no it dont have to be f2p to have a cash shop.

An issue with it being "just vanity/cosmetic items" is that there are people who would want those vanity/cosmetic items. And if they do - presuming those items are exclusive to the cash shop, and can't be obtained by playing the game (quests etc) - then those people would basically incur a higher cost to play and enjoy the game as they want than others do... which makes it a bit unfair, in my opinion.
The people who couldn't care less about vanity/cosmetic items will continue to pay their sub fee and that's that. Those who would like to have those cosmetic items would have to pay their sub fee, plus however much the items cost... or do without them.
Even as someone who isn't interested in vanity items myself and wouldn't be affected personally, I'm not okay with that.
It really irks me when I see people say "Well, as long as it's vanity items that I'm not interested in, I don't see a problem with it. Let the devs get some extra money". I haven't seen that specific statement here yet (though I haven't read all the posts yet either :-p), but I've seen it a lot in other MMO communities regarding this topic. The blatant and shameless hypocrisy of it is amazing to me. "It's okay to charge others for stuff... as long as it's nothing I want". Amazing.
Another argument I see come up a lot is, "If you don't want to spend the money on those items, then just don't buy them." Fine. However, the bigger point is.. why should anyone be required to spend extra money to get them at all? Especially since SE will already be getting a monthly fee from us.
I think it's much better to just have the items in the game, included with the same fee everyone pays, and let those who want those items participate in the content required to obtain them... even if it means spending gil to buy it off the market. Let those items remain available by simply playing the game.
There's something very "wrong" about the idea of being charged extra for resources that are already created and available in the game that you're already paying for.
To that end, I say hell no to a cash shop.
cash shop for the crysta currency. i think people wont mind getting some cool fashion clothing, guardian aspect, or a nice supply of hi-potions, different hair styles and color... i mean those are stuff i dont mind using cash shop for.
Or... they could not add cash shop items in the first place, and let everyone's box+sub fees get them access to everything in the game... by actually playing it.
If everyone's buying the game and paying the same base sub fee, then everyone should have access to the same content. No one should be required to pay more than another player because they would like to have something - vanity or not - that another player doesn't.
That said, it's nice to see the majority of people here against it.
cash shop ? Sorry But , Fair enough you ask the Question. I think Definately not. We dont need this and its not a good idea and I hope It never becomes part of XIV.
There are two major snags with me when it comes to trying to make real money transactions like that.
The first is segregation. There becomes a social stigma between cash shop and non-cash shop users. It splits the players of any community rather cleanly to give any sort of advantage, even a cosmetic one, to those who are willing to pay more real life dollars.
The second is balancing. A game really has to be designed from the ground up for such transactions for it not to seem tacked on and... well tacky. This includes finding an in-game currency method for players to access the same content.
Final Fantasy XIV doesn't fit this model from both issues in my view. It supports comradeship, not separation. And Square Enix's hard stance against Real Money Trading in MMOs have really set the tone against any sort of 'paid premium' content.
Looking at it reasonably, there's no real point on the player's behalf for FFXIV to have it. It'd just clash on so many levels.
And from my personal opinion, I'd hate to have it in this game.
Excellent point.
The only one to benefit from addition of cash shop items - vanity or otherwise - is SE.
People who would like to have those items will have to spend more money than they'd have to otherwise. They could simply be acquiring those items via a quest, a NPC vendor, a crafted item, etc.
Those who wouldn't want those items wouldn't be affected either way.
The only one who stands to be affected positively would be SE.
Hellzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz NO!
Cash is for F2P games ... we already [will] pay a fee for this game so No thanks x10000
