In terms of not using your main on the forum, at least in this thread, it comes from them using data from a survey where the results are skewed because the data gathered is not public by default, trying to push a narrative, while using a system that let's you hide who you are, effectively proving how bad the data is.

Outside of balance issues and wanting to filter discussion to those who are familiar with understanding the dynamic of savage+ play and how jobs function at that level, I think that digging through someone’s information to try to one up them is essentially useless and pointless.

Sometimes I will check out someone’s lodestone to get a frame of reference of what content they do participate in and compare it to what they are arguing (can be anything not balance) and at worse sometimes it’s just an eye roll and nothing more.

I think not everyone posting on alts is a troll - and given the drama and behavior here I can see not wanting to risk your main account.

But a certain number of alt accounts are clearly trolls, and there have been enough obvious trolls with accounts made within the past month who then act insane, resulting in people being skeptical of new posters.

It will never not be funny to me how modern gamers are so mindbroken that they think achievements are content, and then try invoke them as a purity test when someone criticizes the quality or replayability of a feature.

Sums up Reddit and these forums in a nutshell. But sometimes it has a place and purpose. Especially along the lines of "I do not engage with this content whatsoever and absolutely refuse to because X reasons", so it does still at least count as a form of feedback. Just on here, it often is pinned against people who do enjoy the content so it's met with a hostile, "Maybe you should go get your feet wet before you complain about it".

Sometimes over in the PvP section of the forums, you'll see people talk about their frustration on CC, ranked PvP, and FOMO rewards speak about their opinions and often get shut down by someone saying something along the lines of like, "Bro you ain't even in top 100! Depends on your definition and interpretation. I think the weight and difficulty of the amount of provided achievements is largely at play here. For example, a normal Console/Steam game that has achievements for Xbox/Playstation/Steam I would probably consider to be a subfield of content to a certain extent. Now for FFXIV? I would flip this and not really consider it content because of the sheer volume of achievements the game has and the ridiculous amount of them that require 10000 X of something. Personally, I tend to ignore titles as a form of content, but the ones that offer a mount, minion, or glamour I'd be more open to calling those achievements content. [See people wanting Shadowkeeper as a Blue Mage reward behind achievements as an example]

I think feedback that you don't do certain content is totally legit. My issue here is when people Noob-splain over those who do engage with the content based solely on conjecture and things they heard second-hand.

I agree with this. The conversation is tricky though because sometimes people Vet-splain at the same time. "It's not that hard, just do it" (Aka: Skill Issue), and refuse to understand a new players pov. It's a back and forth battle for sure.

Yeah I’m def guilty of vet-splaining sometimes.

But sometimes there are some outlandish claims like “people like SMN because they finally get an easy dps job for once” …like all jobs are designed with an approachable entry level playstyle by design. Except black mage, which has a comparatively higher skill floor.

But you’re right it’s a constant back and forth battle especially with people who frequent the forums a lot and also a lot of people who don’t. I think everyone gets frustrated having to reiterate their points for the 69th time because someone new jumped in.

I agree. Some activities involve countless hours of boring grind but a single ding and a platinum achievement showing up somehow makes it retroactively worth it? Same can be said for people who do [dungeon] 10 times because it's 30 seconds faster. Like, nah. You either design it so it's fun to do or you don't put it in the game.

And XIV should take a very hard look at DR and dungeons among many other things in that regard. I'm sorry, but if you think running the same dungeon again and again while pressing AoE #1 and #2 is fun then you have no taste. It's the RPG equivalent of white noise. It's okay to have it I guess, but it shouldn't be the primary source of "entertainment".

Its good indicator of the population since it goes by completed MSQ achievements. What it can't do is different between actual active accounts vs active accounts with multiple alts. the ere is a huge difference in number of active characters vs active paid accounts but SE doesn't release those numbers publicly it why they always go by active players aka characters but luckybancho gives us a good idea thats all.

It's a pretty good indicator. There is no reason to think suddenly, 50k people put their achievement in private. There is also no reason to think there was proportionally far more players in private in ShB than now. But yeah you shouldn't take the numbers as they are. maybe the fall is only 25 or 28% and not 33. But it indicate a fall in player engagment.

At least this metric has the advantage of taking infos indifferently from steam, not steam and playstation. Its default is too not differentiate alts from main accounts, but in absence of official data, that's probably one of the best metric that was presented on this forum lately.

The housing thing is a definite clear omen yeah. On Ragnarok open plots were a rarity, and when they popped up they would be highly contested. Now in my ward alone there's 4 open slots and the biggest surprise for me was that last I checked, those plots had no bids whatsoever.

