They could just throw in the obligatory Kam'lanaut/Eald'narche fight in Ru'lude, though it'd feel kind of weird having such major characters be just... kinda there.

Cautiously optimistic. It's nice seeing Lower Jeuno in HD, they stuck to the orginal pretty closely.

Prishe narrows things down on what to expect since we were only shown a picture of Shadow Lord before. We had no idea which version of the shadowlord they planned on using (past shadowlord with armor, present weakened shadowlord, dynamis lord, etc...) Since we have seen Prishe, Lower Jeuno, and we know that Shadow Lord is involved to some extent I can see a couple of different setups they plan on going: They are setting up either sky or sea.

If they go the Rise of the Zilart route I fully expect to see Aldo and his sister Verena being the main focus of the story. Shadowlord may end up being the main boss of the first raid to progress the story since he was a pawn for Kam'lanaut and Eald'narche early in FFXI. Verena will then become the focus after that since she has the ability to channel the same power as the Shadowlord using the head of his fallen body. This will lead into fighting Kam'lanaut for the 2nd raid and him being betrayed by his brother in Delkfutt's Tower. Eald'narche will use Verena to open the gates to sky for the final raid where he will be the boss. I would expect the crystal warriors to show up in the final raid at some point.

Prishe makes me feel like they are going with Chains of Promathia but idk what they would go with for a 3 raid series. CoP has a LOT of things going on between Bahamut and his dragons, the emptiness, Zilart + tonberry lore, Whisper of the souls and opening the gates to paradise (sea), and Promathia himself to name a few lol. I'd love to go into the promyvion for a raid. Meet Diabolos and go to Dynamis to fight Dynamis Lord for another raid. Then end with a Promathia battle for the final raid. That feels like a ton of setup that doesn't really flow for only 3 raids though lol.

Seems reasonable to me. I could see CoP and Promathia being the big bad in the 3rd raid. If it's only going to focus on Rise and Chains, there is a lot of possible bosses to pull from.

If they're going for any angle, it's probably gonna be some sorta hamfisted Dynamis scenario, since Prishe and the Shadowlord are linked together tangentially through Dynamis.

They're also referring to the areas as walks, which calls to mind Walk of Echoes.

It's probably just going to some sort of memory lane type thing where we're pressing towards someone's soul or mind locked behind a bevy of memorable baddies.

It likely won't make a lotta sense in relation to how FFXI's stories actually played out. Those stories are far too long and deep for a 24 man to tackle any of them with any cognizance.

I sorta expect to move through areas and then the entire landscape/area to change after each boss.

Maybe it's due to my faith in SE being at an all time low, but I have a feeling everyone is reading way too much into things and they will just use a bunch of characters that xi vets will know and things that look cool for those who have never played xi and call it a day. This entire game is built around fan service and they never stick too close to what they are referencing. And I just don't think therre are enough XI vets or devs left in the company or frankly any writers compentent enough to do the amazing stories from Vana'diel any justice whatsoever.

The most fun fact about Shadowlord is that in his transition cutscene to phase 2, on the PS2 which the game was originally coded and engine built for, he has dark purple flames coat him in that black. It's an effect they could never get the PC port to faithfully recreate, so no player that played on PC only their whole life has ever seen it in game.

I'm so happy they chose Prishe, she's such an amazing character and one of my favourites from XI. I imagine this will be a version that comes from Eorzea and not a universal traveller like Shantotto was in the crossover. If they make her someone from a shard that'll be interesting too I suppose. Exciting either way, this is as close to FFXI HD as I'll get in my lifetime. lol

Seriously hoping to see Luzaf make an appearance. How much do I have to bribe the devs to make this happen! LOL

From my understanding, when Matsui stepped down, some of the staff moved over to 14 and the 14 team assists the 11 team time to time.
Yoshida is overseeing both teams as well. But I think you're right, there is a lot of senior developers left from the 11 team that knows that backend, playonline or the ps2 devkits which I believe they are still reliant on.

Surprised they didn't pick Iroha, but I guess lorewise would be difficult seeing how RoV storyline concluded in 11.

Iroha technically exists in FFXIV already, and not some FFXIV version of her but the actual FFXI version since she was transported there in a FFXI crossover event a few years back. But I'm assuming they want someone "fresh" to bring to the alliance raid that hasn't popped up yet, and Prishe is definitely one of the all time popular characters. Would be cool if Iroha popped up to start off the raid questline though, maybe tell us what she's been doing in Eorzea all this time.

Yes and she returned to 11, parts of the RoV missions covers that she was "away" for some time to improve her combat skills. But things happened at the end of RoV making it difficult to re-introduce her in 14 I think. That's what I was talking about.

I'm being vague for spoiler reasons, if we have some people reading this that are playing 11 in preparation for the 14 raid - we've seen a increase of 14 players in 11 last 6 months.

