New Mentor requirements

Seems I have little over 1,600 commendations...

But I don't have any jobs at 80, my highest is 74.


I will be able to recertify as a trade Mentor, which is fine by me.
That won't qualify me for Mentor roulette, but I already don't qualify for it because I don't have everything unlocked.

And at the rate my sister and I are actually progressing, I am unlikely to have everything unlocked at any point.

I do not care alot about mentor status due to alot of toxicity i seen against me and other mentors here and there, I have a problem with the changes of whole.This was never mentioned before shb came out, only change to mentors was that you needed to be lvl80 to recertify.This comm change and splitting mentors thing is a ninja surprise.There are players who bought books for a class so they can comply with original change just to find out the comm requirement went from 300 to 1500.I can agree 300 is bit small requirement but that a big jump, couldn't they gradual through patches raise it some? .As a tradecraft mentor.. not happy about not being able to access mentor roulette since I been working to unlock it.
*Edit: Also most people give comms to healers or whoever looks cute/cute glam anyway sadly.

Hmm... The new reqs look like an improvement over the old free-for-all.

Three things I would do to make it better would be:
- Require PvE mentors to have completed all the duties required by Mentor Roulette. If one is not eligible for the roulette after a new content patch, they have until the next major patch to catch up. There should never be a situation where a player who hasn't been online for a year and isn't up to date on the content they're supposed to be mentoring people on keeps PvE mentor status. By the same token, there should never be a situation where someone with a mentor crown joins a mount farm party and has 0 clue what to do.
- Require PvP mentors to um... actually have done PvP? And they shouldn't have access to the PvE mentor roulette because... duh?
- Change the crown icons to jester hats.
+ Except the PvP icon which should be a teaspoon of sugar.

I am incredibly saddened by the change and still reeling from the shock of the out-of-the-blue ARBITRARY change to the commendation system which has been gamed.

I joined as a mentor when the mentor system first went in. I took a break from the game for 2.5 years due to multiple health issues. When I came back over 6.5 months ago, I was still able to mentor new players (as I was getting up to speed again), and provide a lot of assistance to returning players over the last 6 months, having a full understanding of their situation / questions and able to guide them not only with detailed info, but also big picture concepts. Just as I did with new players.

Since I've been back, I've scrambled through 2 expansions and gotten the requisite level 80's (tank / healer / 2 dps ) all in less than 6 months time. At my age (retired and in my mid 60's), I'm happy with that.

I also thought I was set to continue being a mentor (given ALL data to date).

Now, I find with less than 2 months to go to the "recertification period", suddenly the bar has been moved.


I only have 815 commendations. In order to make the necessary requirement of 1500, I will have to spend an unhealthy amount of time running PuG dungeons, which means I must abandon playing with my FC (people I have known and played with for over 20 years).

There are two reasons, SE, that I play this game: helping others and being part of the community that does (NN) and playing with my FC.

You've just arbitrarily decided to set the bar in a way that the first reason is painfully difficult to achieve and to get there, would require negating my second reason. (Pre-mades cannot hand out commendations.)

Other than your lore, SE, you now have nothing to offer me.

I can't see any reason to continue supporting and/or paying for a game that just pulled the rug out from underneath me.

I feel betrayed.

In the end, SE you are a business. You make decisions based, very much in part on Japanese culture, for what is right for your customers, trying to ensure the highest quality you can, wherever you can.

Given my own experience here, and the comments of others, especially in the face of how commendations (once a highly regarded commodity) are now capriciously handed out, (a known issue), I cannot fathom which customers you believe you are serving well, and how.


Hope to see this issue reviewed.

As it stands now, my choice (completely mine) is to accept, tolerate or vote with my wallet.

This describes exploiting, not earning commendations. Collusion in giving commendations (by having a group of friends queue separately for a very fast instance with few other players) should result in a ban, not a mentor crown.

While my main character has enough commendations, my sub doesn't (not too big a deal since I don't care about getting mentor status on both of them too much). However, even running all my daily roulettes as a healer on that character I don't know how long it's been since I've gotten a commendation. I even ran a raid today where everyone in my party died to mechanics except for the two healers (not my fault if people fall off the edge) and still no commendations. I know that they're meant to be something that shows your quality as a player, but the system should probably be changed.

Someone earlier mentioned wanting to give commendations to multiple players in one instance, and personally I think that would help. That way commends wouldn't go to the first tank on the list by default (when you just want the challenge log entry most people let them go to the top person easily I think). I'd also rather not be limited to only one person if I feel my group was a stand-out group. Having a second tier to the challenge log for commendations and having it count the number instances where commendations were given rather than number of commendations would help them to be given out more as well.

I am personally pleased with these changes. Is it ideal? Definitely not. But is it a step in the right direction? Absolutely it is! 1500 is a bit on the high end, but then again I know several DPS-only folks who have in the thousands of commendations, so anyone who has been here long enough should be there or close enough.

Commendations are the closest indicator we have in game that someone is willing to help others successfully - it is not without flaws for sure and some people can certainly cheat it if they have way too much time on their hands, but for the majority of people it should be a good indicator.

Only thing I would also add to unlock mentor status is to have the mentor roulette unlocked - why these 2 things are still separate still boggles my mind, and having that extra requirement would ensure that, in addition to the dedication and willingness to help showed by the commendations, someone is also at least somewhat competent. No need for savage clears to be a mentor, but having cleared previous extreme primals shouldn't be an insurmountable wall for anyone.

oof...it seems as a DPS main this will hurt...

but at the least i have both healer and tank at 70 atm, it wont hurt to level them up before the update. but the commendations part will be ouchies, im barely over 400 as it is

I agree, but if SE isn't going to make any changes to the commendation system and leave it as exploitable and irrelevant (comming for glamour, race, etc.) as ever, I see no reason why those lacking the required number of comms shouldn't do it.

Would make them even more worthless. It's much more common to leave without comming (because none deserve it) than it is to want to be able to hand out multiple comms.

You can rack up comms without saying a single word in chat, with poor play if you roll as a tank or healer with noobs or if you roll as any job and get paired with a premade.

Comms shouldn't count for anything if they're to be handed out by a community that finds putting in a minimal amount of effort (AoE, healer dps when the party is topped off and no damage is going out, big pulls when the healer doesn't have to use GCD heals) to be toxic elitism.

If this change is upsetting you enough to threaten to cancel your subscription despite your claim your primary reason to play is to help others, I can't help but think you're lying.

You don't have to be a Mentor to help others. I help others all the time without being a Mentor, nor do I want to be one thanks to the many negative past experiences I've had with Mentors.

You aren't getting kicked from the Novice Network in the foreseeable future. You'll still be part of that community.

If you're truly the helpful player you claim to be in instanced group content, you'll get those commendations you need to retain full Mentor status.

So what's your problem?
