I did a bit more than just bare minimum edits for this in the hopes that even if the current faces won't get updated/fixed further that we could possibly get new added faces more in line of the edit. Overall as a face 1 middie lover specifically, I wished the faces would slim down the nose, the current one looks rather big and the nostrils look flared and remove the big puffy eyelids along with bringing the eyeball slightly forward to make the eyes look less sunken in (I should'vee added some bottom eyelashes so image she has some). I also edited the jaw just slightly and brought the eyes down a bit for a more "youthful" look but that's a bit of extra I did just to highlight my personal taste rather than being an attempt at an objective fix.
But yea really wish we got something closer to the edit, maybe in form of a completely new face, my current middie has been sitting on sidelines untouched as I'm playing my alts in hope for the better future for my main.

I'm adding a face 5 to the mix, because I can and I have rage. It's the face that really want to like, because it's without a doubt the cutest of them all and I like cute but no matter what I can never get the face to work for me so it never gets used.
My biggest beef with face 5 is that while the nose size is fine the shape just looks so artificial like a product of plastic surgery, so I would smoothen it out a bit, make it more "buttony" and cute. The eyes on the other hand just look shellshocked, like the WoL is constantly reliving the horrors of the eight umbral clamity. This is probably due to the weird lines around the eyes as well as due to the sunken eyeball syndrome that prevails all faces, I would fix both, bring forth the eyeball and smoothen out the trauma lines around the eyes. I also touched up the lips a bit since people said they got issues with them and I think it's the desaturation that makes them look so plasticy, giiving them a bit of color would improve the issue a lot. The last I would rounder out the jaw just a bit to make her face even cuter and make the chin look less "dorito"ish.
But yea overall, all the faces struggle from similar issues which could be fixed relatively easily with some sculpting or normal map adjusting (smoothening) or just give us whole new faces, that is always a good neutral option that I would imagine would please pretty much everyone.

You have shown how bad the midlander has changed. Face 1 just was ruined and she looks like she needs a big sleep and face 2 has lost that lovely pout and gentleness. The lips on all look rubbery and have no real textures and the noses look squashed and I find it so sad as I loved being a Midlander. I will be one again soon but on Au ra atm for a little change. I really hope they look again at what they have messed up as it looks bad.

I do get though that even my changes may not be to everyone's taste but I was kinda going for how I imagined the old characters would look if they got updated. The updated characters are high quality but I also feel like they lost some of that final fantasy aesthetic identity. I also agree on the lips, I didn't even try to save them but they indeed look plasticy and at least for me the only lipcolor I can use are the very pale ones because anything else just looks really unnatural as if the lip color were just plastic stickers slapped on the lips rather than a rouge.Quote:

I just wish they could overhaul the CC and take a look at how much they have changed. I want a nice shade of lip colour they just seem so beige on some of the faces it is sad :( -

Everything about her face has changed, and not for the better. Her nostrils are wider. Her mouth is still completely different. Her eyes are smaller with much, much less eye makeup (both top and bottom lashes), and her expression is more.. puffy. Her chin is rounder. And then the eyebags. Oohhhh the eyebags.

Not to say there aren't some objectively bad changed like the jaw being noticeable and the lips on many races as well but from an artist point of view this is just something I observed when comparing the models, especially when I look at all the pictures you posted. It just seems clear to me that not enough thought was put into preserving the "illusion" of the characters appearance than it's tecnhical jargon.

In fact to illustrate a point (on the left), I did the same edits to your character as I did to the previous edits; Make eyes a lot bigger, reduce puffy eyelids, make nose slimmer, make jaw smaller and bring eyes down a bit and despite my changes being obviously more on the nose (hehhe) it looks to me more in line with the original. -

I'm going to post this to the Japanese feedback thread too, hence the JP text on the images, but here's my feedback as of Patch 7.3. You can see my last feedback post here.
Since 7.0...- The "eyeliner" setting looks a little darker, which is good.
- The eye shape does not feel like it has changed at all. In general, it is still very different to the 6.0 version. All my criticisms and suggestions about this remain the same.
- The mouth shape has changed as of Patch 7.3. The curve is now softer, a little closer to the 6.0 version. However, I think the shape could still be improved.

Eyes:
The iris is smaller, and the pupil is larger. The iris no longer reaches the bottom of the eye's waterline. These changes are intentional stylistic changes, rather than changes due to the lighting. The combination gives the eye a very different shape and feeling. I feel like the sizes could be adjusted slightly, to their previous proportions, for a better feeling.

Mouth:
The curve of the mouth line is now a little softer as of Patch 7.3. The lower lip gradient was also made to be more gentle since Patch 7.0. These are good changes! I think the corners of the mouth could be made a little smoother, however, similar to the Patch 6.0 look. My WoL still looks very unlike herself when she smiles, which is a sad thing to think.

I'd like to share my suggestions and drawn edits for features of this face that still have not been fixed. Sorry in advance for the long post, but I hope this provides clear details.
Eyebrows
The eyebrows are the most drastically changed facial feature, and above all, I believe this needs the most urgent attention and correction. There already exists a Petition for this specific issue, which so far has had unanimous agreement for it to be fixed.

