should the food be free seeing as you typically have to pay to get in? Should games at a Golf course be free if you're a member of the country club? What about movie theaters? Eight to ten dollars per seat and I HAVE to pay for food items should I want any. What about when you go on a cruise? Sure somethings might be covered by what you paid for your passage, but why isn't everything free?

Just because you pay a sub does not mean there won't be additional charges for things that are completely optional.

Actually, the Mogstation's prevalence is entirely in our control and pretending we have to bend over and let SE list whatever they please for sale on their is self-defeating.

I mean really, we get cultural dances for the major cities through questlines and when the opportunity arises to introduce a far east dance from Doma - a region we will be visiting in Stormblood - does that too follow the pattern? No. Now it's straight to the cash shop.

Arguing about need in a video game is silly. You don't need anything in a game. What people value from a game, however, is subjective from person to person.

Or, you know, they don't have to add (or readd) anything from the cash shop into the game at all. Without the shop, the seasonal may never be obtainable again if they decided not to, and the items that didn't exist at all prior didn't have to exist in general. The cash shop aids the game, and gives them a place to create smaller things for money in which goes into adding more bigger things that go directly into the game.

I'm still against cash shop but thats only because they aren't transparent with it at all. Yoshi said in the past that it would be used to fund the game more but is it really? We will never know unless they actually post some $$$ and what the $$$ was used on. We all know he's using some of the cash shop money to create more cash shop items cause that parts obvious. How and what is it being used on for the actual subscription content though and how much of it are they retaining as profit? Lets be honest here, they would keep some of it as a profit cause this is a business...

The only thing I've bought from the cash shop is the playdead emote cause its fun to use. I've actually hated the fact that they started adding emotes to the cash shop cause now that means we might see less of them in subscription based content. Even the new emote isnt sub based.

This whole thing is a giant gray area. On the one hand its totally optional content but at the same time it could have easily been put in the game as subscription stuff. The idea was to use the sales as more funding for the game but without transparency that just leaves everyone wondering if greed is sinking in...

I usually only lurk in threads like this but I would like to point out: The Far Eastern Dance was a promotional item given to the Chinese players of the game. It was an exlusive item that the Devs made for that audience per the unknown details of the contract they have with the provider that allows the game to be accessed in that country. It went to the cash shop because the Chinese and Korean players had to pay for it, so we have to pay for it as well.

Its not that much smaller and FF14 has never released new shop items when there has been no new game content released in over 8 months. WoW has.

I get people are frustrated that there are things on the Cash Shop they want and they cant get in game but the reality is that if we didn't have the cash shop we would end up getting less, not more. The cash shop increases the revenue FF14 receives and in turn justifies higher investment into the game. Unless you have a suggestion that will guarantee a sudden explosion in the FF14 sub numbers, a cash shop is a valid and effective way of them increasing revenue and in turn providing justification to reinvest, hire new staff and upgrade systems.

You want more in FF14? Then SE needs to find a way to finance extra projects.

WoW add things like once or twice a year though, and most of the seasonal stuff is in game when the event comes up again. Right now SE is updating the cash shop once a month it seems. That's not to say they shouldn't have a cash shop at all but it seems they are getting way more aggressive with it lately.

A while back the unofficial census estimated Sleipnir alone brought in nearly $700,000 USD in just under a year. Not to sound callous, but your individual sub means nothing to them when people spend to the tune of millions on overall mogstation purchases.

The reality is, micro-transactions are a response to substantially growing production costs. Companies do not want to eat the sudden millions of dollars lost, thus they try offsetting those costs onto the customer. Were it not for cash shops, DLC and etc, game prices would skyrocket. Capcom's CEO flatout said he feels games shouldn't be cheaper than $150 and EA more eloquently agreed, citing the aforementioned cost of development being too high nowadays. What wound up being the compromise are micro-transactions, which I am okay with, personally. Why? Instead of being charged a significantly higher flat rate on a game I may not even like, I can opt into entirely optional content once I'm happy with the product. Does it suck we won't be able to obtain everything without opening our wallets? Yes, but it will not change. And it isn't unique to FFXIV. In fact, you'll have more trouble finding a game that doesn't have some form of add on.

A lot of the stuff they add is stuff players demanded they add, including Seasonal stuff. There were threads asking for it. Most of the stuff they have added lately is special marketing sets originally only intended to be released in China and Korea. The only reason they are on our cash shop is players demanded that SE sell them to us too.

As for WoW, they do allow you to access most previous years seasonal events but they have barely updated their seasonal events over the years. Some years they haven't even bothered to add anything.
