Free Company Capacity - Insufficient Resources to Complete this Action

you seems to miss the point of mjollnir, let's me try to help to get it.

like you said not everyone are on the same time, why not make an alliance of FC, using LS as bridge between it.
like all the people from this time period in the same FC and other, using an officier LS for coordinate action between each FC.
one point i want to add, is not eve online, this game is not made for.... insanely huge FC, it's more for small FC of 40-50 member or so. over this, like mjollnir have said the chat will be a wall of text that will be impossible to follow.

indeed is not all the time, but it can happend.
finally, you say by yourself that everybody is not up all the time, and from personal experience of big structure, you always have group in the group. you already working like this even without know it. because is impossible to know everybody in a structure of more of 100 people.

@belladona: why not do the inverse, us the LS for coordinate between officier and make FC for group of 200 people? (still to huge if you want my piece of mind)

Haha, well fair enough. I was just talking from personal experience, wherein my FC members chat quite prolifically whilst crafting, levelling or waiting in DF. I guess if you don't socialize through the FC as much, then you won't get a wall of text! But I guess that brings me back to asking why you feel the need to be in the same FC if you don't use it to socialize.

I'm with you on this. I absolutely cannot understand why people are berating/arguing/disparaging this group for what was essentially a simple request.

Why do so many people care how others play the game when it's NOT directly affecting them?

Again, to the OP and their FC's: I really hope the FC alliances come out with 2.1 and that it solves your logistical problem. My advice is to just not respond to people who only want to cause controversy.

Thank you to those who understand why this thread was begun in the first place- to voice our concerns over an issue that has affected us personally. That we have to defend ourselves against incredulity or even outright hostility over the fact that we've exceeded the current capacity is silly.

It's true that at this point in the game the FC is mostly a glorified chat room. However, the reason we felt now was the time to address our concerns is because in 2.1 we will have Company housing and other benefits for the Free Companies become available. As it was said, we would like the ability to see all our people under one roof- both figuratively, and literally once Company housing comes to pass. Honestly at the time that 2.0 began we never expected to have more than 512 regular, active players after the 30 days were up. But now here we are, with over 800, and at a loss for how we're supposed to have everyone play together without anyone feeling like they've been excluded to the "B" team.

Pretty simple. Disperse commands through your officers via a linkshell. It's actually not that hard to figure out.

I didn't say it was freaking ideal, but it's not impossible to use a LS to coordinate the two FC. Explained enough?

Edit: There is no effective way to coordinate 700 people with a chat feature. If that is what you're looking for you'll never find it. Make a guild website, coordinate there, use a LS to coordinate between FC's and use your officers to disperse commands.

My post never suggested to "just use a linkshell". A hammer is cool, but it's hard to cut a cake with it. Use the tools available in the best way possible. And don't "call out" people that point out how to do so. Not like this is brain science.

@bellona: i understand perfectly your point, i simply to find a way to help you. because i doubt they will change this.
about the housing i'm pretty sure you can open the house to everybody if you want. and i doubt a house will be able to hold 800 people!!

A Linkshell can only have 128 people. It is not even close to a solution for any of this.

Because the FC chat tends to be more directly game related - organizing dungeon runs, FATE parties, etc. Things that are far more important to be in a single chat, as opposed to split into multiple.

Because dedicating a few poor saps to being literal message runners is such a fabulous game experience... It's a hacky, garbage "solution" and you all know it.

It's essentially what we have to resort to right now, and it's awful.

You all keep suggesting things we're already doing. I mean, the officers and I are fairly clever people. We've figured out some workarounds for the major issues. Workarounds aren't solutions, though.

We have a voice chat server.
We have an offsite forum.
We have people that relay information between FCs.

It'd just be nice, at the very least, to have a single place where multiple FCs could be in the same chat channel without having some kind of courier relay system or third-party program, or to have the FC size limit boosted. That's all.

