Yeaaah I gotta admit I got bitten by the Dying light zombie..I mean, bug. But I still login to do my dailies and stuff with the FC.
Fair.
My statement was much more rhetorical, but ARR as a standalone is imo not exciting.
Imagine playing through ARR there is no HW expansion yet, nothing to look forward to. Killing lalobrea in MSQ is your endgame. It has great moments, but the plot (particularly the rise to conflict and the speed between exciting events) and story writing are lackluster.
ARR is an introduction through and through. Nothing is wrong with that. Introductions and worldbuilding, especially when done in large chapters get quite dry and boring. There's a difference between the worldbuilding of JR Tolkien writing and something like Eragon.
But ff14, esp being an mmo, did a good job of its intro.
ARR is enjoyable when you know it's not the end and you can jump right in HW, this is why I believe HW is so very popular. Once we're past introduction, we can now get some action and action is always exciting.
As for my assessment of Lost Ark - it's all Action, Glitz, Glamour, Sexy. GAGS if you will.
Nothing wrong with gagging on gags. It's fun. If you feel like you need to pay money for fomo then that's largely an individual's problem and an insecurity for casuals tbh.
Some people have the mindset that they always need to be on top of their game and that's how MMOs make money off of P2W for the most part.
Just enjoy a game if you enjoy it. I swear this comm makes everything political esp when daring to talk of another MMO XD
14 isnt any better with the ego fantasy what with every character fawning over you and worshipping the ground you walk on. 14 also has problems with genderlocks with the races and outfits. Slut wear for the girls also pertains to 14 and the story is just sympathy sob story after sympathy sob story once you get to shb.
Having played ARR when it was a standalone (I've been playing since 1.0 and played ARR not only from launch but from the Beta as well), I can honestly say that this actually was never the case with ARR at all, even if your statement was rhetorical (if it really was as dull as it's made out to be, then how did the game break all records and become a certified success when it launched in 2013, even taking into account the albatross around it's neck that was it being a reboot of what was universally regarded as the worst MMO of all time, 1.0?)
ARR had an endgame even at launch, you had the first stage of the relic quest, Allagan tomestones were first introduced (Allagan Tomestones of Philosophy and Mythology), the first raid was available from the start (Binding Coil of Bahamut - the first part of Crystal Tower was also meant to be available from launch but had to be delayed as it wasn't ready in time). There was 'Hard Mode' versions of the first three Primal fights. There were the two elite FATEs (Odin and Behemoth, and trust me, those were deserving of 'end game' titles at launch). There was post storyline dungeons (Amdapor Keep, and another one I can't remember).
There actually was plenty to occupy players who reached the end, and even then, the first main content patch (2.1 A Realm Awoken) arrived about three months later which added a new Primal (or rather, an old one from 1.0, Good King Moggle Mog), EX mode Primals for Garuda, Ifrit and Titan, the aforementioned delayed Crystal Tower raid, and a massively long new main scenario (that was so long players complained about it, and much more). And the next four main content patches only added more and more before HW was launched two years later.
Hardly "just an introduction" with nothing to do.
I am someone who played ARR when it first came out, after having previously been playing FFXI and various other fantasy games/old turn based ones. I had no idea what to expect out of it, and was mostly sold on it due to the presence of male miqote and how cool (at the time) some of the Artifact Armors looked in comparison to the model quality I was used to as an FFXI player with very limited access to good gear.
In terms of the story-I enjoyed my initial moments in Gridania and exploring Limsa but after level 15 things felt extremely boring plotwise until the encounter with Ifrit, which helped solidify that the player character was more than just a standard nobody in a game like WoW, where they've been "the champion!" for 20 years straight as far as I'm aware. However, I wasn't fully taken in until we reached Coerthas, with its traditional fantasy elements and most of all the impressive view of Ishgard in the distance. I was also interested in what the Garleans were doing, so these later elements combined with the more challenging gameplay of ARR (at the time I played it) made for a very great experience.
