Yes, they are a potential audience that SE wants to win back with the release of ARR.
Apart from that, it is a testing phase. They aren't looking for "who is worthy??" Type stuff because it is just to test out new features of the game and performance. It is not the full product.
Didn't get invite. I'm not surprised...
On the positive side, the Alpha will probably be pretty boring. The open beta will likely have more bugs fixed so it'll be more fun then the initial 'wow this is new' factor.
The thing is however that alpha isn't where you want to show off the game. The main point of alpha is to stress test the game and find and game breaking bugs/mechanics. Anyone who was or was not an active FFXIV player can help achieve this for them.
I am just led to believe that people were picked entirely by random (active or not) and I don't believe a priority system exists for the Alpha.
IF...
1. You really wanted to be an alpha tester.
AND
2. You weren't chosen.
AND
3. You feel okay with this because "you know it will be bug-ridden", "testers are not there to enjoy the game".
You should know that complacency is typically an irrational response in these situations, because you're writhing in cognitive dissonance. It's just making excuses and rationalizing.
Because I'm aware of the psychology behind this typical behaviour, I know that it's okay to be upset.
[This has nothing to do with the fact that SE decides who gets in, according to whatever criteria (or lack therof) they determine, regardless of who we are or what we think. This is actually a valid argument]
Picking those that quit a long time ago might not be the absolute best option. They are highly likely to be the ones that believe FFXIV will fail no matter what they do, and wont offer any real feedback and pretty much just waste the slot.... They probably wont even accept the invite.
Atleast we still have PSO2.
But honestly, it's SE. What did you expect?
hmmm???????Quote:
Application Requirements
- Must currently have an active FINAL FANTASY XIV account
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be willing to participate actively and submit bug reports in at least one of the following languages: Japanese, English, French, German
- Must have a PC that meets the minimum system requirements of the game
You may call complacency an irrational response, I call it being grown up enough to understand that the world doesn't revolve around my wants. :p
You speak of psychology but please analyze your behavior. You're practically throwing your toys out of the pram because you didn't get chosen. Get over it, there's other phases of the test D:
What exactly did they drop the ball on...Quote:
They dropped the ball.
I personally tried to get into the alpha while my account was not active, I was unable to apply to it until I paid my months subscription. Who cares anyways It's just an alpha, you joined the forums like 3 months ago and you are QQin hard in this thread. You ain't been picked, deal with it.
I advise all of you to read through the alpha registration page again.
Read every word.
Every single word.

yeah Im sure the one who got invited currently have an active FINAL FANTASY XIV account and willing to participate actively :)
why send invites to inactive account? why send to players who no longer play FFXIV? they'll never log back in anyway. its a waste of an invitation i say.
I think what some people are missing here is that "active FINAL FANTASY XIV account" is referring to an "active FINAL FANTASY XIV service account" listed under "Select Service -> FINAL FANTASY XIV" on your Square-Enix Account Management page, which hasn't been explicitly canceled.
You don't need to have any paid options (ability to log into a character in FFXIV), to keep your FINAL FANTASY XIV service account active. Keeping an active FFXIV service account without any active characters has always been free. As long as someone had an active FINAL FANTASY XIV service account they could apply for Alpha.
This is a result of Square-Enix designing the billing system for FFXIV 1.0 to be user-friendly. You could let a month lapse, have all your character options canceled, and during a future month only need to re-activate you character option(s), without the hassle of needing to re-activate your entire FINAL FANTASY XIV service account.
I predicted this outcome back in September, so I'm personally not surprised.
Pretty much this. Unless you were in so much rage over the games launch that you called and had your whole FFXIV account deleted, you would always be able to log in to the account management page even if you were'nt paying for any character options. Maybe thats not exactly how they view and active account, but it sounds feesable.
And, maybe they just didn't send out all the e-mails yet.
There's two stages to be able to play FFXIV - When you register your FFXIV code, that makes your account active (able to buy service options etc)
But you are not allowed to play XIV until you buy an option.
Technically, everyone who has registered XIV to their service account has an active FFXIV account (since if they had an option/content ID/whatever) they'd be able to log in.
And having an active account = being able to apply for alpha
I hope this makes more sense to you, it's 7am and I've had no sleep ; ;
My husband applied without any active characters :x
I guess the point of this thread is done then. They wont divulge, and we aren't any wiser of who's in. Its not something to apologize over anyway.
i guess it didnt matter if your acct active or not. as long as SE have your email address they'll send you the invite just to get you to come back to FFXIV again.
It seems as though lots of people didn't get invites.
I wasn't aware there were even lots of people here in the first place.
Why does anyone even know who has access to the Alpha? Way to break your NDA.