Again, it's not cold hard numbers for sure. But when all these little things are all pointing to the same problem, you've got to start wondering.

It's probably the closest to accurate source players have for census information. People trying to support their opinions will use just about anything others will accept as reasonable.

The problem with the achievement graph is we don't know what date the information was collected for certain. We know he collected data on May 20th for his normal census - was the same data used for 2nd quarter on this graph or did he take another sample at the end of the quarter? If the first, the graph doesn't show any real problems because there would be no 6.4 MSQ achievement information to be included. If the latter, than what the graph shows really would be concerning.

There's also concern about the inherent bias in the achievement data since most players have their character achievements hidden. It's generally only players with a specific reason to make their character achievements public that do say, and those usually fall into achievement hunter or raider categories. That's some fairly specific player activity in a player base that's much more diverse with many that care about neither of those things.

I don't agree with that. Most people don't care about the achievement, why would they go hide them, they're visible by default. I'm sure the vast majority of player don't even know it's possible.

There definitely a decline in FFXIV, but will it matter? Not likely... we'll still see the usual surge returnees come patch day and expansion launch. At the moment there really isnt any competition in the MMO world, sure there is WoW but its already the massive hate that far surpasses what FFXIV is getting as of late, it'll take a massive change from a current MMO or a huge release of a new one to start nailing down FFXIVs coffin...

I have a question about your 2023 numbers? aren't they 2022. I don't get how we could already have the 2023 numbers while still being in 2023. Or are they the fiscal year that ended in 2023, so from april 2022 to march 2023. In any case make those number pass for the second year of endwalker is kinda sketchy. Until 6.2, most of the players still believed it was just a down time after the finale. 6.2 is the introduction of relics and people still believed relics would be something more than tomes weapons. There is no sale numbers for the period that would have a fall, the moment of break being the 6.3, and it only started very slow.

Once that is said, it would make sense that the number we have are still very high. It even makes sense with the stats presented here. Q2 to Q3 2022 were periods with more players than 2021 (once again, which 2021? the year? the fiscal year that ended in 2021? The fiscal year that ended in 2022) if it's the 2 first the luckybancho numbers make sense, if it's the last option, it's more questionnable. And there is the last

Then there is the other hints I meantionned earlier. The opinion that something is wrong that grew far past the forums, the whole steam numbers fall, that, if they don't have to be taken as a reflection of the whole player base is still a hint, and the fact over the past few weeks, the availability of houses exploded when it was so big in the past.

No, if there is a fall in the playerbase, it's for the last few month. And we have Zero SE official numbers for that period (the last 6 month).

Also, I found there are numbers for april 1 to june 30th 2023. 22% drop for the mmo division. https://www.mmorpg.com/news/square-e...les-2000128641. Really, I'm curious to see july to september, because that's what will tell if it's a real fall or a "return to pre-covid" scenario (which to me is kinda dumb to assume for a mmo, the price of the game being ridiculous compared to the other cost and covid full lockdown have ended nearly 2 years ago - went back partial time to the office in september 2021). Also the people complaining and the one who joined during covid are 2 different crowd, so we'll see.

No one is questioning the financial growth as far as I know. What they're questioning is current player retention.

Not all companies use the calendar year as their fiscal year also.

In SE's case, their fiscal year runs July to June.

Which means that your 2021 numbers are april 2020 to march 2021 and the 2023 april 2022 to march 2023. So your numbers and the LuckyBancho seem compatible.

Ok I'm wrong, it's private by default. Thus except being another hint in the direction there is some kind of fall, it's really hard to tell anything with that.

I was wrong about that too. Seemed strange they have the default at hiding something like achievements.

This data seems inconclusive to me until 6.5/6.55 is released. Its a very common trend to lose subs after .1 in most expansions. I have several friends that will unsub until then since they solely care for the story and playing with friends and usually do a 'catch-up' week or two until the new expansion comes out. Combine this with the growing sentiment that the game is boring and you can see more people unsubbing.

Thats what I was thinking after all the doom and gloom as well. The other expansions sans shadowbringers have a trend where the X.3 patch seems to be the low point afterwards it dips back up.

Probably for the same reason they don't want parsers in the game. Some players use such information in inappropriate ways.

all i see these days when i log in are sprouts/returning players , at this point i am sure se only cares about numbers and not feedback , and even if i want to treat ffxiv as a casual farming/crafting game since i love this type of games i can't because even the (indie games made by one person) releasing on steam/switch have more rewarding farming/crafting system then the one we currently have in ffxiv .

Yeah. Make no mistake, even if the endwalker trend line falls in line with non shb expansions, the argument that veteran players need more content remains.
