Thancred's new face

Bumping (and I agree with the above post!)

It's been so awesome to see bits of feedback being addressed recently (like the Viera/Hrothgar hats, the glam changes, and the addition of the new hotbar panels)! I hope that the developers will also take our feedback about Thancred into account :)

Bump. Never stop fighting for Thancred's face to be restored.

thread bump. i'm still not giving up hope that this can be addressed in a way thats going to satisfy those of us who aren't happy with how he was updated.

Bumping to remind the devs to please, please, PLEASE, restore our favorite rogue's face to what it was!

It isn't that he looks BAD, it's that he doesn't look like Thancred anymore. Thancred's original model had a very unique face sculpt and those features were obliterated in the graphic update. It's very obvious if take a look at the side-by-side comparisons.

An excellent description of the issue, honestly. Thancred just doesn't look like himself anymore, and it's not right that so many other NPCs do while he ends up looking like a generic midlander. :(

Remove Hyur 1 face eye bags as well!!! It's tiresome really. Also I agree with Thancred's face.

also i agree with the eye bags. for some characters its quite fitting but on face 1 specifically, its quite jarring.

The patch notes have the line about NPC adjustments being made.

It looks likely that Ryne, Gaia, Gosetsu, and Zero have been updated as their gearsets are listed also.

Because Thancred's gear has already been upgraded, there's no way to tell if he is included. But we can always hope. Please listen to us, SE!

Sadly, I cannot see any changes to Thancred's face with patch 7.4 :(

I am not going to give up, though! Please keep fighting for this, everyone, this never should have happened and Thancred should get the update he deserves.

He definitely got the worst treatment of any Scion of the Dawntrail botox.

The point is in the extremely (and I mean what I estimate is a 0.01% chance) rare case that anyone meaningful at SE is actually reading these threads, I want them to see and know that not everyone supports them spending valuable time on such trivial matters. In fact I wish more people who opposed the idea would bother to post in here, even if it does mean it gets bumped back up, if anything it'll call out the fact that this is a bug that I figure about 1 out of every 100 people actually care about or even notice for that matter. The very tiny yet vocal few are all in this "room" as you say, so of course I'll get criticism for my views, but I rather that than SE get some false impression on how important this actually is. If they spend too much of their time tending to very small improvements to miniscule and very specific visuals, we get less in the game that actually improves replayability of content or inovation. Take from it what you will, call me out and get angry at me if you wish, but that's the simple fact of the matter - there is only so much time, so much development hours available and I much prefer SE put their focus on about 1000 other things before they waste their time on this.

Also the thread was already near the top so "bump" doesn't really qualify here XD

Workflow has priorities, if they think of a new innovative idea that needs to be done right now, they'll make the animators prioritize that. I graduated international business and art is my passion, while yes, the entire studio works together to put out content and they're all cogs of a machine, things that are important will take priority. Yes, this might not be a top priority, but I do think it should be looked into regardless.

Animators have nothing to do with Glamour Plates, Glamour Dresser, Server Stability..Animators are still getting paid for...y'know existing, they're hired already, they're not paid per animation/asset.

Though at this point, I think you're ragebaiting/trolling so I'll stop here.

If everything you say is accurate and their animators have nothing better to do than fix this type of thing, then they should hire less animators, or fire some of the existing ones to free up budget for more valuable portions of the game's development. Very simple. Also as a developer myself I can tell you with certainty that a bug that is absolutely tiny in terms of gameplay or visual impact can still be very time consuming or expensive in terms of hours needed to fix. You're tryingt o discredit my arguments based on oversimplification but you're guilty of the same. In any case, you're right this is just a waste of time, I've said my piece and hopefully SE will never waste their time or resources on this issue. That's my wish in any case, but in the end they'll be the ones to decide.

Why are you in a thread about a story character, if you don't actually pay attention to, or care about the story... Like... Lol, I mean you do you...

If you don't like or care about him, then it doesn't concern you. They're a massive company, and they have the means.

A bump to confirm people still want to see improvements here. The design of a character's face is important for their "acting" in story scenes, and the new DT look takes away a lot of contrast and definition from his features. In general facial acting looks quite bad on characters post graphics update, but since Thancred has both light skin and light hair, he suffers from both problems. In the old textures there was a shadow painted under his eyebrows that helped them "read," but that's gone, along with texture definition of the lips/nose. It makes the character seem colder and less intelligent.

He's a main character, so I don't understand why he hasn't gotten the same attention as other NPC graphic reworks. Maybe it's because he isn't appearing in MSQ recently, but there's the entire rest of the story he already appears in, isn't there?

