You talk like the reason XIV failed the first time was BECAUSE of superior graphics instead of IN SPITE OF them.

The graphics had nothing to do with why XIV did badly. In fact, it was one of the few things actually praised by players and critics alike.

It failed because it lacked everything else. And that's because games are an amalgam of different things. You can't skimp in some areas and expect the areas the game does shine in to just gloss that fact over.

SE should have learned this lesson the first time around.

Yes, let's ignore what the real problems were and how graphics was actually one of the good aspects about 1.0 initially.

okay this has been brought up many times, that the graphics were praised...

but I remeber most of the reviews actually saying how the stop/start animation made the CONTROLS feel clunky,, sluggish, and unresponsive and they cited that as a major drawback to the game and feeling like a step backwards and valuing style over substance...

Graphics/animations/presentation and gameplay/functionality are equally important for FFXIV, but what is more important than either of those is the balance set between them.

Realistic animations and such are great, however when they get in the way of better gameplay in a video game then the balance is upset.

Can they improve the animations we saw in the pre-alpha gameplay? Should they? Sure. This doesn't mean that they should return to what the current version has or that the current version is any better.

The game's engine is what made it feel clunky. Do this: Change your gear while running in XIV, change your gear while running in FFXI, see which one feels clunky.

Also do this: Check someone's bazaar in FFXIV then check someone's bazaar in FFXI, see which one feel's clunky. If you can't play FFXI, then you'll realize it wasn't the graphics and just people placing the blame on something unrelated as they're not used to a game actually having nice animations, the fact of the matter is and even SE admitted this time and time again the engine wasn't suited for MMORPGs, that's where the problems lie, as well as the servers. Simple test if you know how to eyeball server checks, count how many server checks there are for a simple action in this game versus any other MMO you may play.

like I said, The runing animations were SPECIFICALLY mentioned in serval reviews as feeling sluggish and unresponsive due to the half step you take when starting and stopping...

I don't have a dog in this fight, personnally I don't give a flyin' feck about it, I just remember what several reviews actaully said.


(Edit: Basically, when I saw the reviews mentioning this, I actually agreed, the intertial movement took awhile to get used to because taking your finger off "W" didn't mean your were stopping right then, and for quite awhile I thought it was lag, until I made a Lalafell ALT where the stopping animation is much more pronounced than in the other races. I'll agree it looks neat... but I can also live without it, not really a deal breaker for me)

I think we need to make sure people understand that having polished animation does not equal to having lag/animation lock/clunkiness (none of us would want these).

People just assume the lack of good animation in the alpha video was because that's the solution to reduce lag or the sluggishness game play, when in fact the rep already stated that it was because their focus was not on the animation but rather on other things.

We just want to let them know animation is also important to a lot of us that it should be one of the higher priorities, too.

The real problems were many, and one of these was the general slow in character reaction, both for animation lock and the stopping/moving/turning of the character. For god's sake, that fucking step animation is such a game breaking to you to sink all the good things 2.0 is bringing ? Get some priority. Animations got changed several times in the current version, what's the problem skipping some animation frame at launch (if it ever be) ? The can always add it later

If I remember correctly (this was about 2 years ago), while the game was praised for its graphics it was also ridiculed because of the fact that critics noticed that a vast majority of the market didn't have the computer to play this game. So while it definitely wasn't one of the core reasons why 1.0 flopped, it definitely added on to it.