This can no longer be said, sadly. ARR combat is simplified to such a degree that I could not realistically recommend someone begin at ARR unless they were completely new to MMORPGs. No instance or dungeon is challenging anymore, unless you get unlucky enough to be paired with a bad tank or healer thought that isn't often the case. There is no difficulty factor to try to overcome in the early game-only a very basic story with some great moments that are spaced out too far and wide. Even after I finished ARR when I stuck around I was only interested in the story surrounding Shiva and Ishgard. Everything else was unworthy of my attention. If I was trying to get someone into the game these days, I'd recommend they boost through to Heavensward. You shouldn't have to invest so many hours into an introduction to get to the good part of a game, which is why I hope in 7.0 that new players are allowed to make their characters start at the beginning of season 2 rather than subjecting them to the entirety of season 1 of FFXIV.
It was rhetorical to the context of someone else saying they played a game for 111 minutes and deemed it bad.
If I played XIV for 111minutes and said XIV is stank doodoo this forum would make me a martyr. At least I'd die a male viera I guess.
Now, I played ARR as a standalone for a few months. Hit 50. Eh. Primals were ok. Story was ok. Ultimately, went back to maining WoW. Opinions opinions, something something folks with different strokes, et al. HW was what ultimately brought me to main.
Also, I never said there was nothing to do in ARR don't put words in my mouth unless its grilled chicken recipes >:M
Filet ARR and combine it with HW to make best chicken recipe.
Thats not a good option. You're literally wanting for new players to skip all the buildup with their WoL to get to 7.0. Im sure 7.0 will be a somewhat "soft reboot" with new stories to tell but you're crazy if you think the devs will just ignore the huge amount story and character growth that wont be explored further coming to the next expansion. Its a bit jaded viewpoint to see how people find that just because every expansion has been consistently improving on the previous doesnt mean it automatically invalidate those previous expansions (yes even Stormblood has value). FFXIV is at most a story driven MMO where every single quest and side content builds upon its own narrative. So no, I wouldnt like for them to give new players to skip to 7.0. It makes no sense and it'll also overwhelm newbies with the amount of catch up content for them to do later.Quote:

Yeah, you bet I am. There is no way I would subject anyone over the age of 16 to the horrifically boring experience that is modern day ARR. When I press "New Game" or create a character on any video game I expect and demand better than what the current state of FFXIV's intro experience is nowadays. You can watch a 10 minute video and get caught up with lore basics. The only thing you need to know to start Heavensward is dragons don't get along with Ishgard. Everything else you can be filled in on later.
The story and gameplay from that point on get progressively stronger, though Heavensward gameplay nowadays does still feel like an extended tutorial level with how easy those dungeons and trials have become. Even so, it's leagues better than ARR. As for Stormblood? When I played it at launch I mentally tuned out of the story until Yotsuyu stepped on Gosetsu's throat because at the time Alisae had far from proven herself and Lyse remains one of the most insufferable characters in the entire history of the game. The eastern segment was strong, the Ala Mhigan segment was atrocious. Thank goodness the Exarch spirited us away from Stormblood, a colorless expansion whose few good moments were once again too spaced out to be worth it.
And thus the curtain unveils itself lol
But on a serious note that's like... your opinion man. I personally didnt find ARR boring and I know a good number of people who enjoyed the experience of ARR knowing that it just gets better and better. Listen if it werent for ARR, then Heavensward wouldnt have hit the mark as good as it did, nor would any of the future expansions. The whole point of FFXIV's content is the journey of getting there, because thats literally 70% of its content. Just trimming that linear progression kinda would kill the fun out of the game, at least imo. Of course there's people who just dont care and would like to get to end game (which I would response that to being you wasting both your time and money if thats your way of thinking when it comes to gaming) but the game isnt designed for it to be fully skipped to end game.
inb4 people point out story skips in Mogstation. Which I'll also respond with, the game doesnt push you to use story skips or job skips because
1. Mogstation is an out of game element that thankfully doesnt intrude itself on its UI like most other MMO cash shops
2. Game isnt designed with grind systems for you to progress. Literally only main progression system is just going through MSQ to unlock content which is a big part of FFXIV.
