do people have look into stats weight, aka, which one of our stats is the most interesting to put materia in?
I say maybe Crit, Det, and Direct hit will be the three side stats that is valued since the Attack Speed buff already covers the attack speed boost. Though it will be difficult for players to choose between the three as the different combos benefit SAM with High DPS rate in different means.
Can someone make a proper rotation guide, this is garbage. And front page is never updated.
So far interesting theory on everything, thought I'd share what I'm doing :
Meikyou > Yukikaze > Kasha > Gekko > Hagakure
Hakaze > Jinpu > Guren > Gekko > Kaiten > Higanbana
Hakaze > Shifu > Kasha > Hakaze > Yukikaze
Hakaze > Jinpu > Gekko > Kaiten > Midare
A new thread should be made in all honesty. This thread wasmade to spur discussion about samurai before stormblood came out. It was never intended to be the goto place for all info samurai. There is some good info in this thread but for the most part its 90% speculation because we didnt have much info. You are free to open a new thread if you want.
As far as a rotation goes, samurai isnt really gonna have one. It will be a priority system at best.
Make sure you have speed buff, damage, and slash debuff (most likely in that order of priority). Use hagakure and guren on cooldown. Use shiten when you pool roughly 50 kenki or more other wise save your kenki for kaiten. Always have kaiten buffed higanbana up asap as long as it will go its entire duration. As long as you do all that your damage will be stellar
Yo dudes. 70 SAM here, and contributed to the following thread-
https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comme...ort=confidence
(Is Igshar Dervy? If so, his work for the DRG community is certainly appreciated here with SAM!)
So as a TL;DR to what I posted there, here's the absolute simplest form (not including the opener) of the SAM rotation:
Hakaze>Shifu>Kasha
Hakaze>Jinpu>Gekko
Hakaze>Yukikaze>Kaiten+Midare
Or... if you are more visual, that is unlocking Sen in a clockwise fashion (based on the Job gauge). If you start getting out of order for whatever reason, just prioritize getting out Midare, followed by refreshing buffs in the following priority: Speed>Damage>Slashing. Read the rest of my comment there for in-depth stuff, let me know if you guys want it posted here though.
SAM feels pretty good in end-game content so far. I would love to see what numbers it's capable of, though my initial thought is that they aren't too much more powerful than the other melee. I definitely feel that Jinpu should have stayed at 15% from the media tour build. Kaiten applying to Higanbana is hilarious, though, so I'll take it.
I am only at level 65, but I feel like I've experienced enough to finalize my thoughts about the job in general. So heres what I currently think of Samurai as it is for EA/Launch.
The Good:
The job is incredibly fun to play. Even when just out doing random sidequests, I'm still enjoying myself. This is in large part due to Midare Setsugekka being one of the most satisfying actions in the game, and its the primary Sen action you'll use before level 68, as well as most monsters living long enough for you to get one off on them every time.
The job is very straight-forward, and does not require expert techniques to perform well (though some will still help!). I'm refering to situations such as DRGs being heavy on double-weaving oGCDs, MNKs pre-Stormblood using Fracture as both part of their burst as well as for DoT management, or Ninja requiring high positioning skills.
What little utility the job has is generally seen as pointless, but it's still there and smart people will use them effectively. Our slashing debuff would help groups that don't have a WAR or NIN, which is uncommon, but not impossible. Feint will always be a good damage reduction for raid-wide AoEs and tank busters that are physical. Our high damage output makes targetted damage buffs such as Balance cards, and DRGs new damage up link ability, shine brighter.
Our AoE capability is probably the strongest out of all the melee jobs currently. The TP costs may be high, but weaving in Tenka Goken and Gekko combos help to mitigate that.
The A E S T H E T I C S of the job are great. The actions have very nice animations, the katanas are designed so that the sheath is different for every weapon, and the weight behind our hardest hitting attacks is noticable and enjoyable. Also, as a part-time weeb, I appreciate the names and themes throughout the job.
The Bad:
Our defensive capabilites are quite low compared to the other melee. Our only natural defense is Third Eye and Merciful Eyes, both of which are very weak. We have to rely heavily on Bloodbath and Second Wind.
It remains to be seen how utility-focused the community and raid scene will be in Stormblood. Should it remain similar to where it was in Heavensward, our high damage output might still not be enough for some players.
The selling point of the job from the initial media showings was Midare Setsugekka, our hardest-hitting single target attack. Yet the most optimal play for the job is actually Hissatsu: Shinten, and a primary means of getting more Shintens off is using Sen with Hagakure, over Midare Setsugekka. This is a trivial complaint, I know, but learning of this slightly dampened my excitement for the job.
Overall, this has been the most enjoyable melee job I've played (compared to the other three pre-Stormblood) and I'm glad to have made the switch. I look forward to experiencing the rest of this expansion with it.
So trying to figure out what is the best method to level a Samurai from 50 to 60 so I can main one in the expansion? Thanks for any replies, this is my forst time trying to play DPS in just about any MMO as i always play a tank and just want to do something different for a change and I really like how this combo system works.
Can't wait until I hit 70, feels really good at 65. Not too difficult to play, just takes getting used to.

