Perhaps you lived a privileged life in that regard, but some of us grew up without any idols or people to look after in media (especially when raised by very conservative people), together with suffering all sorts of violence, even from within our families. That's exactly why representation is important.
I constantly see variations of the expression "it should happen when it makes sense". But when it would make sense? If sexuality shouldn't matter, then what's the paramenter to decide between what kind of relationship is portrayed when one is due to appear? This applies to any kind of minority being represented.
Forced representation is not good and it is disingenuous. Allow it to come naturally through the sequence of events that follow in the story, or allow the hunts to be subtle and interpretive, or don't have it happen at all, IMO
It shouldn't really feel forced into the story., subtleties such as that with the Steadfast Companion and the Blundering Treasure Hunter are nice, as is the Rising vendor NPC. - They shouldn't need to force it on peoples' faces because bothering to learn about the world and its inhabitants is too difficult.
When it's subtle you get people arguing you're reading too much into it, when it's not, people completely lose their minds over "forced representation". There truly is no winning with some of you...
Diversity and inclusivity are very important core values here at the Weeaboo Police Department. That is why we have established a hiring policy that does not discriminate against any of our applicants based on their race, gender, or sexual orientation.
Keep the wind in your sails.
I remember when I used to ship characters like this. I was young and spry. Then I got older and realized men can have a friendly rivalry without them wanting to hold hands.
I haven't played XVI, but that sounds a lot like what they did with Emil and Kaine in the first Nier, you can pick on the signals here and there, yet, that's not who they are. Emil's kindness and care for his friends is what make him such a endearing character, and Kaine's strong and sometimes harsh attitude while still being obviously caring is what made her such a memorable character.
