Getting rid of surnames

If you want to argue the semantics of typing out a singular convoluted name, verses a stupidly long and irregular "fantasy" name with a space bar in it. You got the wrong person.

Are we talking about the same 1million+ people who more than likely share these 500 hundred common passwords here? I think you give people too much credit. ;)

But still, while I'm not one of the many who would be in danger of having their name of choice already being taken, I rather like my first and last name combination as it does add an additional sense of uniqueness. I do agree that there needs to be a better way to send someone tells at a moment's notice.

I personally like Belgian Rofl's suggestion a while back. But the simpler to code and more likely to be used solution would be a right click menu to send tells, access a player's bazaar and check their gear, etc. I suppose for gamepad users the solution would be to add a Send Tell option in the Interactions Menu.

It isn't semantic because it's a fact? Apart from gibberish RMT, you don't see XXXSephirothXXX.

Last names are fine. Keep them. It really doesn't bother me at all. I have a last name in real life and I'm not annoyed when I have to fill out forms. It's really not that big a deal.

I wish we could have punctuation though.

I want my Miqo'te to be named N'khani.... Can't do that though. I could see that being abused but they shouldn't have made the Seeker of the Sun's have those naming mechanics.

I wanted to name my Galka in XI a Hume given name but I couldn't because of the one name nonsense. Desperatesword is just not as cool as Desperate Sword.

I like last names.

Or optional. I'm cool with that as well. I don't call everyone by there last name in RL so either way is fine, but don't remove it. Make it an option.

Practical reasons for turning them off - off the top of my head - would be more space in the chat log. Easier insta-tells to someone you just saw. Easier chatting in general. Less screen clutter. All these add to more "immersion" than a simple 'last name'

i'd love an option to have a surname or not personally

It isn't an issue of not having enough possibilities of names for everyone, We need enough possibilities so we can all have the names we want. I'm against having to put a - in my name. I was upset when i couldn't get the name Heartilly, I had to go with Leonhart instead. I don't think Square will nix the surname. But i could see them letting us turn them off. =)
