Big Fish and you: What bait is needed when to land the big one

Hey guys,

my English is not perfect, but I wanted to thank you for this great thread. Helped me out a litte :).

Allow me to ask two questions:

1. Is there any Off-Hand for the fisher? Cause this document says so....

2. I managed to overmeld my equip, here's my charakter at lodestone.
I have Gathering 310 and Perception 256. Thats the maximum I guess without bufffood and I don't think my fc will activate any fc-buffs.
So is this enough to catch Silver Soveraigns at HQ? I really dont know how to get them. You need to trade 20 of them for the new equip, but you need the new equip to get them? arrg......

1. There is no offhand. It's likely the author of that document just copy-pasted the gear stats from miner/botanist. Funfact: in 1.0 fishers had militia gigs which let us go "spearfishing." Basically you'd click on a small patch of grass near water and would get a thing. Usually dye.

2. That's enough for silver sovereigns. Eat some food when you go, but with that you should be fine. Warning though, it takes a while to get them all regardless of your stats. Best of luck!

i was at 304 gathering and it said i needed higher, when i hit 308 i was high enough but it escaped me 4 times i would suggest 310+ for this fish

I suggest you get your forager's fishing rod before attempting to catch any big fish to be honest. Some fish require 337+ gathering to catch which is hard to do without the rod.

thanks im 4 away from rod right now. alternating between sovereigns and umbrals. sooooo close

Ughh may I ask if anyone has any tips for the Slime King? I've been stuck on this fish for about 2 rl weeks now with 364 gathering but it seems to... slip away every time I hook it. Is it true that it can be caught during cloudy weather too? That would make this a lot easier considering how rare the right weather and time seems to be.

Same here, can't get the Slime King. I try during night with foggy weather using Crayfish balls. I am fishing with 372 Gathering and 297 Perception. Still, 100% of the time all I read is "The fish got away". There are also fish that "only" Need 301 Gathering but still I read that. Are some of the capital fishes special in the chance they can escape?

Slime King - Crayfish Ball - 5 pm to 12 am - Dust Storm (or) Cloud ..... It may be possible that you are hooking an HQ Slime King which needs a lot more "luck" than an NQ. Keep trying. PS ... If you catch it in Fog, please let us know.

Yeah... there's something fishy about this one. I finally got it last night during foggy weather but I was confused for the longest time about it since the disciples of the land database listed it as only appearing in sandstorm. So yeah, it's both weathers. Best of luck to you though TomTom, hang in there. :D

^^ I will, I will. Am 1 fish away from the "catch 16 big fish" ingame achievement and over time, the rest will be cleared as well. Last week I finally got my 70 fishing rod and have started to catch the big ones since this. I had all the normal fish before anyways, now I want them all. :D The only thing I don't like about capital fish is that they are 0 help to get my other ingame achievements "fish 500 on locations Level x - y) since they are ALL very low in level.

And Yeah, if I catch one in a condition that's not already mentioned in this thread, I will post about it.

How do I get my Gathering up to 300? I've got all green gear on the right and miscellaneous pieces on the left. High grade materia won't boost it that high, help please.....it's all lvl 50 green too

I had over 300 already before I got my Item Level 70 accessoires. Maybe you do not have enough melds per item?

Just wanna congratulate on the summarize OP made here. Don't know if you remember me, but I still remember you. :)

Anyhoo... just recently capped my fisher, about 3 days ago. Finished the big fish quest 1 day later. Currently farming silver sovereign HQ for i70 rod, sitting at 11/20 atm. The "suspicious fish" warning kinda get annoying though, even had to run to other fishing spot to trick-reset. :3

Got a question though: Do any of you keep your big fishes, or NPC it? Seems from market study that ppl rarely buy these since these are currently for achievement purpose only. That, and my current space arrangement (including retainers) won't be enough to keep all of them. ^^;

Of course I remember you :D. I don't know about others, but I tend to hoard every fish I catch. Yay extra retainers I guess.

I've been hanging on to all of my single- and double-star fish, anticipating the possibility that SE might make them useful someday. And, apparently, when SE adds Desynthesis to the game, some fish will be desynthable, so that day may come sooner than later. It's up to you, though, whether it's worthwhile to spend the inventory slots for such a purpose. If you do decide to sell them, you might want to check out the auction house, especially just before and after the 2.3 patch arrives - there will likely be a rush on desynthable fish, in the hopes of figuring out which ones will provide useful and/or rare ingredients when you desynth them.

This might be quite a dilemma though. I just hope SE doesn't implements something like aquarium. lol

And this is exactly why I gave in and got my 3rd retainer. Literally, 60% of that retainer is just fish and lures/bait lol. My retainer is basically the long awaited tackle box we'll probably never get (´・ω・`)

Gods, I'm dying for a tacklebox. All I can hope is that "fish desynthing" is the return of fish --> shards that most of us 1.0ers probably want.

So far I kept all my capital fish (minus the two I had to return for the quest) hoping that with the next patch, there will be new quests which I can either complete directly or at least make some money by selling the fish I already have. But desynthesis could be another way to go..depends what will come out of these 2 star beasts. ;)

Got an update for the front page: I just caught Blue Widow in Murmur Rills, North Shroud, with only 338 Gathering skill. Front page lists 341+. Was at roughly 10:00 am during rainy weather.

Another update: I caught a Judgeray at Fallgourd Float with 344 Gathering. Front page lists 350+. Was at 6:30 pm during foggy weather.
Also: Caught Dark Ambusher at Sweetbloom Pier with 344 Gathering. Front page lists 350+. Was at 12:20 am during foggy weather, mooched from Striped Goby.

Halcyon Rod Supra (FSH i75)

To obtain these you need to collect 3 Olgoi-Khorkoi (FSH) each also with 10 "Fieldcraft Demi-Materia III".

Once this is done, you receive a token from Talon in Mor Dhona. You then need to trade this token in, along with the AF tool (Halcyon Rod) and 1 "Mastercraft Demimateria" to receive the new i75 Supra tool.

There is a new Dodore Survival Belt (HQ) out that has 16 Perception, and you can meld on 4 GP, 4 Gathering and 3 Perception. This is only a gain of 1 Gathering and 3 Perception over the Raptorskin Survival Belt. For those of us who are already near max melded, it's not really worth it to buy the new belt and redo the melds, but if you are getting these items for the first time, you might want to consider the newer belt.
