in FF11 you had to sit in a giant blob of people waiting for a rare mob to spawn so you could tag it to get good gear.
It was pure idiocy, and its only saving grace was that the person who got the drop could brag about it.

Probably been said
But FFXI does have item level, it did before it was just hidden, but now its visible for items level 100+.
Hippies. Hippies everywhere!
iLevel is here to stay and it will affect access to instances in 2.1.
Thank goodness.
"FFXI didn't have ilvl" is false. It did have item level; it was just invisible and doled out extremely inconsistently, so that you'd get Lv.7 Leaping Boots that outclassed every other footwear until the mid-60s or so. Then, since you could swap gear in content, you didn't even get that "customize how you play through your gear" effect that you apparently want; you'd just bring your entire wardrobe with you and gearswap into the situational gear you needed when you needed it.
Pre-Abyssea FFXI gear design is the pits. It's not worth romanticizing. I would like some post-Abyssea gear design, though, like the AF3 gear sets that provided job ability boosts and set bonuses as well as common stats.
I love these kinds of things too. Weapons should often have a fun proc, especially relics. The few set bonuses in game now are boring, such as the GC sets where you get +10 spell speed for example.
I don't want horizontal progression like some are asking for, because that's just boring and god help me if I spend years in AK for example, farming different pieces due to needing different sets.
People are blaming WoW for vertical progression, when it already existed. Also, even WoW had fun gear set bonuses, and weapon/trinket/etc procs that make things more interesting. The highest ilevel in WoW was normally your best in slot, but there were always exceptions ♥
Why thank goodness? I was doing Titan with GC Sword and Kite Shield, I offered to tank and was told "HAHA U KANT TANK HAWHAW" etc, as well as "under geared pally" etc. I main tanked Titan and am now using my Relic Sword and Shield+1. All the restriction will do is show the bad players who believe gear > skill that they truly and utterly suck, whilst keeping out the good players who know that skill > gear. I'd rather play with people with average gear who know their jobs and don't require an average iLevel of 34987 for an easy fight like Titan than be in a dungeon with people who think just cause they have better gear they are gaming gods. All the iLvl restriction will do is show up the bad players, wait, I can't wait for it to appear now, except I'm stuck playing with them >.>
...which costs you a LOT more tomes: 9x125 tomes for Potash for one vanya silk. Robe requires one, that's already 1125 tomes. Breeches require TWO. That's 2250 tomes for ONE SINGLE PIECE that is still inferior to DL until you meld it. Can't really count it an alternative, it's currently designed very badly.
Ilvl is just to ease up on how people will ask for what gear you may need to do x raid, dungeon ect. Before wow introduced ilvl people would say you need to have x gear to do this raid as minimum. Gear checks were just more complext but they darn exsisted in every game, you couldnt do black wings lair before molten core back in the day for example, you were expected to get gear to move to the next tier.
Examples now is how people just hit 50 and believe they can smack down AK with their lvl 44 wep ,af1 and crappy jewelry, ignoring wanderers palace completely which would get them better gear and even weapons to east the transition to ak. Ilvl makes things easier to identify. im glad they are going in the same route as wow having ilvl checks to go in dungeons to deter those who think they can tackle a challange with crappy gear and just be a crutch for the rest of the group
Go go anecdotal evidence!
Glancing at your HP total, your lesser gear was countered by a more skilled/better geared healer. I'm not saying you're bad, in fact quite the opposite you're probably pretty skilled to if you picked up the fight and pulled a good cooldown rotation on your first run through. You need to recognize though that as a lesser geared tank on a fight that's basically tank and spank your gear deficiency was covered by a better than usual skilled/geared healer.
Of course iLevel restrictions aren't likely to affect Titan Hard mode at all, as they will most likely AND should be bypassed by queueing as a full party just like the role restrictions. More likely it will only really effect entry hard modes and AK where people can duty queue solo and have an expectation of completion.
Minimum gear level > Skill > BiS gear level