Even if you don't like him, I wouldn't call this a minor issue. He's not some one-off NPC. He's an important character who appears frequently throughout the MSQ. The quality of his face is nowhere near the other NPCs, and even if he wer killed off tomorrow there's still ARR and five expansions to go through with him.

The devs have also spent time fixing actual minor issues, like the unrendered rock that appeared in Central Shroud. While a face is more difficult to fix than a rock, if they can fix a giant boulder then it would be nice to, at the very least, get an acknowledgement that his face is off.

Bumping for Thancred! It has been encouraging to see that the devs made changes to the Miqo'te Face 2 eyebrows, after another longstanding topic here on the forums. I hope that they will listen to us and that Thancred's face will eventually be addressed, too :)

I’m disappointed that it’s been so long and there’s been no change to his face… maybe in 7.5? I’ve been wanting to restart MSQ but I’m a little hesitant to do Ng+ if I have to sit through cutscenes where he looks strange and not like himself.

I just wish, since the graphics update changed features so much, that they could just add those new features as new options in addition to the old ones. Oh well. I hope the character creator gets expanded atleast. And with more body sliders.

Regarding thancred, i clearly see the difference and dont like it either. Especially the slimmer and rounder jaw.

Pre Dawntrail, Thancred was my miqote's husband.

Post Dawntrail, Thancred was replaced by a body snatcher.

Throwing in my support here. I have some hopes we'll see some changes eventually, now we have a grounding on how long these matters take to get seen to, and how the dev pipeline is structured. While I still have my own deep grievances with the player model upgrades, the recent NPCs to have had their graphics updated (Gaius, Aymeric, etc.) have all looked faithful and fantastic. Surely some time can be taken to upgrade Thancred in a faithful manner, too.

It's worth keeping this issue raised, same as with player models. It's fine if it doesn't impact you, and all the better for it, but these things do matter for many players.

He literally looks fine, I understand people wishing he could somehow be totally 100% identical, but I also feel like this is the type of thing where players put a lot of unnecessary pressure on the employees over at SE which then most likely impacts their work in more important areas of the game. I cannot imagine they just threw these faces together and didn't work hard to get it as close as possible but it's honestly a bit unreasonable to expect perfection and for the faces to be completely identical to before given how extensive some of these graphics upgrades have been on a technical level.

Honestly I don't know how some people would be able to handle playing games that have sequels where the characters don't look 100% identical to the version of themselves from 15 years ago, because none of them ever do and you almost never see anyone complain about it yet here we are, expecting that in FFXIV and yes I understand that this is not a sequel, but from a technical standpoint it may as have been.

You'd have a point if not for the fact that several other characters with unique faces look pretty much identical save for the updated graphics. See Aymeric, for example. He still looks like Aymeric, just updated with better graphics. They didn't change his entire face.

I would agree with you, had they not erased Thancred's face to something different- where the other characters got a glow-up and didn't have a face swap

I year of whining and some 30 pages+ all for a dude who's face is really just some 1s and 0s, but yes, SE please put all your focus onto "fixing" this guy's face, pull all monetary assets and budgeting away from content development, gameplay improvements, graphics performance improvements, stability, and just fix his face already. Better yet, give him an even better face, in fact let's let the community submit artistic renditions (PG of course) of what we want this guy to look like, and then SE just make him look like whatever one gets the most votes. Apparently this is not an MMO, it's an AI dating app so let's give 'em what they're yearning for, why not O.o

I understand the point in your post, but unfortunately this is exactly what has happened here.

Thancred had a unique facial sculpt before, but it was simply replaced with Midlander Face 1 - there was no time spent in trying to keep his unique facial features intact. He's never been a default Midlander, but now his face is 100% identical to a player face. It was pretty much the quickest way this could have been done.

As others have said, other NPCs such as the twins, Aymeric, Lyse, Yotsuyu, Ryne, and more have received faithful updates which keep their unique faces intact. Even if there might be slight changes (and there are), they are still very obviously the same characters. For those of us who care deeply about Thancred, he simply does not look the same anymore. If you check the first post and click the link, you can see some examples of these comparisons, and more information on the update as a whole and why it does not meet the expectations laid out at FanFest.

For a developer who works with these tools every day, I imagine this should not take long to fix and should not take lots of resource away from other issues. Thancred appears in many expansions and is a major character, and he is being treated with less care than characters who only appear in one expansion or have very minor roles.

Are you just trolling? Why are you mad about this? Its a main character that's pretty popular, ofc people are going to want him to look like he used to, and this not going to take The Entire Budget and every last man at square to fix.

Yes, all of their assets and budget towards content development and gameplay improvements, stability is all managed by ONE man, who could not handle a ninth job of fixing Thancred's face. This one man is also the janitor at SE HQ, because only one person works there!