● The April benchmark was the first edit to be made in the new graphics. It showed a nice texture, but was too straight and pointed too high compared to the original. It also lacked a finely tapered tip, and was too short.
The next change made after this kept these flaws, and added more in addition. Now, the eyebrows were crushed thin at the inner corner, and made to look very dark and heavy. The texture has worsened and looks completely solid, lacking softened edges. It almost appears that the upper half of the inner eyebrow was shaved off accidentally. This affects every eyebrow type for this face. Surprisingly, this version remains in the game today, and has not yet seen any edits.

One detail that may have added to these eyebrows looking misshapen is the homogenization of Seeker and Keeper eyebrows for Face 2. Originally, these eyebrows were not identical for Sun Seekers and Moon Keepers of this face. The current eyebrows are based more on the Seeker, and the Keeper has lost its originality of longer, softer eyebrows with a more gently curved taper. These slight differences have only been exaggerated in the updated graphics. Please correct this.

Another error with these eyebrows is that they now spill over the shape of this "fake eyebrows" face paint, when they used to fit inside the paint's shape.
Please note: The face paint is at a similar angle to how it was before the update, so its shape does not need to be changed. Please fix this by only changing the shape of the actual eyebrow so that it matches its previous shape, and it will fit properly inside the face paint again.

● The lash line had also been moved, creating a disturbingly large gap between the eyelashes and the eye. Please move the eyelash line closer to the eye again.
● Please also restore the eyelashes on the inner side of the upper eyelid. With the angle they sit at and the fewer eyelashes, they are hard to see now.
Making the eyelashes thicker, longer, and at the same angle as the original eyelashes would be preferable.

Eyelids

● The eye sockets are too deep now. The upper eyelid crease had a different shape and was not very prominent before, but now the eyes look too deeply set, and can look scary under strong lighting. I would like to see the original eyelid style restored.

● Also important to note is that the original version had a light amount of eyeshadow makeup built-in to this face at the outer corner of the eyes. The new graphics seem to have mistaken that eyeshadow as a crease in the skin that casts a shadow.

Forehead markings on Keepers
● The markings on the forehead are stronger than they were before. They used to be partially transparent compared to the more solid cheek markings. If the white forehead markings are too strong, it draws attention and contributes to a harsher expression. I would like if the forehead markings were more transparent again.

● As is the case with other faces, the lip shape could use adjustment. The top lip is thinner, and the bottom lip is bigger than it previously was.

● The issues are corners of mouth, and also where the top and bottom lips meet and make an expression. The shape that the mouth makes is now more like a frown, and the bottom lip extends too high, nearly overlapping the upper lip. The frown also extends to the corners of the mouth. It used to be neutral, or slightly friendly looking.
There is also a strange gap between the lips that was not present before.
This face used to have a cool and subtly mischievous impression. Please give her back her personality!

Personally I've lost all hope about anything getting better and play FFXIV for the other aspects I liked before the graphics update. I just use replications of the old face models to cope. I dread when they finish updating all the gearsets because I'm not a fan of the new textures, currently they are the only old graphics part of my character. I am still here just missing my faces I used to use. I am flipflopping again with my character because I think I have it right and then nope....they really changed face 2 midlander mouth and nose and its such a shame.
I was looking back on old screenshots and it is really bad wtf made them think that it was a good idea to make all the mouths look like rubber?
I will never use mods and I know others use them and can make their characters look better but I would never risk it and why should I use mods when I have given a shit ton of money to SE playing the game for almost 16 years.
They need to update the character creator give us better options like body shape and improve skin textures. I am thinking they have either got some plans or they are hoping we have all accepted it. I know that they have 8.0 looming and what will be the selling point? lets hope it is a massive update to he CC and a fix for this mess. -

Still deeply disappointed that Aurelie has never regained her cute wide-eyed look, distinct nose or accurate human lip shape.
A couple of my alts have gotten better after they fixed something with the lighting, but others are still irretrievably changed and I miss them.
I've been meaning to do comparison reviews again but I've been on other projects.
I also agree about disliking the newer hyper-textured gear. It displays poorly on my screen (all the tiny details shift and twinkle endlessly) and they often dye blotchily. -

Additionally, I have noticed femail Aura look "better" to me at least. Something always seemed way off to me about them, but I not sure if it was something done to the way the scales were attached to their face or what, but it just appears better to me. I can understand that these kinds of changes would upset people who preferred the old look more. I wonder if there is a way to retain the old look or produce more options via the character creator, or add more sliders to it in regards to facial options. Also don't remember that silly smiling resting face on Miqo so I had to change that too. Such disappointment.
And when are we getting texture upgrades for older gear? So many armor pieces just look bad (Neo-Ishgardian armor - love the look, but the texture is just terrible). -

- The bottom lip isn't strangely separated into two starkly contrasting zones.
- The weird white triangle on the upper lip is gone.
- The lips aren't covered in random white lines.
I am quite perplexed as to why on multiple different patches the devs took the time to erase small differences in eye makeup on face 1 (both of which were better than the original IMO) to get them closer to the pre-DT look, but they won't correct this massive and incredibly bizarre departure from the old textures.

