Data Centers/World Locations Info from the LIVE Letter

SE needs to just do this

3 NA servers
3 Eu servers
3 JP servers
3 Global Servers

Adjust the server numbers as needed obviously.

Honestly that is all it will take to make most people happy. Those who want to play in their region can, those who want a global community can go to an official world server. There are easily enough people who would want a global community to make it work. The ability to play 24hrs a day without content finder is more then worth the slight increase in lag.

People seem to not understand is that the games current lag has nothing to do with 2.0, reguardless if your on a JP/NA/EU server in 2.0. We are playing on a FPS games servers, they are 100% crap, all they have to do is put a little bit on client side combined with the new servers, and problem solved. FF11 had virtually no lag, the only time you would notice is for HNM's which wont exist in 2.0, there wont be claiming wars. There is no need for regional servers, but considering they already have the servers they need to atleast have global servers as an option.

You mean you can't have low lag without an actual half-way decent server architecture.

EVE Online has players all over the world, US, UK, EU, Russia, Australia, Japan etc, with the server cluster in UK, yet I've never heard anyone complain about lag caused by geographic distance from the server in over 7 years of playing.

EVE is also a very different kind of game. It's much, much slower and you don't (can't) actively control your ship (WASD). The fact that CCP was able to dilate time in high-pop/heavy-combat sectors without breaking the game or causing its playerbase to cry Bloody Mary is proof enough.

Apples and oranges. One is an action MMO, the other is Spreadsheets in Space. :p

the 3 global servers will be empty except for a few die-hard multiculturalists, and then they will complain how there's nobody to play with and quit the game because of it.

The fact is, all servers are 'global." However, to label some of them and not others as such is a misnomer and just plain wrong, since the "global" servers would be in a particular region still- because you can't make a "server" that' people will connect equally well to all over the world.

Even if we do have an automatic transfer to the new servers, what if Sargatanas only has a Japanese data center? That would mean, in the long run, the EN friends that leave the game will be replaced by JP who want minimal lag. The EN friend pool will be really shallow, and like I've been saying I don't think I can get anything done with the faulty auto-translate dictionary.

Obviously it's a very different type of MMO, but latency does not discriminate based on game genre. And your implication that latency doesn't matter in EVE is patently false. Try to fight someone on a laggy connection, and tell me how well that turns out for you :P The whole "spreadsheets in space" thing is an overused and false myth anyway, combat in EVE (especially small gang when matched with a good opponent) is just as demanding and requires fast response as any fight in any MMO.

Also, Time Dilation in EVE is designed to combat lag resulting from server stress, it does not affect geographical based latency at all, which is what these regional data center is supposed to address.
