Sort of still holding on to hope though not necessarily for the current models. As sad as it is, there's probably plenty of people by now who like the new models and changing them would rob them of their character. While I do want my hyur to get her original cuteness back, I also don't want to rob someone else of their character, not to even mention how everyone's preferences vary and what would be a good change to me would be bad for someone else.

What hope I do have is mostly for the possible future improvement of the character customization in form of either new face presets that would perhaps reflect the original models more and provide overall variety or if I really dare to hope then I would love some actual face sliders to allow us to customize the current faces we already have.

Currently I'm kinda holding on towards the 8.0, since there's no plans for new races anymore, I could see the reworked CC as a new selling point. If nothing is changed by then, I guess I'll just have to accept that my main is gone permanently and stick to my alts, which while I do like, cannot really replace my main.

But aside from not liking how certain characters changed after update, I do think that the update was a net positive. Looking at some old screenshots from prior to update, I didn't even remember how horrendous the characters would look in certain areas and lighting so there's that plus the environments definitely also got a glow up.

Oh god, this reminded me that after they finally finished making female Hrothgar they teased the possibility of backpedaling from "FFXIV getting no more races" to a hilariously lukewarm response. With how much they struggled with Viera and Hrothgar I genuinely hope they never add more playable races again. Instead my last-ditch hope really is that they expand character creation for existing races, as well. I personally don't expect this game to get things like face or body sliders, but several more options per face in every category & some new presets to choose from could go a long way.

Also at this point I'll take an "on/off" option for Auri limbal ring glow. I know I'll never get my previous color back but I just can't take these headlights anymore!!!!!

I would love a CC update and even if they cannot give us sliders I feel they need to move into letting us choose better shape at the bottom. Not dodgy or odd but the 2b bottoms are great and take my character from looking like a kid to a shapely woman but you have to walk round with half your arse showing unless you can find a nice dress/outfit to flatter. I think maybe they should add more gear that gives you a shape or a slider.

It would be nice if they could fix the Midlander eye bags and the umbral rings are just too bright for my taste. Lets hope they have something they are working on.

I still hate the viera face 4 lips, compared to the face 1 lips, the lips look unfinished, which I guess they just are. With face 1 they are soft and shaped like more normal lips while on face 4 they look like when someone start to learn how to draw lips, the cupids bow is just weirdly shallow. The small changes that have been happening over the months have been beneficial for my viera, but she is still not back to her "normal" self, due to the lips, basically. In screenshots I manage to shape them as I want more or less but I have lately been considering extra tools to make them look more natural as face 1 lips.
My miqo was easier to transition since I wasn't overly attached to her, the lack of eyebrows are still terrible on her and I support the thread that keeps the issue alive, so to speak.
I guess I have more or less accepted that my viera will never fully recover. I don't think there was too much of an outcry in regards to face 4s, they are not that common, I guess, so there simply won't be as many vocal about it.

I pretty much only got a small burst of "joy" in the game again with deep dungeon coming back but my character is just... not it. It makes it really hard to invest in the world in any way when the soulless black void stare she now has hits me front and centre with every cutscene.

A decade of worldbuilding with friends and expanding my own lore for the clan I play because we get nothing from the devs for roe or hellsguard wiped out as of the DT benchmark. It actually inherently broke something in me, who used to write and illustrate so much for this character, and killed my creative spirit.

I feel the same way, but not as deep in a creative sense (the most I did was draw my WoL) but in the way that my character holds irreplacable value to me. It's like losing a loved one, it's that bad.

Did the developers underestimate how much peoples' WoLs mean to them? I honestly don't understand how this update was approved, what happened to preserving the look? Why were racial features changed? Why did some races' pupils change size? What happened to the previous art direction?

I just can't be bothered to wait for nothing to happen anymore, it isn't that I don't care it's just too emotionally exhausting. It's especially hell for those of us attached to FF14 on the level of a special interest.

i'm so sorry that you are going through grief with this. i was so devastated that my veena got destroyed by dawntrail as well. fortunately, they made female hrothgar and i love her more than i had ever loved my veena. but i am a minority and many people like you are just stuck with looking at a character who isn't themselves anymore. it really does suck and i sympathize so much. :<

I wonder if they will again adjust and spend a free Fantasia. In my opinion they are much to silent about all this from the beginning. Also that there are never news of what they adjusted is frustrating. D:

I just wish I could play face 1 or 2 on my Midlander...I miss the mouth on face 2 so much and she had a softness to her face which I loved. I hate the eyebags on face 1 but they seem to be on a few faces also now on other races I noticed.

Let us hope they give us another free fantasia and explain what they are doing going forward.

I actually agree...? There is ONE face I saw be redone in post that looked way better (Elezen F, face 1), but if they had spent that time tweaking gear and environments instead of redesigning faces 3 more times, I feel like we'd be singing a different tune.
I played the infamous Miqo'te face pre-update and recently swapped to it again, and I absolutely like the razor brow look more after playing her and at this point would be bummed to lose it.

