Yes, but that linearly increases character save data for each and every new piece of gear in the game. It must be stored, for every single character, the obtained or not obtained status. This data has to exist somewhere. So for every single character in the game, even inactive ones, the save data increases with every new piece of gear. Meaning Square will begin weighing more carefully whether to add new gear or not to because it's 1 new piece x the number of players x data backup space = increased character data usage.
