What is with the constant mistreatment of the Garlean story?(6.1 Patch spoilers)

I'd like whatever drugs you're having to think the story is going to get as silly as Hildibrand. A few scenes sprinkled here and there over multiple quests to lighten the mood, yes. But nothing as over the top as Hildibrand.

It was really odd that Gridaina was so willing to open their borders with Ally McMingo considering the majority of what we knew of them was that they were jerks who tried to overrun Gridana and then got their aether kicked in by Garlamand. Considering the events that lead to the WoL freeing Al Amago it almost feels like the WoL and scions created a power vacuum, pointed to Yda and went, "Look, it's your new leader! :^)" Doma at least felt like you were liberating actual subjugation, Alamode-igo felt real muddled when it came to what the WoL was doing.

None of that is anywhere close to Hildibrand. Hildibrand is the equivalent of Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo. Meaning completely over the top, can't be taken seriously, and you're there for the insane hijinks and laughter. FFXIV's story, even with the current stuff, is more akin to DBZ. While there are funny moments, it's more action-y than anything, and can get pretty dramatic.

If we had to make an analogy, it's more like DB Super where the characters feel flat compared to the older writing. Combine that with the new writers doubling down on silliness and reconning established lore and I can say with some confidence that the story is GOING the way of the hilibrand feel. But hey, don't worry about it, I doubt the writers are going to take any of the criticism to heart when the writers are on record telling the players not to think too deeply about the story, lol.

There’s a reason the first comic this series ever got was a slice of life high school au manga. The series as a whole has been lowered to Saturday morning cartoon levels of angst, absolutely no one important ever dies and they resolve to the next fluff cutscene after a stressful moment as quickly as possible for the sake of the people who come online and unironically post about how they needed to “take a breather” from how stressful 6.0 was.

DBZ Super feels a lot like the original Dragonball to me, but I haven't gotten that far in it. That series has been milked to hell and back. Thinking on it though, it does feel like we're winding down to the old ARR story levels. Meaning the calm before the storm, because everybody remembers what we got hit by at the end of ARR's extra patches...

But in all seriousness you're reaching VERY hard to make this conclusion. Gof forbid the story be loght hearted. Thats not exactly a foreign aspect in the franchise. And yeah I much preferred when Vegeta was just "hey look at me I'm the Prince of Saiyans". MUCH better character writing back then.

You see what you want to see. There have always been ton of these scene in FF games and other flag ship tittles like Tales, Trail, Xeno ...etc... I remember because I'm actually one of those people who find the majority of the them annoying. The difference between you and me is that I made peace with the fact it's part of the medium, rather than single it out. If anything, FF14 is far less offensive in this regard than the average Japanese tittle.

The calm before the storm? Isn’t that what the final shb patches were supposed to be. If nothing drastic happened in the literal end of days/final days, i don’t exactly see how something worse could happen. Face it, the game isn’t going to have anymore consequences. All we’re going to have every patch now is fanservice, and the protagonists winning without breaking a sweat. The devs clearly showed with Endwalker and their QnA comments they don’t care about lore. They care about pandering to the community.

If you had actually read my post, you would have seen that i stated other ff's have scenes like this yes, however they arent as littered with them as ff14 is AND they are well executed and placed in proper areas that make sense. Whereas with 14 you have yourself going on lunch dates and scion dating scenes while the other side of the world is literally on fire, or you're walking around a chatty rabbit and showing it various fruits while the world is at stake. I stated my other point because it does affect the fanservice. Other games can get away with it because the main cast faces actual threats and theres a lot going on. 14 doesnt have that luxury and hasnt had it for quite a long time.I dont really care if you personally dont understand it, im not exactly specifically talking to you when im making my point.

But in all seriousness, I have already stated that I would if the game reaches a certain point. A garbage story is not one of them. I have read/watched/played garbage stories, this isn't one of them YET but it sure is following some worrying trends. You can call it pessimism, I call it noticing a basic pattern. That, combined with SE leaning hard on the cash shop and dabbling in NFTs makes it really hard to enjoy a game at face value. Oh well, people were still playing WoW well after it's fall and it would be silly to think XIV's future will be different considering the trends we are seeing, lol.

It was set up though. The moment Zenos killed his father I knew that the place was going to go downhill fast. We all saw how he mismanaged things in Stormblood due to his views and that's when his father had him in check.

