You didn't understand my post and on rereading I don't think I articulated it well. I am not arguing for a free game or that it should cost less and think the price point is fine. I was more pointing out that if they really want to give feedback they should not purchase the game. I don't think that will happen as I think most people here want to continue playing and will be willing to pay the price for it and will rationalize it some how (maybe not everyone). And if someone buys it, it's basically saying to SE yeah you put it at the right price for me.

If players decide that the expansion isn't worth $40 that's their choice. Some people need to stop making it sound like SE is asking for an unusually high price for an expansion though.

SE wants to make money on their game. Microtransactions in mmos is just how the genre has evolved and gaming in general. This isn't like 10 years ago where you payed 1 sub fee and got everything. Now if you want extras you have to pay more. You are not required to buy the extra stuff if you don't want but its there mainly to make them money which is the goal of any game company.

This price is actually pretty generous for a JP company, it is actually "low" because they have a worldwide playerbase.

Games in JP typically cost a hella more than western counterparts.

Though I wouldn't complain to keeping more money in my pockets...

All the XI expansions were $29.99, or at least, as far back as CoP. Considering that was 10 years ago, it's amazing the price was that low for subsequent expansions.

However, consider that the mini-expansions (like ACP and Abyssea) were $10 *each* at launch. That's $60 for content that you'd be hard-pressed to say makes up one normal-sized expansion.

I think $40 for an expansion of this magnitude is justified, especially considering the time they devote to regular content updates (at no extra cost) and the cost of gaming in general.

This may not apply to everyone but if you have Best Buy GCU its only 32 bucks

$30 was the norm, actually. Because I explicitly remember an expansion going for $20 being met with "well, it's cheaper than a normal expansion!"
Given how full games for contemporary consoles at the time went for $50 back then, an increase to $40 for a full-size expansion with a new set of areas, story, level cap expansion of 10, three new jobs, and a new race seems just fine to me.
I've paid more for less in today's market. This is exactly how it has been and should be.
In 10 years, I won't scoff at an expansion costing $50 if game costs go up.
