Zenos is only interested in the WoL, not Hildibrand's abusive asshole stepmom. He made that pretty clear to Yugiri.

If you've done the Heavensward Hildebrand quests, that's canon. We do steal an old man's pants (and also the rest of his armor) and leave him napping in morbol-infested wilderness.

That's not his stepmom. That's his mother. And she's rather protective of her little boy. The Mandervilles have a very boisterous way of showing their affection.

And her protective nature is kind of understandable considering she thought her 17 y.o son was dead for 5 years.