Nerva was a coward though. They only moved when Zenos died, not when he was alive. I didn't expect much of them.

The moon is way better than where they lived last considering its harsh climate and Zenos letting it collapse in Civil War.

Correct me if i’m wrong but those are all different expansions, and idk if an entire different language translation really counts but…either way. I feel there’s a difference when you have light hearted moments when there’s not really any huge threats going on, and then you have constant back to back fluff when it’s supposed to be the end of the world…

I did read your post, so I wonder if you read mine.

I'll give you the most recent example, although I don't know if you play the game. Trail of Cold Steel 4: the night before the major battle that will literally decide the fate of the world the crew decided ... they gonna have fun in a theme park!! Even better, they decided to have a drinking contest where half of them literally got smack. It's silly, inappropriate, illogical in every sense of the world. And the Trail series is probably the 2nd place contender with the Tales series as flagship RPG outside of the FF series. So in case you want to assert "I did not read your post", I did read it, I'm not merely point out the silliness in existence, but also their time and place.

And that's the norm, not exception. As a certified WeEb I consume an unhealthy amount of Japanese media, and the majority of have tendency of dropping silly moments when tension are high, that's just their thing. If I want to waste my time, I can spend a few hours citing you these moments from some of the biggest JRPG tittle and novel.

I still think it was unfair for Nerva to be killed off like that. Whether he was a coward or not we didn’t even know him personally. He may have been a coward but he did after all care for his homeland. There’s a reason why his legatus Vergilia and his men followed him.

Mimidoa leads into the iconic fight against Siren, one of my better memories from ARR. From what I remember he's a little Tyrion-type character that I'm surprised hasn't been called out by twitter as being problematic, and the current localization team would likely shy away from characters like him in favor of fleshing out the intricacies of what pronouns fae creatures use in Il Mheg. Mimidoa is not comparable to something as innocous and inoffensive as the catboy hamburger scene or the cartoon rabbits on the moon.

The Sylphs make the player characters do ridiculous things but they didn't outstay their welcome nor did they implant themselves in a moment as serious as shortly after the demise of Zodiark like the Loporrits did. The Sylphs were a part of FFXIV's world that was charming and fitting, not forceful "light-heartedness" shoved in just for the sake of it.

The Moogles are quite similar in this regard. A Final Fantasy staple, of course they were going to be ridiculous but again didn't outstay their welcome. In Heavensward they were used to payoff an earlier plot point about the Moogle King and watching characters like Estinien and Sigurdu call them out on their nonsense. Instead in EW Thancred just stoically nods and barely has a reaction to learning that the First would be abandoned if they go along with the Loporrits' plan.

I haven't played the JP version so I cannot speak at length about how Haurchefant behaves there but compared to the others characters in Ishgard he was one of the least memorable ones aside from his sacrifice at the Vault. I have very little relevant memories of him otherwise. In any case he wasn't nearly as forceful in the english version as G'raha Tia currently is.

ARR's characters were a lot rougher around the edges and less "tame" than some of the newer characters are. Back then they weren't afraid to go full medieval - now they are for fear of offending the twitter playerbase who cannot handle anything bad happening to their comfort characters nor characters that don't align with modern-day morals. You'll never see another Mimidoa, or anything in that vein with this current writing style, because someone will make a post along the lines of:

"Um, can we talk about how X character is so problematic? I can't believe that SE would enable this kind of mentality ingame like this"

"I can't believe that they really did that to X, do they hate Y group?"

and instead of ignoring these individuals and their circles SE in it's current state would more than likely bend to their whims and curtail the story to fit their worldview. The only way to be safe with those people is to do nothing but memes and jokes. The fact that I may have to cede this territory to them is something that bothers me greatly, I came here for a decent Final Fantasy story and gameplay but it's looking like there may come a point where we end up with neither.

We might as well just go full Looney Tunes at this point. The next expansion's final boss will be taken out by a giant rocket with the words "ACME CO." printed on the side. The boss will be covered in black soot and he'll slowly turn to face the camera with an exasperated look while the end credits start to play.

Oh come on now, that's just being silly. The rocket would be powered by aether and have the grand company logos on it and the boss would particle fade away after he looked at the camera. Sad music would then play. This is a very serious scene, please pay the reverence it deserves.