3. You can do everything with one character, which again applies to the design of the player getting attached to their WoL through both gradually getting introduced to the main story and content
But in truth everyone is different, people may or may not care with what I say and thats fine.
I dont think its just about getting to endgame, but theres many people who play an mmo for an mmo. !4 is different in that it puts its story considerably first and being an mmo second. I think its pretty prevalent though when so many people expressed grievances for arr that the devs had to cut some of the quests because its so long and a slog. I say this as someone who enjoyed arr, it is a major slog. The combat is actually kind of detrimental as the jobs change so much from 50 to 90 people can get the wrong mindset. Most content in 14 is unfortunately in endgame, which unfortunately, requires you to play through 4 expansions just to get there.
Nah, I'll take a 10 minute lore video instead of 10+ hours of being the scion's sidekick thank you very much. Heavensward, Shadowbringers, and Endwalker are the expansions where the player character gets to be themselves the most-in ARR we're a means to an end and in Stormblood we're second banana to none other than Lyse. The journey is definitely the point in FFXIV-just not the ones in ARR and SB, not with ARR's nonexistent battle difficulty and SB being split into an interesting arc and a boring one.
I'm not even remotely thinking of endgame when it comes to this discussion. My playthrough of both Shadowbringers and Endwalker took several weeks because I actually enjoyed the the adventure I was going on instead of being mentally tuned out everytime Lyse and Minfilia opened their mouths. Granted, nowadays I stop paying attention whenever Thancred comes on screen since its my opinion he shouldn't have made it out of the First but that's another story.
You cannot have an MMORPG whose significant first portions are nothing but a visual novel, that is what ARR feels like its reduced to now that you can clear any fight by just spamming one button or having more experienced players handle all the mechanics for the new one. The stat squish was a massive failure in terms of making old content any more challenging for newer players.
Better at this point to let them choose a class that starts at level 90 so they can begin their playthrough at the start of season 2, while still retaining the option to start as a default season 1 character if they want to play from the very beginning.
Thanks to this thread I finally decided to try out Lost Ark btw, despite my reserves (gender lock, gender-stereotypical bodies and outfits, region locks, fantasy setting).
Oh cmon I am so sick and tired of this.
Holy hell if you dislike this stuff you've already got like every single Western game in existence to play.
Some of us actually enjoy it and we want games to play as well ( FFXIV to me is more of a middle ground, but it's not the same ).
This entire '' sexism hurr durr '' discussion is so freaking tiresome, there's nothing sexist about it...
If you look at it and think sexism it has a lot more to do with your own views than the views of the devs or people who enjoy it.
So damn tired of this cringe moralization about it constantly, if you don't like it then don't play it it's that simple sitting around being a jerk about it is totally unnecessary.
I personally really love the Bayonetta femme fatale styled female characters, just because you dislike it doesn't make it sexist or wrong.
The game industry is massive and there is a space for all kinds of games and characters, and it's pretty damn hypocritical and annoying how you can experiment with all kinds of hyper masculinity and crazy shenanigans with male characters.
But if you do it with hyper femininity and female characters in the other direction then suddenly people start screeching about sexism.
Clearly a lot of people enjoy it too considering that it's the second most played game on Steam now.
It's so extremely frustrating how y'all who have a problem with it can't just let it go and let people have fun, I dunno why you've gotta complain about it constantly every single time these games exist.
Just let people have fun and leave it alone.
You've already got 99% of games catered to what you want.
If you're telling me that only women can be magic users and only men can be warriors in a video game, I agree that it is not sexist. It's just ridiculous gatekeeping and an instant turn off because guess what: I don't play video games to tell me what I can and cannot be, or what I can or cannot do. Add on the clickbait outfits on top of it and its got all the makings of a vapid cashgrab game that I will not dedicate any time of day to.
Made me have a flashback to this...