My guess for Prishe is twofold, it's going to include some storybits from CoP expansion, where she's very prominent and second, from the FF Dissidia game/s.

Been playing XI on and off since launch. Same with XIV. Judging by how Dawntrail was made, I expect to be completely let down for this raid series. It'll be another hallway simulator in semi cool XI inspired zones you can't really explore or appreciate any of the work put into it.

I meant lore-wise. How many devs are left that worked on the game outside of the technical aspects doesn't really matter as much. What does is how many have played the game and know it well enough that they know the lore beyond the cliffs notes version. This isn't just a single player ff game, this is a massive mmo that has enough lore that it dwarfs FFXIV's by comparison. It is also a very very different mode of story telling. And between the lack of intimate knowledge of the lore that many of us actual players have of the world, and the fact that the writing has been very very hit or miss, it doesn't give me much hope that we will get anything outside of "hey everyone do you remember this npc? And hey look at how cool this is! Now let's all have tacos, hold hands and sing Kumbaya!". Which is not going to do SE any favors right now.

I was thinking Lion (Since she is in a coma like "dream state" ) or Lillisette (Brought into our world thru a Carnivorous Maw) but Prishe is nice. I just hope it wont be ruined by Wuk Lamat coming in and making it all "uwu tacos! peace love and rainbows!"

I am very excited to see Prishe in the art there. It really annoyed me that they kept using a minor basic-model NPC like Shantotto as the game's representative in Dissidia and other crossovers when main story characters like the "mission girls" would be much more fitting. And of those Prishe is by far my favorite.

Shantotto has always been extremely popular as a character in Japan though which is why they went with her as FFXI's representative in the original Dissidia on the PSP and even into recent times with Dissidia NT (as are tarutaru characters in general). Prishe was added later in the sequel though, although I found her rather difficult to play as so I prefered the insane Windurstian BLM, rather than the immortal Tavnazian elvaan MNK-with-a-mouth.

And I still laugh everytime I remember Shantotto taunting Zidane about him being (a) "male mithra! Or perhaps not!" ;)

I really hope we get all the maidens of XI playing a part.

I'm really glad it wasn't Iroha. She's a fine character and all but I would have preferred XI's legacy to continue on through one of its more long standing characters. (Even if Rhapsodies is from 2015 lol) Prishe is a great choice for this and I can't think of anyone that's played Chains that has disliked her.

I preferred Ulmia. I kind of hated Prishe. Annoying little perma 12 year old brat. (I know she's like.... 40? But she's certainly never aged like it.)

I wonder if each tier will be a set of the expansions... sounds like this first one might be a combo of Zilart and CoP? If the next one is Aht Urhgan that could be rather awesome if it somehow involves Luzaf and the whole Odin/Alexander conflict... I admit I also just want to see Luzaf in higher resolution, lol...

I think the story setting for first tier is somewhere between Vana'diel calender 855 C.E (post 855 C.E) to the Crystal War (862 C.E. around until 864 C.E): The Siege of Jeuno
The Archduke of Jeuno joined the war and the Shadow Lord sent Gigas warriors to assault Jeuno before the Alliance could assemble a planned attack.
This further evident by Prishe's existence as Tavnazia is destoryed after the Battle of Tavnazia by Orcish Beastmen
No official of Prishe where about after Tavnazia is destroyed.

I hope he has a mechanic where if too many people hit him too quickly he just spams breath over and over and kills the tank.

It's probably going to be Darter adds doing Cursed Sphere as circle ground dodge mechanics, though.

I wish. FF11 mobs only did that because everytime you hit them you fed them TP which they used for weapon skill or abilities.

Can you imagine some melee trying to get their positional on Nidhogg and triggering a Spike Flail and wiping the room? Magical.

Maybe they'll do like the Proto-Ultima fight in Dun Scaith and sometimes it'll be Fafnir and other times it'll be Nidhogg.

Seems like it maybe confirms an Omega-style "greatest hits" sort of setting, unless we have Shihu-Danhu as a companion character and he's just randomly teleporting us places. :p

XIV getting more new XI content than XI is actually pretty insane....for all the wrong damn reasons mind you.........

They should be using bosses from the MSQ not some random HNM as a boss. This raid starting to look disappointing and it was what I was looking forward to the most this expac too. SE been getting real lazy with this game lately and the future not looking bright.

As someone who is slowly becoming more and more interested in FFXI (probably 20 years late at this point), and as someone who tried to play it but hated the sign up/login process, I am seeing a lot of things that are going way over my head. I'm probably going to come back here and start asking people who have played through the FFXI story stuff about the raid. Like, what part did Jeuno play in the FFXI story. Or how much of the Ivalice story in FFXIV will be tailored to fit the FFXIV universe. I'm more excited about this raid than I am about the upcoming MSQ, and that's not normal for me.