It's very much clear that the "quirkiness" was added in Endwalker to be a counterweight to the low points in the expansion. Shadowbringers was great but ended up being very emotionally draining from a story standpoint and they wanted to get as dark or more dark in Endwalker but felt the need to add those counterpoints to lighten the story.

If you think any of those are near the absurdity of Hildibrand, I feel like you have only heard of what Hildibrand is and haven't experienced it.

Endwalker was far from perfect, but if you feel like it was on the level of Looney Tunes, I have no idea what to say.

JP Haurchefant (AKA Whorechefant) is a horrible womanizer/manizer who blatantly (and uncomfortably) flirts with the WoL. Brochefant (EN) is much better. JP lines include:

You're right, I forgot. The boss will be voiced by Samuel L. Jackson, and right before he completely particle fades away he says: "Oh no, motherfu-..."

Goodness, I didn't think it was possible to more forceful than G'raha Tia but I stand corrected. Thank you to Koji Fox for keeping that stuff out of the English localization. It's just so uncomfortable. The number one way to get someone to hate a character is to force them onto the player like this without also giving them the ability to tell them to get lost.

Also, interesting to note how it's only men in game who speak that way and that no women I can think of speak or behave in such an explicit manner. A bit one sided.

What low points though? It’s hard to take the “dark” stuff seriously when it either only happens to random npc’s or it’s immediately followed up by “lul funny rabbits.” It’s why i think Garlemald was one of if not the best part of the msq. It was dark yes, and they didn’t undermine it with any silly antics.

In FF7, you can steal Tifa’s underwear in a serious flashback scene and Tifa even yells at you that you’re supposed to be taking this seriously.

You utilize a dolphin to jump and put you up into a Shinra base you’re sneaking into.

Red XIII dresses in a Shinra uniform and pretends to be a human while sneaking on a ship.

Tifa escapes being executed and has a slap fight with Scarlett on top of a giant gun.

Cait Sith exists.

Thank you for describing a series of scenes and characters that were nowhere nearly as grating as the nonsense with G'raha Tia and the Loporrits were. It has gotten to the point for me at least where whenever G'raha Tia comes on screen, my motivation to play the game drops. He represents so many of the things that have gone wrong lately with recent writing and since PvE gameplay is floundering worse than PvP gameplay - somehow - this game's future is becoming increasingly concerning.

It fits with the scenario. The slap fight and underwear i will 100% agree is pure fanservice though, however that’s 2 examples
compared to….how many in Endwalker? Also, Cait Sith makes sense. He’s supposed to be as unsuspecting as possible because he’s literally a spy. A spy who also sacrifices himself and has an entire building collapse on him but i digress. The amount of slice of life/fanservice prevalent in an expansion about the end of the world is beyond ridiculous and the pacing for it is what makes it horrible.

I’m not sure what world you’re from where a 4-legged talking animal dressed up in people clothes and walking around on 2 legs while pretending to be a human and cracking jokes is “serious content”.

If you want slice-of-life, there’s going snowboarding at the Golden Saucer or going on a date with the girls of your party (or Barret) right before you go to the Temple of the Ancients.

I’m not sure either why people keep pointing at Lopporits either when every expansion has had their equivalent. We had Sylph in ARR, Moogles in HW, Namazu in SB (living in a manor and getting drunk off of tea in the middle of a depressing battlefield full of craters), and Pixies in ShB who had an entire happy fun land in the middle of an otherwise dark expansion.

Shadowbringers had the same “relax at the inn” stuff in between zones that Endwalker had and I don’t remember people making a big deal about that or the whole half of a zone devoted to a race that was added to the game specifically for fanservice. It feels like classic forums to start off by complaining about the Garleans and then devolving into “Endwalker has too many funny/relaxing scenes”.

If you thought the pixies were living in a happy and fun land then perhaps you should revisit Shadowbringers. Il Mheg is by far still one of the strongest zones in game, where the pixie's nonsense was balanced out by the dark and dangerous undertones. Endwalker with how eager it is to cast away longstanding concepts and threats warranted no such focus on "relief."

No expansion was as offensive in this regard except Endwalker. Shadowbringers was an expansion where we were constantly under threat and the occasional break - in the inn - was handled a lot better than the breaks at - the college dormitory - one fit far better than the other.