The only reason Twitch streamers are playing it right now is because Amazon is paying them to, since Amazon is the publisher in North America and Amazon owns Twitch. They'll all be playing Elden Ring in a few weeks or be back to whatever game they were streaming before.
On the plus side this will get all the WoWfugees who wanted FFXIV's endgame to become as abusive as WoW's to finally leave us alone.
Such as this. Lemme guess you joined after quitting WoW and only do Savage Pandamoneum raids (before did Savage Eden) and never do roulette (which includes all 83 dungeons, 12 allied raids, like 70ishish trials, like 48ish raid bosses), don't do Manderville, never do any of the side jobs, don't do hunts, have never visited housing, have never done maps, don't do FATEs, never did Alliance Raids more than once. And then you complain that there's "nothing to do at endgame" because the devs don't timegate everything ever and don't make the game a second job to cater to your elitist tastes. Have fun in Lost Ark. Enjoy the entire endgame of farming mats on your main + 6 alts just to hope you the RNG items (which are daily capped how many you can get) give you the right stats to upgrade your main all while spamming an ad for the cash shop to just skip the RNG. Enjoy getting kicked from groups for making minor mistakes and groups disbanding after one wipe. Seriously dude. XIV is not made for elitist raiders who just want the devs to make WoW type raids for them.
Literally the only people I ever meet in game who complain about FFXIV not having endgame are people who brag about being in one of the top raiding guilds on their WoW server or whatever other MMO they fled because it's actually bad.
Tbf, 14 isn’t any better in this regard overall. If you look at the official job mascot artwork, only the males are tanks and the females are healers. They still haven’t changed that with sage or gun breaker lol.
Geez it sounds a whole lot like you cant handle the idea of someones opinion conflicting with yours. Different mmo's offer different things. 14's endgame *is* incredibly sparse in comparison to other mmo's. I do find it a bit ironic when people try to say the devs care about wasting peoples time when they time and time again do things in a way to waste the players' time. Just look at the way housing works. You're clicking on a placard for hours on end doing nothing else if you really want a house. You seem like one of those people who cant handle anyone criticizing your beloved mmo. Give me a break.
I've literally done all you've said and more (on my main which you can easily find in my FC before you look me up): I've cleared HoH solo, play Frontlines and got t100 in Feast, finished Delubrum Savage, crafted for the world second team this Savage tier.
The endgame of FF14 is sparse to anyone who has played this game for a while.
It's beyond moronic to question people who complain about FF14 not having content, supposing that they have not done any content.
You can quite literally be and do anything you want in this game. The mascot of a job is irrelevant when the reality is that once you make a character-you are free. That is why I'm over here and not playing BDO or Lost Ark, and why I ended up favouring FFXI over nonsense like Perfect World or Tera.
I will concede that the addition of gender-locked races was the lowest point in this game's history for me right after the introduction of limited jobs. How they even entertained that idea is bewildering, and the humongous disparity between the quality of Hrothgar vs Viera completely leaned in favor of females and left the men out in the rain. Thankfully they have corrected this and gave us a male model that nearly eclipsed male miqote in their popularity, hopefully female Hrothgar turn out to be great as well.
Thats perfectly fine, im just saying though, genderlocks exist in this game as well, and so does the whole "males tank and females heal" stereotype. Im seeing a lot of people in this thread point out problems in lost ark that also apply in this game as well. Also sadly you cant be anything you want in this game. Cant be a female hrothgar :p
I will say this. Lost Ark has awesome combat, and its dungeons and raids look cool in terms of style/aesthetics etc. However, it's dungeons and raids are literally the ONLY THING to do in the game lmao. It's a raid centric MMO. And the raids get locked behind the RNG mechanics that are designed to eventually frustrate you into paying to progress.
I guess it only feels sparse if the only thing you do in life is your wagejob/school and FFXIV / videogames in general.
Those things take about a hundred hours or more to do. If hundreds of hours of gameplay is "sparse" to you, then please. Listen to this suggestion dude. Go outside, go stand in a field....good. Now take off your shoes, plant your feet firmly on the ground and TOUCH GRASS!
