Im going to say templar
Reaper could range from anything from a Golbez/Ranjit style class, a magitek class alluding to the Reaper line of Magitek armor, a DPS Dark Knight, a Necromancer and a few more.
The reality is the only info we really know is that the armor class will be shared with dragoons and that they are a melee dps.
Could be anything as far as we know.
And lance's operate differently from Scythes.
2 handed axes are also considered polearms.
Wouldn't it be a kicker if Zenos new weapon was the scythe and the new job class was something else entirely.
You summarize that argument extremely well, anything can be something that already exists if you dumb it down enough.
Red mage is just black mage with a different hat and a jewelry staff.
Ninja is just monk with knives.
Machinist is just Bard with a gun instead of a bow.
But yet, in former FF we have had paladins and templar both in the same games, so I guess they are different enough right ? xD
I think more then likely it is going to be a Garlean magitek class then anything else. Judge is what I guessed the name was going to be but it could easily be Templar or something else. After all, the Garlean Empire and the Garlean Imperial Army were created and led by a man named Hades, after the Greek God of Death. The Garlean military's main war mech is called the Reaper and Yoshida chose to shove our face into this fact in 5.5 by having us fight a couple of dozen of the things in Paglth'an after teasing us with Grim Reaper t-shirts for two months.
Also in addition to showing off that new "Yellow Death" attack Gaius also spent the better part of the last two and a half years hanging around with our new Sage, Alphinaud, and the game's main Dragoon NPC, Estinien. In Stormblood Alphinaud's sister Alisaie showcased the mage job while a soldier named Gosetsu from a war-torn land ruled over by Zenos we were about to visit (Doma) showcased the new melee job. This time we have Alphinaud showcasing the new mage job and we have a soldier named Gaius whose war-torn homeland currently ruled over by Zenos we are about to visit showcasing new abilities in cutscenes and serving as an allied NPC in duties. Those are both interesting coincidences.
Then there is the fact that right before the Grim Reaper t-shirt tease they put a series of Garlean / Judge-style armor, the Law's Order series, in the game like how they put the samurai-style Asuran gear in the game right before the Spiderman shirt tease. And they went out of their way in the Gunbreaker class quests to make sure the player knew that the Garlean gunblades were a different kind of weapon from the ones the Gunbreaker class uses.
Now I could easily be wrong and I have been wrong before about the developers' intentions. For example, I had thought they wouldn't genderlock the Viera. But I am seeing a lot death themes and imagery connected to Garlean soldiers - and Gaius in particular - and more than a couple of parallels to Gosetsu and the Samurai reveal and what is currently happening with Gaius in the game.
But if I am right, given what I have seen of Gaius's abilities, this new class will likely play as a mixture of Sword Saint and Judge.
I wouldn't be against it, honestly all that talk about Reaper kind of made me sick of it xD
You bring a lot of interesting points... Although if it's such a case and we'll get "JDG", I'm iffy with the name... I can't help but to think about Judge Judy in an adventure, or more seriously, Judges across the series were always a figure of authoritarism and something that I don't feel quite suited to an adventurer that more often than not finds themselves challenging systems and traditions.
I have a peeve with Sage too... But more because the name of the job doesn't match at all the aesthetics presented. Plus 'Sage' entails a more seasoned magician, all the sages across the series were always portrayed as such, like Tellah or Strago. I love the job concept, but I almost wish they did come up with an unique name for that, like they did with Gunbreaker.
The whole Gaius thing with "Crocea Mors" (Yellow Death) is interesting.
It could be just some extra flavor for Gaius, since it's directly connected to him and not necessarily to any job or something.
Not sure if everyone here already knows it, but Crocea Mors is the name of Gaius Julius Caesar's sword.
Could still be relevant as a job hint possibly, although I have no idea what it would even hint at.
Yes, it is a possibility that Gaius's new attack was just flavor for his character. But at the same time we are also heading to his homeland this expansion, which happens to be the heartland of an empire forged by a man named after the Greek God of Death. An empire whose army's main armored vehicle is called the Reaper and Gaius is a former officer in said army. Then there is the fact that Gaius's old helmet did have a skull face plate on it and Gaius's previous abilities were all named in a very specific theme:
- Innocence
- Sentence
- Heirsbane
- Hand of the Empire
- Terminus Est (Latin for "It is the End" or "It is the Limit")
- Judgment
So the fact that we are getting Judge themed armor after he defected to our side and is starting to showcase new abilities while at the same time we are heading to his homeland in Hade's empire....
I don't know, my brain tells me this could all be coincidences and Yoshida's shirt could be hinting at something else. But my gut is telling me these are an awful lot of coincidences and there is a very specific pattern to them.