This direction is not sustainable. You have a story turning into more of a convoluted joke with each patch and gameplay that is failing on many fronts. At this rate it won't be long before every complaint that FFXIV is just a visual novel ends up validated. At that point there'll be nothing left to defend, with everything I liked about this game gone. All for the sake of fanartists and streamer clout. Please.

The game is already a giant joke when you look at item descriptions. For the whole of Ishgard restoration I had to sit back and fake laugh at them bringing up the salt rock "joke" over and over again. They clearly want every written aspect of this game to be an extended meme, might as well start calling it a comedy game at this rate.

yoship had a direct hand in writing this expansion, i think he came up with the lopporits

i think they wanted another popular meme race like the namazu except IN SPACE

As someone who read perhaps 80% translated VN available (official or unofficial), please ... the people who think FF14 (or any MMO for that matter) resemblance a VN are clueless, and if you think they will be validated ... I don't think you know what a VN is either. Comparing something like the Trail series to a VN will even be a stretch, but people say FF14 is just a VN is stereotyping to the extreme.

Don't know why you think there have to be something to defend. It's a game, the only defend it needs is being worthwhile and fun, to which it has an almost ironclass defense, at least at the moment. You seem to want to assign some arbitrary ... things to the game, which neither here or there.


Do I think FF14's story great? Yes and no. Yes it's great for an MMO, but comparing to the majority of Singpleplay JRPG I played, FF14's story is a D+ at most. Do I like all the corniness, cheesy and cringy scene? No, but I accept it's the natural part of the medium. But, that doesn't mean I can't enjoy them. It's like while I certain prefer 5stars fine dining, that doesn't mean I can't enjoy a simple fast food burger, as long as I know I'm eating one. Too many complain here is like order a BicMac and complains why it doesn't taste the same as a New York steak.

And I can't help but love this game more and more. I started in 2014, and in the first 3 years I only played 1 char. Around 2017 I rolled an alt and kept it active. Then last years, I created 2 more alts. And I don't simply park my alt around, I actively played all of them. So ... mileage may vary. If this game doesn't suit you any longer ... well the good news is it's not the only game that exist.

You don't think the lead developer interviewing streamers and talking about their reactions to cutscenes isn't seeking to pander to them to at least some degree? Much of Endwalker was built around 'feels bait'. Nothing of consequence actually happens, though the game hides that behind throwing all sorts of different things at the player all at once which amount to very little.

The Tower of Zot is an excellent example. It's meant to be creepy and tense though we walk away saving...absolutely everybody inside with minimal effort because, conveniently, G'raha can suddenly mass teleport people to safety.

It's even more ridiculous because streamers overreact for a living. They're entertainers. Speaking as someone who is a hair trigger crier and usually easily emotionally manipulated through feels, EW did nothing for me. The few times I cried were more out of fury than anything else. (Thanks, EW, prior to this expansion I can't recall having ever rage cried. GSBTW. /s)

Edit: Forgot to mention the Scions are immortal, have been since HW. Nobody legitimately thinks they're in any danger anymore.

Getting back to the Bozja part, I'm almost 100% certain there were meant to be 3 stages rather then 2. Even the relic weapons had some odd stages some parts felt long enough to cover 2 stages and others were entirely skipped. This is the first time we never actually have the non shiny final stage, the only way to get it is via replica.

Bozjas story had so much potential yet since the empire falls Bozja updates kinda make no sense, looks like they took the resources out and redirected them, makes you wonder if DR was meant to have a "savage" version in the first place and not a 2nd raid duty similar to how BA works. Turning DR Savage surely would be easier then tuning a new savage only raid.

Gabranth being there only in name is such a weird move, and not only that but being supposedly killed in fieldnotes, its a flag name of FFXII which is tied to Bozja, or rather ivalice, wasted potential. If they don't wanna use him, just keep it in your back pocket to eventually make use of it, but like this ... its such a odd move.

There should've been a 3rd area which lead up to a fight with Gabranth, but there likely just wasn't any time/resource ... as Bozja was already delayed.

Hyperbole won't win you any points. See this is the type of complaining that does nothing good for either side of the spectrum here. This here is complaining for the sake of. Not complaining while offering ways to "fix" these so called issues.
