It's not necessarily the case. That notation is mostly for the website and its contributors to cover their asses. All crosses I've done have been two-way and it very well may be the case but since the people submitting haven't gotten seeds from both plants in that particular combination it's far safer for them to not make assumptions and mark it as a one-way cross as that is the result of their experimentation and potentially incomplete information is better than incorrect information.

[Broombush / almond / sylkis ] is this the best self sustaining combo for thavn onion? I'm trying to maximize my only garden...

It is definitely my preferred combo, but I suppose that [Jute / Mandrake / not-sure-which-chocobofood ] would work much in the same way.
These are easiest because mandrake/almonds can be harvested and are thus in limitless supply, as opposed to the evil known as Apricot Kernels.

That would be Jute / Mandrake / Mimett Gourd.

Using Glazenuts for Thav onions isn't that bad at all to be honest. Glazenuts + Tier 2 Chocobo food will either make an onion or apricot kernals so either way it's something you need whereas failing to get an Onion with the above loops gets you fairly useless Shroud Tea.

I didn't know the loop can produce apricots....that makes it a lot more interesting.

every food except krakka seems to work

No, you need t2 Food to produce onions. Aka Sylkis, Mimett, Phasana, etc. Some of them cross both ways with a chance on 8 seeds per patch, others don't. So do some research before you plant ^^

Haven't seen that particular combination attempted, but similar combinations gave King Tomato minions instead of onions.

Yea the only real problem you can run into is if you get less than 4 apricot kernals and you have to restock... but that means you got 5+ Thavnarian onions which is worth it =P

I edited my post to avoid confusion. You can not get Thavnairian Onions with Krakka Root or Gyshal Greens. It has to be tier 2 food, the ones that give a buff to your chocobo when fed in the stables or fed out on the field.
