True, they are different industries, but they still both run on power. I compared them in the sense of pecking order and that they both need electricity to operate. I'd assume the supply chain would have a higher priority than an MMO service for reasons mentioned above.

Yes, S-E houses the servers outside of the blackout zone. In order to not be an unnecessary burden, there is a chance that they will extend their shutdown.

What's the problem here?

Chiba is not Shibuya. Shibuya has never been part of the rolling blackout plan. That's a confirmed fact.

The fact that there's a chance that they will take a corporate decision to save energy (which is very possible, but not assured considering that other companies already reopened their services), has nothing to do with an article that describes other industries (that consume a whole lot more energy by the way) that are in a completely different situation at the end of a supply chain and in different locations.

Doubt it, Ayerc... SE has been more than courteous so far in their endeavors. As investors become more and more uneasy about the state of the game they will be much more inclined to turn the servers back on. The only thing stopping them right now is their own good will. At one point, they're eventually gonna say screw it, and flip the switch back to the on position.

Key difference between SE and a manufacturing company... Every single thing in a manufacturing plant will have to be checked and rechecked, repaired, greased up, and checked some more before they can begin production. It's no short process, and rolling black outs will affect them. A server farm, on the other hand, just needs reliable power... Which in SE's case, they have had from the get-go.

We probably won't see the servers back up today because im certain they're going to want to check for data corruption and the general well being of their hardware first just to be safe, but we'll probably be back in the game soon. Though, they've probably already been doing this.

And yet, here we are, with no servers on. I'm not trying to say that article has a direct relationship to the server farm. All I'm saying is that from that article, it's at least hinted that there is still a need for power conservation. S-E has shown a huge concern for the well being of the country, so they may continue their shutdown.

This is really getting us no where. We can agree to disagree, or just walk away. Neither of us is wrong, we're all making assumptions here.

... Which we all already knew (and it's been said through this thread several times already). It doesn't change the fact that it all depends on a corporate decision. Either way would be plenty justified, so that article adds nothing.

That's pretty much normal. The SE offices are very big, and AC is one of the worst culprits in energy consumption both in households and businesses anywhere. I'm actually surprised that the server farm takes MORE than what AC does, even if it's actually believable, given that every FFXIV server is not really a single server, but a cluster of several servers.

Sorry but life does go on. Deal with it. The situation in Japan sucks. I have done what I could, donating what I could spare to charities. But the truth here is the only reason the majority of people here are even posting so many topics about the situation in Japan is because the game is down so they have nothing else to do. I realize there are those here who genuinly care about what happened, I count myself amoing them. I just don't feel the need to start Japan Tragedy threads when there are already more than enough around here, nor do I feel the need to post in every single one of them.

No one posts here about those people in Libya being massacred by their government... Oh yeah I forgot, people dying in Libya don't effect the status of the servers for this game. Had this earthquake happened anywhere else on the same scale with the same tragic results, there would be a fraction of the topics here about.

Many of US DID lose friends and that sad truth is there will be players we used to play with or at least see in passing that will never log in again, it's very sad to think about.

I have a few LS mate I know are in Japan, I am worried about them. I have two real life friends in Japan, one I know is ok, the other I have no news of. I lost family in 9/11 and guess what, within a few days I was back to work, because as much as it crushed me my emotions were not going to pay the rent or put food on my plate.

You can mourn and work, you can remember family and friends and work it does not make you less of a person, it does not make you heartless, in fact the work can help you cope and hasten the healing process. Servers were not set to come back online today, all they said was they were going to re-evaluate the situations and update us on it.

I never said they were coming back on today. They mentioned they were looking to evaluate for today. Hence my disappointment that they did not turn them on today.

I didn't expect them to go back on today, but I was expecting them to give us a date when they would be back up, and they did. So I'm not complaining other than to say I think it was a stupid decision to bring them down in the first place.

I guess its bad luck on my part that these servers went down and right when I just bought the game yesterday. I figured I'd have time now that my thesis is down but the earthquake... Guess I don't have much choice now but to go outside and make conversation with real world girls eh?

It's good to hear that service is resuming on the 25th.

As far as power consumption goes, and as Abriael pointed out, Air Conditioning is the biggest energy consumer in most buildings. Air Conditioning and Ventilation (typically handled in the same HVAC system) makes up 37% of the energy use of buildings in the US, the next biggest culprit being lighting at around 18%. (Source: US Dept of Energy)

This is one of the main reasons why we have such a huge push for natural lighting and passive heating and cooling in the Architectural Design industry right now.

That auto translation is a bit dodgy. They need to conserve 11.6% of their power usage to justify turning the servers back on. Saving 8.8% by shutting down their AC and then picking up the other 2.8% in other areas (probably mostly lighting) balanced the equation.

Normally server farms have their own AC setups (since they need a lower average temperature than what's healthy for human beings), which means that they can turn off the AC in the whole compound and keep the server farm one on.

Yes, though that's likely factored into the percentage already. So the server room will have AC and adequate lighting while the rest of the building won't.

And probably why they're only conserving 8.8% by shutting off their AC in non-critical areas, when actually AC usage is typically much higher.

And SE as a big viable business want to bring the servers bk online as late as possible. Viability of Big Business is not set in fast buck but steady and assured stability. They want to plan for all likely outcomes. Take this one for example: If they were to say 25th for sure!! And on the 26th the city suffers a power outage. Consider consistency, consumer satisfaction, and scheduled shutdowns out the window. And their clients would demand retribution--they are already not charging FFXI for the month of April (pretend that there is only 20k members subscribed multiplied by $15)-- they can't just give another free month. They might be better off milking the rest of this month and some of april since they wont be making money for that period, and focus on stability over all [and development issues for XIV].

A thread about jumping is still leading with 22,700 (and posts, with 869, second place only at 565). The sticky at the top of the page is close to that though, with 21,200.