LMAO, and the typical retort that one must be no-lifing to achieve all these has come out. I have a fantastic life, I hike, cook, and go to bars with my friends and I'm doing very well in my academic career, thanks for asking.
You don't need to be a NEET to do any of what I said. HoH solo took me 20 hours. Crafting for world prog takes like... literally 2 hours? Getting t100 in Feast took the longest which was about 40-60 hours, since I was new to Feast. I was done with Delubrum Savage in 12 hours (pre-nerf). This Savage tier I cleared it in 20 hours too.
Now a tier lasts 3 months and 100 hours over 3 months is not a lot at all.
By the way if you have to resort to random assumptions that someone hasn't done all content, or to argue that someone has no life, you probably already lost the argument.
Noone huh? i guess im a nobody, cuz i was happily questing ;^)
In comparison to what exactly? I've played many MMOs throughout the years and hard-disagree unless by "content" you mean hardcore Korean RNG grind "endgame" - in which case you would be right.
This game's endgame is no more sparse than anything else out there. Sometimes you run out of things to do, and that's true for all games. You can unsub any time.
Out of curiosity I decided to give it a go. I'll be honest, Path of Exile is probably a better free option for this sort of thing.
It has been awhile since I've even touched it, but I thought it was fun enough. I've heard Grim Dawn is pretty decent. Diablo-esque games just don't keep my attention for very long. They are still fun for me when done right (I think Lost Ark falls flat in that regard) but mostly in small doses.
In that case YMMV. I love those types of games and GD has a lot to do if you enjoy the fighting system. (reputation system that unlocks super bosses, a randomized dungeon where you need to craft a one time use key to enter, secret areas with alters that award you different things if you beat the bosses, super armor where you can only get the recipe by completing a secret quest on the hardest difficulty, ect.) I will gladly shill for that game since I dropped over 100 hours on it throughout a year or so. I always find myself coming back to it.
I didn't log in today because I was pondering actually trying Lost Ark but then really Isometric games ain't really my thing so I played Toram Online instead, typical korean anime styled mobile port a bit solid then most. One thing that stuck out to me was the character creation it made me jealous how they did hair options in that game lol.
So ... Lost Ark is mostly an aRPG with some PvE/PvP flavors ...
I played for about an hour. The storyline for Diablo 3 was more engaging. Heck, even Blade & Soul has a better storyline. I can see where many players will enjoy it. I had a great time with Diablo 3 and other isometric single-player games. I'm not sure the Deus ex Marysue is to my liking, though.
It doesn't feel much like an MMORPG. I may come back to it later and try again.
I understand that this thread is "bait" but I did notice that not a single person who for some reason (although, I did make 2-3 decent acquaintances over the years) decided to add me to their friend list is ever online.
I believe a lot of people simply have had enough of the same content cycle for almost a decade. Not to mention that there's nothing to do in this game at the moment, especially for those who can't be bothered to deal with Party Finder-folk. The Lost Ark barely has anything to do with players quitting, in my opinion.
As for me, I recently completed all achievements in Nier, which I think is a fairly overrated game, and (re)playing some PS1 titles in RetroArch ― the VHSPro shader makes games look nostalgically amazing. Hehehe.
Currently, I'm also playing, or rather "reading" The Silver Case. The sprite work is quite subpar, in my opinion, but I'm really enjoying the general aesthetics, "story" and the "unfiltered" language in this VN.
New vidya hardly pique my interest these days, so to speak. I'm actually boycotting all post 00s western, so to say, media.
But I think I'll give Elden Ring a try when it's on sale. Even though I'm quite tired of FromSoftware's generic "Souls" formula, and it really turns me off that they hired some westerner jabroni to write a "scenario" for this game.
45 minutes total playtime and at least 30 of that was in character creator. Once the actual game play started, I realized that it was just BDO and everything I hated about BDO was present. Uninstalled. FFXIV needs competition for innovation, but Lost Ark ain't it.
