For a lot of people, the minion/emote/mount is the reason they end up buying a $150 statue, or a $40 stuffed animal, or a $30 livestream pass, or maybe that $200 collector's edition. So lets say SE starts selling the "exclusive items" that were previously only available through some overpriced item for $7 - $25 on the cash shop. You're going to have a lot of pissed off people who essentially greatly overpaid for an item, and that would probably come into play when deciding whether or not to purchase another promotional item.
Exclusive items are a massive selling point, and a very common sales tactic. It's also why limited time offers work. People don't want to miss their chance at obtaining a new shiny item, and so they will often jump at purchasing a marked-up product. For the company to turn around later on and start selling that exclusive add-on is a bit underhanded.
Now, if they openly state that their new policy is to release the exclusive items on the cash shop in a year's time, I personally would have no qualms about that. Those who want it now can spend the extra cash while the patient ones can wait for the cash shop release.
tl;dr: I really don't give a rat's ass if people have the same items as me. I do however care about people being taken advantage of with higher prices by claiming something is exclusive, and then releasing it to the masses for far cheaper later on.