For those who would like to follow along, see how it looks and such. Forgot to cut it off at a good time, but whatever.
Ask questions if you have any!
Am I the only one who's in love with the Samurai's animations? The moon shape of Gekko, the flowing Sakura petals of Kasha, the ice that forms beneath your feet as you prepare Midare.
It's really beautiful to look at.
I'm getting better with practise... also button mashing too. I really like how it goes now. Enjoying this Sam while it last. Sure next patch or next next patch... thing will change and nerfed. The usual SE pattern even though Yoshida say it suppose to be a powerful dps.
Nope! I've been loving the animations since I first picked up SAM at the beginning of early access. Makes it that much more enjoyable to play. :-)
Only level 58 currently so I have a fair amount of skills to learn and adapt to yet, but so far it's been a fun change of pace since I've been mostly playing my AST before SAM was available.
How much Kenki do u generate per ws from Kenki Mastery 2?
I'm feeling very squishy whilst leveling so far. This may just be POTD, but even a bit in the open world, I seem to be eaten alive sometimes. And yes, I use Third Eye very liberally.
Also, how have you guys set up your HUDs now for SB?
Can someone tell me the Statpriority and Materia i should use for Sam?
Just wait until Hagakure and Guren.

I'm feeling squishy as fuck while leveling. Especially casters, is that just me?
Well I have never bothered to run POTD, so I have been doing that today and my god is this a slog. I have not even leveled up once and i have ran floors 1-10 3 times this morning just to get the Aether levels up to 3. This is why I have given up leveling a new job every time and just go back to a Paladin. There really needs to be a less horrendous way to level up a new job.
I don't feel like this. Third Eye and Merciful Eyes are pretty weak, but they're up very often.
Second Wind is still the main melee go-to healc and I have max-potions from spamming Palace of the Dead.
Leg Sweep isn't bad for some breathing room but overall most things simply die before being a threat.
There's no reason to pull many mobs in the overworld and instances have a tank unless POTD.
POTD was no issue for me at all either and I usually end up tanking most of the time.
While leveling I've taken Bloodbath and it's really hard to die once that is up because our damage is so good already.
If anything I would say Samurai is more tanky than my previous main - MNK.
They have more tools that don't reduce damage (unlike Fist of Earth) and more burst healing from Bloodbath.
Once you pass floor 50, it's basically a checkpoint. Resetting after allows you to start at Floor 1 or Floor 51, and 51-60 gives a lot more xp and you start off as level 60 (2 button spams make the lower floors really tedious).
I did it with 2 friends (separately) recently for their first times in POTD and they only needed to reset twice each to get enough to keep going. Both went all the way to 50 with just that and I don't think they were particularly lucky. Getting out of the first half is the most important thing to make POTD bearable.
Also, roulettes are still great (leveling roulette is the single most efficient exp reward). And if you really don't like POTD, fate farming is good xp. Leves aren't great but you can use them to break the monotony once in a while if you don't need them for crafting/gathering.
To put it generally, SAM "main" damage comes from 2 Source, Iaijutsu (building Sen/ GCD skills) and from Kenki (off GCD skills). on the start, you will learn on how to build Sen, as there are 3 combos. each combos has buff/debuff that you want to keep at all times. Then later the Kenki gauge unlock with the spender skills. The complexity of SAM is on how to build Sen efficiently while building/spending Kenki, as you cant neglect one or the other to maximise DPS
Every class takes the same amount damage pretty much in PotD depending on the aetherpool armor. I never really felt like I was going to die with 99/99 aetherpool unless something dumb happened.
However, overworld mobs in SB areas hurt like hell even with ilvl 260+ gear. You definitely CANNOT fight more than one at a time even with a chocobo out.
I mean, you can but it can get scary. There was one particular area where I was doing a fate solo with 64 mobs and 66 caster mobs spawning nearby that I had to run for a moment from but that was the other one. other than that if you bloodbath and can dot more than one target assuming health lasts a long time. I took bloodbath and second wind for early leveling, then dropped second wind later on and was too lazy to put it back. There were times I missed it but I never died for want of it, even during the occasional 2-3 mob pull. Let me state for the record I never intentionally pulled more than one mob, but if it happened, it happened and you could deal with it.
Will someone please do the community a favor and create a thread for Samurai, where you can have the optimal rotation discussion , tips, guides etc... like you have for all the other jobs
I would do so, but i lack the time or knowledge to do so, and Sam deserves its spot
Anyone know perfect Hagakure usage? I do not mean in the opener but in general.
While Hissatsu: Guren is worth 16 potency per Kenki (single target), Kaiten: Midare Setsugekka (worth 80 Kenki) is 13.5 potency per Kenki. It's clearly worth it to pay for a Guren. However, Shinten is worth only 12 so it might not be worth it to just Shinten more.
Taking the difference that Midare costs a gcd while Shinten doesn't might favor the latter making Hagakure always worth using. But I'm not a real theorycrafter to calculate that so it'd be great if anyone else has figured this out.
Is Hagakure only worth using when needed to perform the more efficient spenders (Kaiten: Higanbana or Hissatsu:Guren) or is it always worth it?
(I do see some math in the earlier part of this thread favoring the latter - always use Hagakure, but I'd still like confirmation since there was disagreement about it)
Anybody figure out a good opener yet for starting with zero sen and zero kenki? So far I have been going
Hakaze > jinpu > gekko > (kaiten) > higanbana > (Meikyo) > gekko > shifu > kasha > Hakaze > (shinten) > Yukikaze > (Hakagure) > Hakaze > (guren) then continuing from there with the jinpu combo. Would like to know if anybody has anything definitive yet.

Under construction.
Whew. I thought it was just me.
I had a MSQ where I have to defeat these refugees in order to convince them that going up against the Brass Blades was suicide. My chocobo was in the stables, so I was by myself.
But hey, I was a samurai and these were poorly trained peasants. How hard could it be?
I died three times.
On a lark, I switched to my white mage job and walked through the quest with no problem at all. To say I was a bit bummed would be an understatement. Wondered if I should try playing a damage dealer at all. :(
So, I am heartened to read other players feel samurai are squishy. They are nothing like how they are portrayed in the trailers.