It's amusing how there are so many people opposed to this suggestion, as if Yoshi-P asking some intern to change a value on the client/server is somehow going to divert development resources away from housing or the next dungeon. Also, could someone explain to me how a single database request for 800 records would somehow be worse than 2 database requests for the same number of records?

I think an alliance system would be fairly simple... allow two FC's to form an 'alliance' that provides an 'alliance channel' that all members of both FC's can see. Sounds like you wouldn't care for it to be read only except to officers, since it sounds like delegating communications to your officers isn't ideal for you (though I would have figured that would be a given in order to help keep such a large community organized to such a degree), but personally that would be nice to have at least an option for to avoid the possible text cascade.

Officers only exist in PBC to enforce community rules, handle inviting to the FC, and kicking inactives. They have no role in organizing events. Members recruit other members for their own personal events/goals/etc. through FC chat, which is why it is so important to us. Members who are like-minded form their own linkshells and use FC chat to find more people that fit their group's goals.

"Just use linkshells" was (and is) absolutely your suggestion and absolutely not a solution.

We would need to have several people to gopher requests for groups between two free companies. (We're already doing this and it's a terrible non-solution to our problem.)

As for your other suggestion "get a guild website." We've had a private web forum since 1.0 (even earlier if you count our parent website). How could we not, when we're a private group that requires membership validation?

I understand you're trying to be helpful but all you're really doing is wasting your daily post count offering suggestions that we're already doing and finding inadequate.

I'll be the first to say it. If these guys get to have a giant FC then that means I won't be affected in any way and that just pisses me right off. :mad:

As one of the ~350 or so members in the excess FC I feel I should chip in and say it would be nice to just have one big one.

While pruning people to >2 days offline = kick, which some seem to be offering as a solution, I would put forward that's drastically unfair as we have a wide variety of players.

Some are highly motivated to spend their spare time playing FFXIV and are on daily. Others are casual and may log on once every few days. Others may only play on weekends for work/school related reasons and some even less.

No play style is more valid than another and the majority of us simply want to have fun, what fun is depends on who you ask. Some people daily playing is fun, others that's just too much.

Regardless, one thing that remains consistent is that we'd all like the ability to play the game together and it would be nice if we could do that by simply increasing FC limits or some sort of alliance feature. I don't see how this is controversial at all.

(We don't actively recruit. We're part of an online community completely separate from FFXIV. One must be part of, and an active member of that online community to join our FC. There is no other way one can join.)

Actually I will take it under advisement to get the entire server in our FC so I can then kick them the moment the log out for being inactive and also using FC chat like shout.

I find it hard to believe there are any free companies large enough to be anywhere near the current size limit.

This is something I just fail to understand. Keeping the linkshell system as a chat function was smart, IMO. However, linkshell limits should be higher than free company limits so that you can use them to communicate across groups. The 128 person limit just makes no sense.

NO. With a lazy solution like that, it's bound to raise new problems. What about it? Well, for one it takes away choice, organization and lore. We have the Grand Companies, I'm surprised there's not a channel for them. I would prefer Link Shells taking a bigger toll on members while FCs work more like special task force or endgame groups.

It's quite clear to me that I grasped the purpose of this thread. I don't need to read all 275+ posts to understand what it's about.

If the message you're trying to send to me is "there are companies at this limit" that's fine, but you could say that without being so condescending.

Frankly, I think any company that big ought to kick out a member or hundred, so that other free companies might actually have players to recruit.

As painful as it may be for you to accept this fact, PBC is infact hitting the limit and already surpassing it by quite a large margin. Too large of a margin to fix with a band-aid fix such as linkshells. It would be far too cumbersome to do this effectively, though we are still using this.

I understand you are trying to be helpful, but this is the farthest thing from a workable solution you could suggest. The logistics of creating such a system is nightmarish, and quite simply impossible with the limitations inherent in the linkshell system. It is, in fact, the worst solution, second only to claiming a zone for ourselves and using shout chat to organize ourselves.