One thing is the way characters look now, with better textures and more defined shadows, is probably closer to what the devs always wanted them to look. Some "Old" faces look like trash to me, personally, but now look alive and attactive based on little things like less pixelly lips and noses and more pronounced eye catchlights. But then the person who chose that face looks at this new version like a plastic surgery failure. No one can win!

I do appreciate the free Fantasias, though.

The biggest disappointment is, the fact all of these issues could’ve been avoided if they just expand their 10+ years old creator options rather than outright replacing the old looks.

The main problem with such statements: they imply that all faces are good enough and tweaking them is just pandering to a small vocal minority and a matter of taste. Unfortunately it's not the case. Many face/gender combinations suffer from poorly implemented redesign borderline on visual bugs, like this poor fellow:

Certainly, it would be great if Mr Yoshida allocated some resources to hire an outsourced team to fix all faces in one fell swoop, but I guess he considers adjusting faces a low priority. Well, at least you get a free fantasia.

It looks for me, that they used a sort of AI upscaling to recreate the faces with a higher poly count. Because all of the errors, the old faces had like wrong normal/parallax maps are still there. It seems, that they do not even know what they are doing. But they have memorized on which buttons they have to click.

BTW, one year and five months have passed since the DT launch. All these issues were noticed by players, and feedback was provided. Well, I'm quite sure that at least some of those issues will certainly be fixed in 8.0!

P.S. My poor girl still suffers from the bee sting on her lower lip. At least the upper lip was a little bit corrected; praise the Twelve.

that triangular face shadow definitely looks like a defect. I have a Fem Au Ra, face 4 w/ that same issue, i filed a bug report back when the DT benchmark was released but no luck. I'm hoping someone else has filed a bug report that was accepted. some of these issues w/ the character faces/models are very visible, and it genuinely makes me wonder how it wasn't caught during testing, or how it even got approved for production.

Given we have, on record, Yoshida confirming that there has been complacency across all teams (PLL where they discussed feedback relating to OC and Forked Tower) this doesn't surprise me in the slightest, frankly.

People gave extensive feedback from the get go, not just regarding aesthetic changes but literal bugs since the benchmark through to present day, for a multitude of issues which are still present to this day almost 2 years into the expac. How it got approved is that they don't care — whether that's CU3 themselves or pressure from up high making it harder for them to care we don't know.

The hard no to further details regarding the fixes from Yoshida's last official post about it with the whole 'check the changes we make every patch, have a free fantasia, good luck' mood certainly doesn't help that feeling at all.

Then you have people like me who see side-by-sides of the 6.55 and 7.35 appearances and consistently think the new versions look better in every way that I can see. But the old version is the one that has an untold amount of time that the player in question looked at and enjoyed and got attached to.

I don't think there is really any way to win this.

The stated intent was to “preserve the overall look and feel of the characters.” Actually achieving that goal in the many cases where they fell short of it should take precedence.

I’m happy that some races and faces got a definite improvement, but those who are still after almost 4 patches wondering when or if their character will ever look like themselves again have every right to continue voicing their displeasure and expect meaningful changes to address their complaints.

We were told to expect a graphic update/upgrade, our beloved characters, only better quality. That’s not what many of us received, and if they were planning to change the whole aesthetic instead of just upgrade the existing faces they should have said so. If some people liked the changes, great, maybe they can add those to the character creator later. But the priority should be on actually doing what they said they were going to do first. Those who like the “new look” have only had it for an expansion, as opposed to those who don’t losing the look they’ve had for years before that.

It feels like this exact conversation has happened millions of times in this thread. It's self-explanatory, there's no need to constantly question why people miss their original appearance. I've posted this particular example time and time again but how could anyone believe this to be an improvement?

It's a shame that even as 7.4 approaches that the development team never delivered on their original word. As much as I appreciate if someone adores their face they've known for a year as opposed to let's say five years, shouldn't this have taken precedent?

Also, as someone who paid attention to people reporting each graphical tweak for the most part I haven't seen anything personally "get worse", most of those changes seemed to bring things very slightly closer to the original look for some races.
My face has personally not been touched even a smidge. The only changes that actually affected me were the scale texture changes and the limbral ring lighting and I haven't touched the latter since EW.

That's really what it boils down to. A lot of people think they did not deliver, and a lot of people think they did. Thus, endless conversation, impossibility of making everyone happy.

I'll take as many free fantasias as they give me, but at some point you start wondering whether they are wasting dev resources on fiddling with the faces when there are more glaring issues with the game

The most ideal win would be that they either make a duplicate of every face as it currently is, and then adjust one copy to be closer to the old model, or they start from scratch with a second set of faces and get their "retain the original" goal right this time.