That last one is from an MSQ cutscene. Very distracting when you're trying to be immersed in the story.
And side note, the gifs above are another good example of how specific lighting sometimes blends the mangled lip shading together to make them look much better. Please just do that to the texture itself.
This is still an issue. Lights inside housing do not take their surrounding environment into account when casting shadows unless they're right next to you. Look at all the shadows popping in and out with every step in this small room.Quote:

Please greatly extend the render distance for lighting and shadows inside houses (and out in the world too IMO but that's a different issue). You should be able to stand at one end of a large house interior and see the correct shadows on the other side. Right now you practically have to be standing on top of light sources for things to look how they should.

Personally I still do not like how they add too much detail on Face 2 Male Highlander. Be it sunken cheekbones with extra cheek muscle, overly highlighted frowning brow bones, or just straight up changing nose shading.
It was never that detailed in the first place, and considering they never even touched this even from 7.0, I just assume they have no intention to take the player suggestions. Which, I guess developer's art direction it is.
I get it.
What I find it more annoying however (and sorry I hijack this into another 'where male highlander eyebrows') that they have not aced the eyebrow face paint placement. Every patch it changes back and forth, I think during 7.2 they were closer to what pre-DT supposed to be. But here comes another face paint change because every race use the same face paint and they have to fit them for everyone. And yet, the eyebrows paint are never the same anymore, it does really drive the message to home that as male highlander I have to re-apply new eyebrows each patch. Be it thinner on the tail end on older patch, then thick-like-Shin-chan eyebrows on the other patch.
ffs just give us our eyebrows, we are subjected to every race 3D mapping mercy right now. -

It's that time again, my fellow players! Only a month is left before the next major patch, so it's time to praise what a wonderful job the SE designers did with their graphical update of character faces. I'm not even talking about the faithful recreation of the "old" faces, but the unmatched graphical fidelity and artistic taste which were shown in the process.
I especially like the new face sculpt; it looks so natural.

BTW, one year and five months have passed since the DT launch. All these issues were noticed by players, and feedback was provided. Well, I'm quite sure that at least some of those issues will certainly be fixed in 8.0!
P.S. My poor girl still suffers from the bee sting on her lower lip. At least the upper lip was a little bit corrected; praise the Twelve.

As a side note, Warframe is also going to do the graphical update of their characters (it's massive; they redo everything, starting from face sculpts and ending with hairstyles). But, as I learnt from one of the podcasts, if a player logs in after the update, the prompt appears with an offer to preserve the "old" face.
Warframe isn't exactly a story-driven game with lots of cutscenes; surely, the game has its kind of MSQ, and it's quite good, but the story isn't the main focus. But even a horde shooter recognises the power of attachment which has been built for many years. I guess SE is just too cool to do the same. -

In my case, my main hyur in EU has improved since 7.0, so I'm okay playing her as a main now. Most of my alts are very dead though. I still can't stand my Au Ra alts or my female Viera, and some of my other hyurs.
From time to time, I still try to design new characters with the new graphics. Au Ra face 2 has become quite cute after the change, and might be my favourite now that face 1 has been brutally butchered. -

Still here but barely. I continue to feel luckier with my main in most regards but it doesn't make me dislike the fact that faces lost their character and consistency in art direction for the trade-off of better normal maps any less. Still massively dislike the changes to ♀ Highlander F2's eyes, ♀ Au Ra F2's lips, ♂ Midlander F4's lips, Auri limbal rings glowing as brightly as headlights no matter how dark the color is, and all the other little plastic surgery-esque adjustments that I can't be bothered to list off for the umpteenth time anymore.
The game is in an absolutely pitiful state so I basically don't play anymore, though. I'm only subbed for RP and PvP really, but genuine RP has stagnated hard because of the continued artificial congestion that has existed since Dawntrail attempting to funnel people into their unsuccessful fourth NA data center. As for everything else, job and combat design is so dreadful I can't stomach doing something as mind-numbing as dungeons anymore, nor do I care enough to raid these days. Population is so low that current cycle 24-man queues struggle to pop as soon as 10pm CST. It also doesn't help the RP side of things when quest writing treats the reader like a little idiot on average now and readily discards any intrigue built up from writers and lore creators past.
Bug reports (and I mean actual, undeniable bugs; not just questionable model changes) I've made several times and have gotten accepted into the "Planning to Address/Fix" section of the forums continue to remain in the game for over a year now. Every patch comes with an extra emergency maintenance for hotfixes. Constantly unaddressed DDoSing, lol.
It's genuinely pathetic for a game that people pay $12+ every month to play. To this day I still don't understand how so little gets addressed each patch, both for adjustments and actual bug fixes. It's a shame because this game and the characters it allowed me to create used to mean the world to me.
It'd be nice if they managed to address even one of these aspects for real by 7.4, however I'm expecting more of the same but with unrestricted glamours, so I'll probably have longer lapses in my sub again. I don't really have any hope for anything being given genuine care.
