After playing the game for thousands of hours, I've come to the realization that the only real reason why I still play it is because I love my character and I want to see what happens next in the MSQ.
I'm currently not subbed to the game, but I'll gladly come back for patch-day every time to see the story, talk with other people about it and make theories. I feel like this is the most healthy way I can enjoy the game at this point.
The gameplay itself is not enough to keep me playing long after I've finished MSQ, but maybe that is natural after the many hours of enjoyment I've already had.
I think if the devs want to capture long time players with gameplay, they'd have to do something pretty crazy, which transforms the game in exciting ways. I don't know if they can do that, but I've come to terms with it.
With that said: 7.2 made me really hopeful for the story, and as long as that continues, I'm personally satisfied.

I only cancel my sub if i have financial problems or am burned out. There are other things to do in life then jsut ffxiv. I have an FC and we all get burned out on raiding teh same boss for weeks on end for mounts, we do maps, joke around, even do dailies together and fuck around
