Wouldn't be the first time a piece of software was "improved" by making it worse.

I think they probably wanted to freeze everything before the gil could be spreaded between too many accounts.
Another North Korean hacking scandal??!?!??!
This is ridiculous! Glad SE is on it...after we need to get our money back. We worked hard for our gil...
Man I'd be pissed if I was crafting an item that requires like 36 philosophy items and SE switches the server off.
Do you grasp what would of happened had SE not pulled the plug? Had the exploit been allowed to go on, enough people would of been affected that SE would have to either A) Do nothing but ban some accounts or B) FULL ROLLBACK TO THE LAST BACK UP. We could've lost DAYS of game progress. The alternative would send a message to RMTs that SE will do nothing about stealing. FORTUNATELY, SE did the VASTLY SUPERIOR and MUCH smarter thing and pulled the plug. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Squeenix white knight. In fact, I'm one of the most scathing critics when it comes to their recent handling of IPs, ESPECIALLY this particular game. However, as any good critic ought to, I acknowledge a well done, smart move when I see one and yanking the servers early for maintenance is one of the smartest things they've done since launch. For me, this was a huge step in regaining my trust as a customer. They got a ways to go, but I just might consider buying other SE games again. Possibly. We'll see.
It's a double dilemma here.
In any case, we now know that they will just shut down the servers without any warning at all... So when is the best time to craft expensive items with mats that took a whole week to obtain?
Unless the hackers are hacking into account information... otherwise, even a one-minute... or a 30-second warning beforehand would have executed better imo
There really that huge of a different between instantly, and a five minute shutdown warning? No more damage then was already done would occur in five minutes.
However, I wouldn't be surprised if when the servers come back up there is a small rollback. Typically MMOs do not instantly save data, and if the last save point is a few minutes before the shutdown... you might get your mats back.