The ‘win’ they’re looking for is to let people retain their old look AND let those who likes the updates pick the updated ones. This is an “Apple or Orange” case because no matter how ‘ugly/pretty’ the old or new looks are, there’s always somebody liking what they see. It’s subjective. In short: expand their 10+ years old character creator system.

But that’s probably a ‘lose’ for their shareholders wallets so now we’re stuck ‘in the middle’ with free patchly Fantasias given out—IMHO in hoping to keep people just tolerating enough to keep subbing or play with ‘new updated looks’. Truly, never once I thought this blue phial would be the fuel to gaslight my personal sentiment lol. /j

I'd be fine if SE fixes glaring issues with the "updated" faces: the triangle face shape, narrow eyelids when eyes are closed, swollen injected lips, non-removable lipstick, the unified iris texture and iris placement, and (the worst offender) creepy U-shaped smiles. It's not even about the resemblance to the old faces but about the poor quality of the said "graphical update". I've already written about all the issues I could see with illustrated examples; there is no point in repeating myself.

It kind of baffles me that instead of the upgrade, many faces were downgraded; yes, the polygon count increased, but the artistic quality went down. There are few exceptions, of course; some rugged male faces suddenly got more handsome but also retained their characteristic stylised features from the past. I wish all faces got the same treatment, but oh well, I guess the costs were too high.

I already accepted that my character is dead. It didn't make me happy, and I'm very bitter, but I can live with it. If all visual problems are fixed, and finally I will be able to see my new character smile in cutscenes without facepalming, I'll be content (and will probably stop posting in this thread).

Apparently, Yugiri's Au Ra head is in the files for (the still CN locked) FFXIV Mobile. I've never felt so stressed in my life.

Given my WoL actually looks like herself in mobile I absolutely know where you're coming from with this :( The upside is when that eventually comes we've got another point of reference to give as a "why can an entire other team honour the visual aesthetic significantly better than CU3 actual" even if it will be a bitter one.

I'm not sure if it belongs in here, since it involves hairstyles on characters in DT, but one of the major advertisements of 7.3 was the inclusion of hair bangs that peek out from beneath hoods similar as they do in hats. However, several of the classic ARR hairstyles for Femme Midlanders are either botched or simply don't have this feature. In particular, I've used this hairstyle below that's been a staple since ARR (and on popular characters like Rowena) and she goes completely bald with certain hats and hoods, with an altered sidebang on others. It'd be nice if we could get cute front bangs or fringes peeking out from the front of these hoods like the hairstyle normally has, especially so that it can compare to newer and more modern hairstyles that have received this feature aesthetically as of the current patch. The comparison below is taken as of 7.3:

Might be worth reporting that in the bug forum. It may be intended due to the shape of the hoods, but could be an oversight also. Can't hurt in any case.

Took your recommendation! But just in case it's not a bug, then my desires still stand to see certain ARR hairstyles brought to the fidelity of recent ones in Dawntrail, especially where it concerns headwear hiding a majority of the unique aspects of the hair.

I have the same issue with my hairstyle (on hats as well), if you report it they would say it's intended (speaking from experience). Some older hairstyles just don't get to have their bangs show due to clipping. It's very inconsistent though, there are hairstyles with some clipping that I see showing their bangs. I understand the frustration because there is a particular item I really want to wear but my bangs being cut off ruins it.

To me it reads like whatever server limitations they had on how many options can be layered and toggled on and off on an individual player character is higher than before.

What's funny is that's literally the reason Au Ra horns are locked; server load shenanigans.

So actually adding more options to faces on some level is in the pipeline, but what he described is the specifically expanding the "facial feature" category with more options.

I think the reason we don't have a separate section to choose our horns has to do with the amount of options you can edit in the character creator. An example:
While Wildwood Elezen can choose ear clasps and color, Duskwight Elezen can choose face tattoos and color instead. We don't have both options, and they seem to occupy the same "slot" in the character creator menu so to speak.

While I am not sure, my theory is that they have to figure out how to add more menu options to the character creator more than server load issues. It's not the same to have 7 facial features instead of 6, than to have 1-2 more menu options with 4+ features inside each.

Then again, no idea. We could really use more options for our characters. I hope they figure it out asap.

Looked at Emet again today. I miss the glow of his eyes in his Ancient form so much. He just has dead eyes and a blank expression. Like my midlander who still has this weird resting stoned puffy botoxed face.

I never thought I'd say but I'd give anything to have the old graphics back. We had an edge, we had the spark of life in our eyes.

The lighting when we saw Emet again after arriving in Elpis made the scene so magical. That magic is gone. It needs to be brought back. Lighting in this game needs to be restored.

We also need a lot more faces to choose from. And fix Thancred's face, thank you. I don't want a clone of my midlander, I want Thancred. I also want more eye colours, glowing, neon, the works. More make-up colours, more flashier ones.
