Pretty sure the flying mounts will be restricted in use to specific 3.0 areas because they will be the only way to reach said areas.
We'll see in around 5-6 months.

Just my two cents ... I would prefer no flying mounts but it's not a game breaker for me either.
Just remember what happened when we finally got "our own Airship" in FFXI! It could be used for only one thing: Flying from Tavnazian Safehold to Al'taieu in a ten-second cutscene.
That's it.
And if you collected special lumber with a ridiculously low drop rate, you could even name it!
Sweet dreams, "Pretty Pretty Prince Cid"...
I love flying mounts, but the way I see it, bit be nice if they had limitations, as in, you can't just fly forever, so you need to land and recharge, or something like that.
I don't know how this flying mechanic is gonna be, just sharing what I'd like it to be.
In any case it makes sense animals get tired of carrying someone in the air, and machines need energy to fly so they need to recharge.
How does a chocobo and an airship even compare? I don't see a chocobo being as fast.
The problem with Blizzards flying mounts is that there is literally no content built around having them. They are just, plain and simple, something to get from point A to point B a little faster.
I look forward to the airship business. I'm hoping that SE learns from Blizzards mistake and builds content that involves flying as a mechanic rather than just a bland mode of transportation.
I quite like how Mists of Pandaria handled the whole flying thing. If I recall correctly, you could not fly there until you had basically got to the highest level, meaning that you had to actually explore the land/content before you get the ability to fly.
Given how FFXIV progression is wrapped around the main campaign, it could be feasible that you do not actually get the skill to fly until we beat the expansion story or get to level 60. Anyway, I actually think that flying mounts could increase the exploration nature of the game, what with the floating mountains and areas only assessable to flying.
