What's your opinion on commendations?

They are dumb and a product of people seeking validation for everything they do. Fosters this weird dependency, cannot tell you how many times I have seen people whine about doing x but not getting a comm. Sure sometimes it is a joke but other times people do get bent out of shape or they even use it as a marker of how liked they are.

I am also willing to bet the people that comm others for doing well most likely could stand to focus more of their own gameplay and improve verse watching others. I dip set as quickly as possible I rather not get I exist points just for playing a tank or healer.

I have never seen that happen.

I would never comm someone who is complaining about not getting a commendation.

Most of the time you see people saying "and didn't get a comm" is in the Tales from the Duty Finder thread, and usually it's accompanied by a story about a SMN/RDM saving the run by ressing everyone they can.

I did them for the exp from the challenge log when leveling a new job, selecting a player at random from the list. Don't do it now, since I don't need the XP.

I'm similarly in that position, I will however give it to someone I can see is pulling more than their weight in the instance if it is going slow/bad.

I would love to see it removed from the challenge log. People shouldn't be bribed into giving the commendations for the sake of additional XP. People should give commendations because they think the player deserved it.

I give my comm to the person with the cutest glam if everyone's glamour ugly I just keep it to myself

I don't care about them because the current implementation only tells one thing : For how long you are playing this game, which does not give any good intel on how well the player performs. A better metric could be "commend / instances" for example.

Currently I give one when someone did really great in an instance : awesome DPS, well managed mitigation, healer dealing with incompetent party members (that could include me) and still performing great. Basically, I stopped giving them to the best player in the party (relative scale) but to extraordinary behaviour (absolute scale).

When I still have levelling to do, During the first 5 instancies of the week, I give them to the best player in the party, just to complete my weekly journal stuff.

I tend to give comms out when I see something that made me go "Wow, glad they were there!" or "10/10 glam, too good 4 limsa". While I appreciate when I get a comm I don't expect it when playing tank or healer. Expecting a comm from good play is like expecting people to be civil to each other. It's nice when it happens but don't go expecting it, lol.

You really have never seen anyone say they did X but did not get any comms? I mean maybe if you avoid NN and the tales of the duty finder thread I guess it is possible.
