I guess that's why getting the civil-rights bills passed took so long. If White Person 1 said "I hate black people." White person 2 had sit there in silence and just hope that someone of color would walk into the room, confront White Person 1 so that White Person 2 could stand behind them and say "I agree"

As I said earlier, Iv never been insulted when straight political and religious leaders, people in the Entertainment Industry with a large platform, or even just regular people teaching their children have voiced their support for LGBT equality.

When that happens, I guarantee no LGBT person thought the supportive straight person should keep their mouth shut.

I tend to see the big picture tho. As in the United States. Not the Divided States, where every group only looks after their own.

Just from skimming, it seems people on the thread are more upset that OP is saying war bonnets/head-dresses/tribal attire are racist/inconsiderate, when at least two people of Native heritage have said specifically that they don't care, and are actually excited to wear the gear and represent their culture; and when people have specifically stated that the gear in question has very few RL tribal features outside of the "vibrant colors, feathers, bead necklace" to tie it into a specific tribe (as evidenced by people asking for the OP to say which Native tribe it is offensive to).

Not gonna mention the points brought up by a few stating that the inclusion of Korean/Chinese/Japanese/Persian/Romani attire did not bring up this kind of thread, when each group has suffered hardships.

They could always research how and why specifically and then offer it as a reward from the Vanuvanu, Amalja, or Ixali something.

You can point it out how much you want. Don't make them your token. It's intellectually demeaning to both sides.

It doesn't change anything. We were all raised differently -- some intimate with our people's beliefs, or some who were born urban-indigenous in a society that's not quite familiar with the teachings. Heck, even at this point many of our elders or teachers are simply dead and that knowledge is lost.

My people's regalia isn't your costume.

This comes under a degree of respect - something I'd hope that people in this thread might stop to consider. The importance of the war bonnet to many First Nations, or American-Indian peoples is quite significant. As much as I can summarize it the war bonnet, and even the earning of feathers, is used to mark significant points of your life and contributions to your people. For example, the bonnet is often used to denote a position of leadership amongst our people which is often synonymous between our elders. They're awarded to soldiers or survivors (such as those who made it through the residential school). There is a heavy degree of spirituality associated with it.

Now, all that said. We're particularly resilient beyond the fact. The bonnet, or really, any headdress is routinely used as a costume in Halloween or Thanksgiving. It gets quite a bit frustrating, seeing the colonizer and people responsible for a good deal of suffering yet unaddressed taking a particularly important piece of our heritage and then popping it up as a quest reward or something you can buy in their store. I totally understand where some people might have grievances, and I agree. For the remainder, if you want to wear this, at least acknowledge it. Don't be so callous in disregarding people's concerns about this becoming a quest item. I've seen quite a few comments like that already.

All they're saying is until we know how actual Native Americans feel about this, (and the few that we know have responded see it as no big deal it seems) then it's kind of silly to get offended on their behalf if you're not Native American. This isn't a case of sticking up for someones civil rights or anything, it's about if the object has enough religious or cultural meaning to warrant its removal, and quite frankly no one has a real say in that except for someone of that culture.

It's okay as a non-Native American to bring the problem up, but you can't speak FOR them. Instead, OP probably should have said something like:

"From my understanding war bonnets are an important part of NA culture, and I was wondering if any NAs could share their opinion on its inclusion as it seems like it could become an issue to me."

There, now she's both pointed out the possible problem, but has created a proper forum for people actually relevant to the problem to speak.

This deserves to be quoted again, as the most legitimate response to the OP's post.

The costume is not used to mock or offend, so this is just another case of someone being offended because he or she simply chose to be offended.

I think what has people upset is that the argument implies that if you don't think it wrong, then you must be racist yourself. And so they are responding in aggressive defense.

Now I myself do not find it racist. As I said in my first post on the thread "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" The only thing I can think of that would make offensive, is if the tied it with the Golden Saucer. To make like an Indian Casino reference.
