The release date - for all we know - is likely the same scenario, since SquareEnix probably expected FFXIV to grow like FFXI did. Not to mention, most of the feedback during closed beta was completely different from what we're seeing on these forums. There was no way they could've known over 70 percent of FFXI players would be in on this game.
Tanaka was involved in the development of Final Fantasy 1, 2, and 3. Since Final Fantasy games started to suck more and more since Final Fantasy 4, I strongly support Tanaka's efforts to design something different. I had no issues with this game when it came out other than the performance and controls. I'm willing to bet that if SquareEnix re-released FFXI with updated graphics/interface/controls and abandoned the PS2, people would flock back to that game right away.
Don't say I'm wrong. You all want to go back to FFXI. And I don't blame ANY OF YOU for not doing so because of the interface/controls.
