That sucks.
Well another good suggestion would be to ensure that any Unique/Untradeable item cannot be sold to NPC.

I was about to suggest this, glad I read through the thread first. But definitely, all items that are of this nature (That sell for 1G naturally.) should be marked as "NO SALE" in your inventory. Example:
Random Object ------------- 1,000G
Random Armor -------------- 2,225G
U/U Item ----------------- NO SALE
Another Random Object ------- 355G
U/U Armor ---------------- NO SALE
And so on. Alternative is to make it so when you go to sell items it can be sorted into 3 categories: Equipment, Consumables, All Items. Choosing Equipment filters all items from the sell menu leaving only armor, weapons, accessories/jewelry. If you choose Consumables it hides all equipment leaving only consumable items and monster parts/drops. Using All Items would show everything your inventory contains. This might be the default filter applied. Of course all unique/untradable items will not appear in a list when selling regardless of filter used. When choosing to throw away items there will be a second menu confirmation required. For those who feel it's unnecessary for these steps a command would exist to toggle this feature off.
By doing something like this one cannot complain if they accidentally chucked out an item. The option to seek a double confirmation for those items exists, they chose to turn it off themselves.
EDIT: I can't believe how many changes I had to do to this post alone. >.> I'm not all there tonight.
They should do what they did in FFXI... They let you have the privilege to have one item which you drop to return to you into the mailbox and in ffxiv's case be back in your inventory
Edit: As in One item for ur whole FFXIV career for that one character
You know, now that I think about it, FFXI did have that prompt when you tried to sell RARE items, it was a "are you sure" type message.
I really do feel for you, it sucks to loose an item, I do agree that there should be a buyback or a full implementation of item restore, but as the game is right now, I am sure that even doing something simple like that is chaotic and is most likely why GMs wont do it right now.
Not necessarily the case though -- XIV is very much in development so there's the possibility nothing can be done just yet given how they're constantly changing stuff regarding the game's item structure?
XI is well past foundation changes, so maybe there's nothing they can do just yet in regards to item recovery of this nature, so while it is the same company, the game's are in different states and of different development natures -- The only thing I can think of is rolling back your character's data to a certain point but that's usually something normal GMs don't do in MMOs unless there's corruption.
People complain about extra menus and confirmation prompts, though.
Poor you.
No buy back is such a pain... I wish SE will implement this feature too ( just 5 or 10 recent sell items is fine )
But i'm sure it hard to implement since the data structure is too messy.
This has been exactly my experience! Exactly precisely. In fact...
There is no doubt in my mind that a buy back feature would be absolutely awesome, but the people arguing that other mmos have GMs waiting around to assist you in reversing your mistakes by rolling back character data are relating a reality that is not consistent with my experiences.
Typical GM's being absolute useless in every way possible. Dont even know why they have a job.
Ohhhh no, I am so sorry BUT I am pretty sure they will implement this buy back service sooner or later. I swear to god you are not the only one who has made a similar mistake (or will do in the future) and SE would start getting so much grief if you wouldn't be able to get rare/ex items back that you have accidenlty dropped.
Make achievment items 0 value (or non sellable) and people wouldnt even abuse this system...
Well that's about 76.954941185713163401586950156052 times worse than what happened to me a while back. Or would be if gil wasn't so much easier to obtain back then. But still worse I bet. And yes, I did use Calculator.
I was running in the markets and hit my turbo button.
Select retainer, select item, purchase.
They made such a big deal about ~5K and preventing people from accidentally boarding an airship and yet have the default position for grouped and unstackable items set to confirm. That could end up being your whole piggy bank right there! Why was that not fixed?!
I should start leaving the better portion of my coin with my retainer! w
