Au Ra physiology and other lore.

I imagine the Horns would both be very hard and have an outer 'dead' layer that acted as a sheath to protect the auditory nerves. Otherwise they would be extremely impractical.

It's worth considering they don't put armour over their horns which might mean nothing but in this game races with pointy ears do have armour for those ears on head gear, something which after seeing it I realised was a actually extremely smart. Just having them poking up through a helmet would just be asking for them to get cut off. The lack of armour on Au Ra horns makes me feel that their horns are actually very durable.

They could serve in much the same way as a human's (or other mammal's) outer ear. Our outer ear just sort of channels sound vibrations, directing them towards the inner ear where the eardrum registers them. Figure there's a tiny ear hole right at the base of the horn...er, cranial projection and the projection just channels sound towards it. If it channels sound more effectively than our own outer ear, it could be associated with enhanced hearing. (I don't have a theory yet about the enhanced spatial recognition, though.)

I'm thinking the Horns are more of an echolocation thing than their actual ears. I'm willing to bet they have proper Humanoid Ears (Maybe pointy maybe not) and the Horns act as an extrasensory "Vibration" detector. Like how the concept of the Aura works in Pokemon. Lucario closes its eyes and focuses and uses a super-sensory sixth sense.

Also since I brought it up I sort of wonder at the difference in scale colors, generally what has attributed to current differences in subraces has been their territorial habits at work(seekers and keepers, mid and highlanders ect) so what could have happened to make their scales become their current color.. I wonder if maybe xaela scales are harder or thicker because of their warlike nature, or if the vivid black is like a "warning" color

While I would say the darker scales could be a whole nomad-in-the-sun thing, their skintones do not reflect this...
Also wondering if one subrace will have longer tails like the Miqo'te do.

AS for earrings on horns, who knows?! I was wondering the same thing.

It be pretty gruesome if you ask me if they dehorn their own kind as a mark of shame like how the Amish would shave the people in their community if they did something they don't like and yes its a hate crime.

I'm not sure how much we can correlate real world horns to what the Au Ra have. The description actually distinguishes them with a different term at one point, where it says "enhanced hearing and spatial recognition granted by an Au Ra's cranial projections (traits not attributed to draconian horns)". Of course, it's not entirely consistent about that, as earlier in the same paragraph it says "The curved horns and beautifully patterned scales that characterize the Au Ra ..."

Not entirely clear, but it sounds as though what the Au Ra have look like horns and can therefore be colloquially referred to as "horns", but in a strict biological sense are something distinct from genuine horns.

I think they're still just horns, but they just wanted to make a clear distinction specifically between their horns and dragons' horns.

So I see the forum got the naming convention threads condensed into a single post ... does this mean we're finally going to get the damn Auri naming conventions this weekend? Not sure why they're holding it back. :(

If the benchmark has the random name thingy in it (can't remember if the original one asks for a character name) then that'd show us the types of names we might see, they may want to show it off there first and then give us the conventions that behind those names to increase the hype factor around the benchmark.

My guess is that the Au Ra Naming Conventions will be released within a day of the Benchmark.

Benchmark is coming on Monday the 27th for the record (officially confirmed at the Niconico thing).

Yeah I'm expecting the naming conventions around when the Benchmark is released. Which, being soon™, is a good thing. Have names thought up for my Raen already, just need to know if they fit into the conventions.

Man, some of those Xaela eyes are kind of unsettling...

Am I the only one who is bothered by the way the horns sit? They look like they have been placed on top of the character rather than protruding through the hair. It was the same thing for Yugiri in her cameo.

It only looks that way, the horns come out of the side of the head like ---| <--this more or less so it seems like the aren't attached, its more obvious when looking at it from a proper angle

If that's the case, that's quite disappointing; I was under the impression that they'd be more customizable than that.

I noticed this in the benchmark trailer, but it appears that the 4 types of horns we've seen so far are the only types and are available on both genders and subraces.

It might not always be this way however, it has been said that the initial benchmark will be somewhat limited, and that they plan to update it in the future, changing horn styles may come closer to launch, or there may just be several different horn styles attached to each face like they do with elezen/lala.

I hope so, but I doubt it. I'm far too picky about faces and a couple of the female horn styles are really unattractive. I don't want to have to settle for attractive horns and meh face or attractive face and meh horns. Either way, there's nothing I'll be able to tell until I can play with the benchmark myself tomorrow night.
Either way, I'm pretty sure they meant the limitations were the amount of options like hairstyle or paint or such. I'd be happy to be proven wrong, though.

I'm pretty sure they said in the Nico event that they managed to finish the Au Ra character creation after all so it's not limited.

On another note, extremely annoyed and disappointed about the naming conventions not coming for another friggin month. Why the wait?

I think that option is just the face types menu. The Screenshot with the 4 that I assume you are referring to just says face types. They've shown off at least 5 different types on various faces. We'll see soon.

I'm assuming its cause they know people want to reserve names for their characters so they are trying to wait as long as they can so we don't all make a bunch of alts as placeholders.

At least we know a bit about them though, one is very Doman style (Japanese) & the other is nomadic so they use the naming conventions around them. So you could have one with a miqote style name or hyur.

If that's so, that's relieving. I can't read the text because it's too small and my eyes aren't so good so I'm just going off the little thumbnails. ;w;

I love on the bottom it's showing you can have the inner iris and outer iris a different color, instead I guess of the current ability to have different left and right irises.

I am wondering if the ability to have a sparkle in the eye isan option because sometimes there is a shine and other times there is not. And without it the eyes look dead.

edit- hoping some of those new hairstyles will be available on other races too! I am glad to see the old race hairstyles available as well.

Regarding the horn and face connection, if you look at the earlier renders of Au Ra, there are different combinations of faces and horns (males on their own have two or three faces shown with one horn style). It's doubtful that they would make them exclusive to each other now, so I wouldn't worry about that.

That is very nice! My friend is trying to do the same, though to the farthest degree. She's actually quite livid over the choices of mostly typical beauty, though there's also years of pent up inner sighing at an industry that's full of typical beauties.
