Aye. Eureka coincidentally reminds me of FFXI in this context. In that mmo you HAD to communicate with people, or you would make zero progress. FFXIV definitely forces you to utilize your social skills and/or level them up if you want to make friends with people. As we know, you can effectively do all of the content in FFXIV with NPC(Not Particularly Chatty) energy.
Overall, I think FFXIV fails at being a social game, ironically
Why do you think it fails?
You can't force people to be social. All you can do is create the opportunity. It's up to the individual to take advantage of it.
If there is failure, I'd say it's the fault of the players who act to create hostile environments in game instead of friendly ones.
This game encourages the creation of hostile environments with the fixed party sizes, team jump rope and one shot mechanics, dps checks and the need to memorize entire fights before you can pull your weight.
Other players are more of a hindrance than a benefit. They are dragging you down, instead of helping you out.
I think there's a big difference between the social scenes in certain content. Players in Eureka and Bozja were very social, compared to the typical daily roulette where people just say "o/" at the start and "gg" at the end. At least part of that is probably because you had to shout for a group in Eureka but you don't have to talk at all to get into a DF party.
That makes zero sense because you can join or create a group of likeminded people for whatever stage of the learning process you're at.
It's like saying basketball is a hostile environment because you have to memorize the rules and plays, shoot accurately, etc. You're not forced onto the Lakers the second you pick up a ball, you can play with people playing for the same reasons you are and around the same skill level.
Specifically the negative element of a theme park MMO. It's great for solo players but it utterly destroys groups. A lot of mechanics are very solo friendly which is downright easier and faster to do with a random group. Eureka, Bozja, Raiding generally have more elements of social interactivity then other content because you benefit way more in working and communicating as a team then individually/random groups.
You can't force people to be social but you can definitely design systems that encourage it. I've been in many MMORPG's and this has got to be the least social one that I've played, this is something I said years ago and it still rings true. I'm not talking about saying hi to random strangers or shallow conversations but actual honest to goodness long standing interactions which are few and far between. The only word that comes to my mind if I had to describe this community is... sterile. Like a hospital.
Niroken..just curious...these "long standing interactions" you keep discussing are supposedly a key element in "being social " like "Free Companies" where you are supposedly friends with everyone and have known them all a long time...yet the day you leave said free company..all of a sudden they dump you and refuse to talk to you beyond "shallow conversations"..so, with this in mind, Id hazard a guess that said "honest to goodness long standing interactions" are about as deep and meaningful as a 2 inch pond.Quote:

If they were truly real friends..they wouldnt do that. Would they?
"LOL you are a one man FC that isnt a real FC then"...and yet we can be seen above, said "social groups" are a superficial construct at best. Its funny how thats been a pattern in any MMO, you are only a friend when you are of use to them..once you leave said "clique", you become well...to borrow the most appropriate term...an unperson.
MMO socialising seems to have very little actual substance to it, wouldnt you agree? That these supposed good long term friends suddenly..arent?
Odd, innit?
Agreed. Many of them are there for what you can do for them..not vice versa.Quote:
In the end you don't matter to them and I highly bet they never even think of you. Better to just keep to yourself that is what I found out
